Top This Donut Bar

After seeing the concept I wanted to go right away. As many reviewers have said its like the chipotle of the donut world. You get a base, choose an icing/​glaze and then get 1 topping included. It’s .25 for an extra topping.
We chose glaze with Hershey bar topping. When we got to the register the cool thing I saw was milk on tap! There was even almond milk for those lactose intolerant like me.
Now for the review of actual product, the donut was warm and tasty, smaller than usual donuts. However by the time we took out the donut from the bag, the mini Hershey bars had already fallen off the donut so it was basically just a sticky, glazed donut. It wasn’t that special anymore after that. Perhaps they need to figure out a stronger glaze to make sure toppings stick or have smaller toppings?
I think the concept is awesome but the final product didn’t taste as good as ones that are already made in donut stores. It’s def a place to check out for the novelty though.
The hours open are short so be sure to come before 1pm!

The first time I attempted to come, they were sold out of donuts! (It was my fault, it was around noon on a Sunday.) I tried again the next week and I had an above average cake donut — I love that the donuts are really fresh and it was fun making my donut! I put white icing, peanut butter drizzle, and Oreos on my donut. I also got to sample a donut with chocolate icing and raspberry drizzle. I loved the raspberry drizzle! Although I had fun and created a cute donut, I have a few other donut places that would rank before this one for convenience and overall value… at the end of the day, I think the value just isn’t there for me to necessarily be dying to return again.

After seeing some yummy pictures of donuts from this place on Instagram, I finally visited today! It was empty early on this Sunday morning, which may be due to the holiday break and everyone being out of town. The service was welcoming and quick. I think we did not run into any service glitches because we were the only ones there and only got 3 donuts – chocolate icing with butterfinger crumbs, chocolate icing with Andes mints, and caramel icing with Oreos. They specialize in cake donuts, and the bass was very tasty. They were soft, fluffy, and not at all greasy. It’s neat to pick out icing and toppings like you do at frozen yogurt places, but at the end of the day, they aren’t that different than Holtman’s. I can see how if there more customers and if there was even one indecisive person, this process can be a drag.
We got the donuts to go, so the icing was perfectly set by the time we ate them. The butterfingers were crumbled, but the Andes and Oreos were pretty much whole or in large chunks. I wish they were more like crumbs so that more could stick to the donut. While the chocolate icing was good, I was not a big fan of the caramel. Again, the cake donut base was wonderful and kept the piece tasty.
Donuts here are a little pricey – $ 1.70 per donut. If I’m in the area, I would stop in for a snack. However, I would not go out of my way often for these donuts. My waistline and my bank account would not appreciate it if I did!

This place was awesome! Lots of different options for toppings for your donuts, as well as Rice Krispie treats and cookies (I didn’t know they offered this.) The woman behind the counter was SO nice. My wife and I brought are two daughters and she was so friendly and helpful to my 2 year old that got a donut.
The only bad things were the milk on-​tap was down (not a biggie) and the guy that was there (I would guess a manager) wasn’t very friendly (He didn’t talk much when making our donuts and it kind of seemed like a hassle to him to leave his computer, come over to help us, and then when right back to his computer.)
I would definitely recommend this place and I think it’s such a unique concept.

Love that this place is now open weekend nights. Who wouldn’t rather have a delicious donut over a slider after bar hopping?! Great tasting donuts, although one of our 6 wasn’t cooked throughout. I will call that a fluke as the rest were amazing. I would have loved topping combination suggestions up on the wall or specialty donuts by name that are the most popular as I am not creative with food. Loved it. Glad there wasn’t one of these shops under my dorm room when I was in college or you would have needed a forklift to get me out.

I took a trip with some friends to Top This a few weeks after it opened this summer. They are poised for success on proximity to a college campus. We arrived just a few minutes after open, and they were already busy with pick up orders. My main frustration came with the assembly line process. The workers asked us up front what toppings/​glazes/​etc we wanted. I would prefer a more Chipotle style point as you go approach. There are a lot of toppings, and ordering multiple donuts made it hard to remember when we were inevitably asked to repeat each one as they were being made.
Onto the food: the donuts are small, but fresh, filling, and quite good. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality, having assumed this place was really centered around the toppings (I mean, there is only one kind of donut at the donut shop…). The toppings were the downfall. The glazes melted off the donuts as they were so hot, and the m&m pieces I got just tasted stale. The milk is a cool addition, but I passed due to price. We were also served on Styrofoam which seemed super wasteful.
tl;dr Good enough to merit a stop for the experience, can’t see it becoming a regular thing.

The service here is amazing, Tibby and wheeler are the best they’ve got! Highly recommend to any age group! Fruity pebble and bacon maple are my favs :)

So amazing. Cake donuts, multiple frostings, and toppings. I had a chocolate glaze with sprinkles and peanut butter drizzle. They had candy and other drizzles too! A must visit!

As other reviewers have said, it’s a build your own doughnut bar. You get to choose from different pastry to build upon with drizzles of many different flavors and toppings. Doughnuts were delicious and not dry at all. Will definitely go back to try other toppings!
Oh and parking is metered right out front!

Very cool concept. I heard about this place and just had to check it out… I enjoyed being able to customize my delicious donuts with a large selection of toppings. I ordered two and cut them in half to try each one. Unfortunately by the time I left they were both gone. The experience was fun –the atmosphere is very cool, clean and well organized-​and the staff was great. They told me they will be opening one in Anderson Township where I live — so will be very convenient for me to pick up a donut display and serve them at my next real estate closing. A true celebration!

Came here with the family on Sunday morning. They had a deal where if you like or follow them on Facebook or Twitter you got your 2^nd donut for free. I had a donut with chocolate icing, caramel drizzle, and crushed pecans on top. That is a delicious donut. Someone here complained that the icing is warm and gets messy. You could take your donut home and let the icing cool and harden, but unless you don’t like chocolate when has getting ooey-​gooey chocolate on your fingers ever been a bad thing? Also, as someone who partakes in the Kroger, Dunkin, and Krispy Kreme boxes of donuts that find their way to my workplace I can say that the donut I had is standard donut size. Definitely felt like I got my money’s worth here. Don’t know about the coffee, but it’s a donut bar and Top This Donut Bar does donuts very well. You can always stop by Starbucks on the other side of the building then walk to Top This with your coffee and enjoy a donut. The steps between the two will burn a few more calories and help that donut taste that much better!

This place has been on my list for weeks to try. I LOVE a good donut, the concept of customization was a huge appeal, and the amount of options was exciting. After my visit I just felt very «meh» about the whole thing sadly.

Coffee – watery and undrinkable. My mom spilled some on her white shirt and it was practically clear (good for spill, bad for taste)
Donuts and their glaze were warm meaning it wasn’t solid/​set. Very, very messy. Half the icing came off on fingers.
Donuts seemed smaller than standard donut – especially for price
Only one type of donut base
In the future I would rather go somewhere else where donuts/​icing is cooled enough to eat with more base options. Like the concept and the space but I think it might be more fun to bring kids here than an adult who just wants a quality donut.

Very cool concept! I made a cake donut with Vanilla frosting, with a Raspberry drizzle and topped with Fruity Pebbles and fresh Strawberries. I didnt have high expectations for the quality of the donut but it was fantastic!
It would have been 5 stars, but their work area behind the topping bar was extremely messy and was a bit off-​putting. There were mixing bowls with old dough in it and among a mess of other ingredients and such. Considering this space is visible to the customers, it could have been better kept.

I heard about the restaurant on channel 5 & thought it would be a neat place to take the kids. I was right. The donuts were great. The only issue I had was the kids couldn’t really see the toppings, however, it is on a college campus. So, the customer base would be a little taller. We will definitely go back.

First off, I wasn’t aware of the concept before coming here, and only knew it was a donut shop. We walked in, the only customers at 11 am today and were thoroughly confused by the concept. Small signs to differentiate the glazes & toppings would have been helpful. And maybe pictures or samples of the different product choices as well.
The female worker was very rude & unfriendly. She made me and my partner feel like idiots for not understanding the choices in products offered and failed to explain anything to us, which felt like horrible customer service especially in a brand new establishment. A friendly ‘is this your first time in & let me explain our concept to you’ would have been very helpful, and would have led to a much better experience. We took 4 donuts to go. The donuts are decent– very cake like and nearly impossible to eat without a beverage. The strawberry glaze in particular was very gooey and never solidified so we had to eat it with a fork while it fell apart everywhere. The others didn’t have this issue but overall I wasn’t impressed with the quality considering the other amazing donut shops we have in Cincinnati.
The donuts themselves would have been much better if the customer service would have been on point. However because of this lack of friendliness at Top this, we will be taking our business back to the professionals.

This place is very sleek. Their cake donut is one of the best I have had. The staff is all very friendly and helpful when you first walk in. This is set up like a chipotle for donuts. Start with a plain donut. Pick an icing or glaze, then you have a decent size selection of toppings that range from the basic sprinkles to weird things like potato chips. They have milk on tap. Chocolate, plain (2%), almond (which is sweetened vanilla), and strawberry. On my second visit I was served spoiled milk, which I drank some of. They made it right though and took care of their customer. They also figured out why this happened and resolved the situation. Overall great place can’t wait to eat more of their donuts.

I adore this place! A really cool chipotle for donuts experience. We got some delicious toppings like chocolate icing, maple glaze, and bacon and potato chip toppings! then pink with fruitti pebbles. There were tons and it was so much fun for the kids.

I’m going to give 5 here just for the unique experience but they do need to speed their service up. Only 4 people working on a Sunday morning with a line out the door. Assembly line needs some adjustments. That being said, donuts are crazy and just the right size.

What a cool concept. Build your own donuts as you walk through by selecting your pastry (donut, cinnamon roll, cookie, or rice crispie bar; they even have a gluten free cookie option), icing, drizzle, and topping. I designed a donut with chocolate icing and peanut butter drizzle as well as a donut with glaze and graham cracker topping.
Quality wise the cake donuts are good. Really liked all the toppings we got, too, especially the strawberry icing with rainbow sprinkles and fruity pebbles. I have to admit, Top This lived up to my expectations and maybe even surpassed them.
My favorite part? Four kinds of milk on tap: white, chocolate, strawberry, and almond.
Really liked this place. Ample parking outside, service was great, food was solid, milk was cold, and we got four topped donuts, milk, and coffee for less than $ 11. I have a feeling this will become a regular spot.
