Description

Specialties

We’re a long-time traditional Chicago neighborhood tavern, essentially a social gathering place for neighborhood locals, distant friends and those who simply happen to be passing through. We specialize in reasonably-priced drinks particularly local products such as Goose Island along with old standbys such as Hamms, Schlitz & Pabst.

History

Established in 1878.

Located in a store front 2 flat which originally housed a saloon/grocery store in the late 1870s, having subsequent incarnations as a bicycle repair shop and a series of proprietor-run taverns, this site became the home of the Chipp Inn in 1922. Operating as a Polish neighborhood speakeasy disguised as a confectiionary throughout Prohibition, the family business also included midwife services provided from the top floor flat. Today the Chipp Inn remains relatively visually unchanged, retaining its period Brunswick back and front bar, milkglass light fixtures and pressed tin ceiling. The function of this tavern is likewise unchanged, serving as a public gathering place for neighbors and strangers of varying ages, genders and ethnicities to socialize.
