I tried the brand new Chicago Park District field house and fitness center on Howard during the free January trial weeks. The building itself is sparkly on the outside and smelly on the inside. It looks very clean, but there was a sewer-like stench in the lobby and locker room areas. The staff was friendly and actively cleaning the inside and outside when I arrived and left. The new fitness room is acceptable for the $ 42 quarterly fee. There are two exercise bikes, two elliptical machines and two treadmills. All of the cardio is by Star Trac. There are also 7 nautilus-type weight machines and a bench and rack of free weights; these are by FreeMotion. The elipticals and treadmills were all taken when I arrived at 5PM on a Monday and remained filled(I did my 20 minutes) throughout my visit. The strength machines were a lot less busy. There was a radio playing and a stack of fitness-centered magazines available to distract people as they went through their exertions. There are locker rooms, with lots of lockers(no one but me seemed to use them, just leaving their coats and bags in the fitness room), showers, toilets, sinks and benches. They are functional and clean, if not especially inviting due to the exposed concrete. The community meeting room looked nice, but was dark.
