History

Established in 2014.

Hurricane Jiu Jitsu’s roots took hold in Chicago when head instructor John Lawrence began training under Pedro and Daniel Vianna of Vianna Brothers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Vianna Brothers started out sharing a small space with a capoeira studio, and over the years grew into one of the most respected competitive jiu jitsu academies in Chicago. John started teaching the kids’ classes when he got his blue belt, and helped grow their kids’ program into the competitive force that it is today. As John advanced through the ranks, he began teaching weekly adult classes and occasionally substituting for Pedro, all while traveling and competing as frequently as his schedule allowed. John has had the privilege of competing at the World and Pan American Championships, and has fought countless gi and no-​gi submission matches. Competing led him to win and lose many matches; all valuable experiences in his growth as a teacher and competitor.
