History

Established in 1998.

After 17 years in the beauty industry, Julio Mendez, Chicago’s 1^st Male Esthetician decided to open his first brick & mortar shop. Here he shares his experiences which cover the world of cosmetics, salons, spas and even working with a celebrity clientele. He has climbed the beauty industry’s corporate ladder and is recognized as an expert in all aspects of hair and skin care for men and women.

Being the first male esthetician he found a void in the industry. There were not many male focused spa’s or salons. The ones that claimed to be male focused were owned by people who had zero expertise in the salon or spa industry and additionally frowned on servicing a female client. Julio wanted to create a space that catered to men but was welcoming to all. No attitudes or judgement upon entering Wax Man Spa make guests feel instantly relaxed. We focus attention and detail solely on our guests.

In November 2013 Wax Man Spa opened its doors most recently recognized in Men’s Journal magazine!

Business Owner

Julio began his love of beauty at an early age. His father was a hairdresser and his mother a beauty maven. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s in the Windy City definitely influenced his passion for hair, makeup, and fashion. Julio knew he loved the world of cosmetics in his teens when he visited stores like Bloomingdale’s on the Mag Mile or Marshall Field’s on State Street. There he awed at the beautiful people applying makeup under lit umbrellas and behind shiny counters filled with bottles & compacts promising glamour and success! The world of beauty continued to call him so he enrolled at Pivot Point International for Aesthetics. He graduated early & top in his class, becoming Chicago’s 1^st Male Esthetician! Julio diligently rose over 10 years from freelance artist to a Director of Artistry & Education with LVMH. Searching to further his career he became a Cosmetologist. In November 2013 he opened Wax Man Spa and Salon. He is the go-​to expert & is recognized in many publications.
