Sticky Rice Chiang Mai

Fantastic food. On point. Service was great. And they do have a pretty extensive menu, with a variety of vegetarian options. Will be back!

Good food, small portions! Went here for some take away and ordered the Northern Sausage which was tasty, spicy and very small portion for the $ 7.50 price. Also ordered som tum papaya salad $ 8.50 also very small portion and avereage as far as som tum goes. Then we had the Kow Soy egg noodles and crispy noodles with chicken in a soup. $ 9.95, disappointed that this came with one tiny chicken leg. Also had a crispy rice with sweet sausage dish.
As I mentioned the food is good but the portions are very small. Maybe it’s different if you eat on site!

I have to agree with some of the critical reviews on Sticky Rice. I’d eat here again, but I am not in a rush. There are two locations and I had no idea until I showed up at the one in the North Center neighborhood, and the staff looked at me like I was crazy when I said my friend had made a reservation. I almost lost it when a different waitress said he had made one and canceled. That was right about the time I got the text from this guy, telling me I was not at the right spot. I almost blew my lid having to drive to the outskirts of Humboldt Park, but by the time I got there, it was worth it.
The seating at this location offers a roomier experience where you feel like you aren’t putting your butt in someone’s face, just to squeeze past them to sit down. I prefer the dim lighting and the darker wood selection for the tables and floors. To liven things up, lots of bright red/​gold Thai inspired decorations have been placed around the window frames, along with gathered deep-​red curtains, no doubt, to block the sun in the daytime.
I ordered the Pad See Ew and it came to my table tasting like it was made in mass quantity, and reheated in the microwave. That’s not to say that I thought that their kitchen was dirty. It means that I also wonder if there are corners cut at this business. Much like the individual who suggested that their pineapples are coming from a can and not sliced fresh. I have mixed feelings, but generally the dish tasted like all pad see ew, and I would have been able to tell what it was had someone asked me to put on a blindfold and try it.
There looks like a lot of dishes to choose from, so if I come back I’ll try something different. Perhaps I’ll scour reviews to try to figure out what their popular dishes are, and try one of those instead. It has been said before, but both locations of Sticky Rice are BYOB and I have always found that to be a convenient feature of any restaurant. Not so much if you aren’t drinking and can smell all the cheap wine in the air around you. I washed everything down with a pre-​packaged Jasmine tea. Sticky Rice does in a pinch, and a great place for a first date that isn’t afraid of Asian food.

Went here with some friends from out of town. BYOB was wonderful! All of our dishes were great and service was prompt and friendly! My vegetarian friends were very happy with all of the options they had!

Every time i call its a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ chance that they will deliver to our location. Not only that, but they will never say if we are in fact outside of their delivery area. They just kind of hem and haw on the phone with me until I hang up.

They tasted excellent and fresh
My only problem was the consistency in size of each roll, half were extremely filling and put together, while the other half were much smaller and falling apart.
I will return to try other items and will dine inside because they are BYOB

I am so delighted with this place. Also it shares a parking lot with a gas station, so if you outdrink your BYOB stash in the middle of eating, you can just run outside real quick and liquor up.
They have a huge menu, and it all sounds delicious. There’s a good mix of familiar foods (panang curry, pad thai, pad see ew), but also a bunch of other stuff you probably haven’t seen before. We shared the pan-​fried sticky rice stuffed with green onions, which was fun to eat and sufficiently prepped my belly for the curry bomb to come.
At the server’s recommendation, I got the massamun curry (with bone-​in chicken), which was REALLY STUPID GOOD. Like, face-​melty kind of good. The sauce was so rich and perfect, and the thin fried roti bread it came with was amazing. Also, they put a smiley face made of vegetables on top of my rice. It was nice to have food that was as happy to see me as I was to see it.
My companion got the duck-​lychee-​pineapple curry, which he loved. And it was gluten-​free. They have an entire gluten-​free menu actually, and the fact that it’s scribbled in pen on the back of a piece of cardboard did not detract from the experience one bit.
Will definitely return. Will maybe have them bring a curry fountain to my next big social event.

We ordered delivery and it came within 30 minutes. Granted, we do live within walking distance so it was probably the easiest delivery ever. but hey, it’s a win for everyone!
The food is pretty good. I will probably try the other location because the food isn’t good enough for me to want to eat there but it’s good enough for when you want some hearty asian food.
Food:
— panang curry — good flavor but a little too soupy/​diluted for me.
— pad see ew — simple and delicious
— larb — good but i like it more when there’s a little more vegetable produce in it rather than just a bunch of ground up meat
— chive dumpling — nah. it was just a bun with some sliver chives. too doughy too!
— rice soup — it wasn’t cooked enough. i’m used to either cantonese style which is super creamy and totally broken down, or vietnamese style which is broken rice in some broth. however, this was just normal rice that was cooked a little longer and placed in broth. i ended up cooking it over the stove with some more water and allowed the rice to break down more and it tasted fine… but what’s the point of cooking food i bought from a restaurant?
Overall, it’s good for when you’re up for something ethnic and you’re too lazy to deal with anything but delivery. Nothing to write home about!

Oddly a very good BYOB Asian place. Looks can be deceiving because it is in a gas station parking lot and when we walked in we one of two tables. Almost walked out but had good reviews. The fried rice, and garlic chicken were very good. New delivery on Sundays

I had high hopes for you Sticky Rice!
$ 6.95 for the lunch special = a lot of room for forgiveness. The food was good but came out lukewarm and cold. The special consisted of a small soup, an eggroll, and a main entrée. I had the green curry and it was pretty good.
What I could not forgive was $ 12.95 for a Crying Tiger that was drenched in sauce. I’ve always known this dish to be a grilled piece of delicious steak. To frustrate me more, they «decorated» the dish with canned pineapple slices… CANNED pineapple!

I’m losing hope in Chicago’s Thai food scene.
Mayor Rahm (or Chuy, we’ll see in April 2015) needs to add something to the agenda: create incentives for better Thai food in Chicago. Having had Sticky Rice twice, I think I have a green-​light to hand out 2 stars.
The Basil Fried Rice was 85% rice, 10% veggies, and 5% meat. The Pad See Ew tasted cheap and the pork was odd. I don’t know exactly how to describe the food here — but it’s like not much thought or effort goes into the preparation of these dishes.

They had me in their system as Jeffica for 3 months and that still didn’t stop me from coming here.
I usually get takeout and enjoy the feast on my couch while Netflix is playing in front of me, but the vibe inside the restaurant is nice. Much nicer setup than most BYOB thai places. I need to eat inside sometime soon.
I always get their Pad See Ewe — amazing every time. I opt in for pickup and they are always quick to prepare it.
Everyone that works here is always nice.

I am so disappointed in the service my roommates and I received tonight! I love Sticky Rice and have been ordering from the north center location for a while before Chiang Mai opened, but tonight was the first time I ordered delivery from Chiang Mai. My roomies and I were planning on ordering food and watching the oscars together. I insisted we get Sticky Rice because of how awesome it was, but I made a huge mistake! I placed the order online at 6:35, and the confirmation said it would be under an hour. When 8 pm rolled around and we hadn’t received our food yet, I called to check up on it. They sounded very confused about the order, and I was worried they didn’t even begin to make it, but they told me the driver was out and it would arrive shortly, and hour 20 tops. Another 20 minutes goes by and still nothing. I call back, same thing, was then told the driver would be there in two minutes? And yeah, no. Just over two hours later our food arrives, and of course it was unappetizing and cold. Not even warm, it was cold. The driver just said «sorry man, they never gave me the order.» The woman who took my order kept blaming the driver, and driver blamed the restaurant. Nice!
The crab rangoon was cold and hard. The Rama Chicken was just some steamed vegetables and chicken with a spoonful of peanut sauce on top. The sticky rice that came with my duck curry with lychee was literally a small baggie of rice. We ended up having to cook some jasmine because the portion was so ridiculous. The Kee Mao was just noodles with a few veggies, and it was dry and boring. There was also no «special free item» included that was advertised for the amount we paid. Also no sauce packets, napkins etc in the bag. Nothing. So we ended up paying $ 55 for some dry, cold and bland food.
Overall the whole experience put us all in a foul mood. I understand bad nights happen, but I will never be ordering delivery from them again. They are located 2.2 miles from my home (which they charged me an extra dollar for delivery) and it took two hours. Unacceptable. I’m giving two stars because I have have had a couple good meals from here, but this location is definitely lacking in service and quality from the original sticky rice. There are fewer authentic dishes, less flavor and every meal is a buck or two more more than the north center location. Look I’ll continue to make the drive out there.

It was a most fortuitous evening, arriving home hungry after a long day at work and finding a menu from Chiang Mai in our mailbox. Our
grocery order was running late, and we had no choice. The take out menu sat on our kitchen table just staring at us.
I ordered online, but decided to pick up so I could check out the restaurant. And it was cute… super super cute. The restaurant is small, with dark walls and a friendly vibe. I was greeted warmly with bright and friendly faces.
The young bleached blonde that rang me up made a point of checking to make sure my food was correct. She grilled me to make sure I knew what I had ordered, and I thought that was pretty cool.
As soon as I got home we ripped into the bags and the smells wafted out. We knew we were in for a treat… and I should note, in general, we’re huge fans of Thai food so we had high expectations. And our expectations were… to say the least, pleased.
First I tried the silky savory Thai Omelette which has a modest $ 3 price tag. It was awfully delicious, with a subtle soy and green onion flavor. It’s something I will order again.
The cucumber salad was classic, not much to say here. Another inexpensive add on, that’s worth it for the texture and flavor.
My Northern Thai Sausage was good, but probably not something I would order again. It was aggressively seasoned, kind of mealy in texture and a bit overcooked. It tasted good, don’t get me wrong, but not a highlight.
Speaking of highlights, the Chicken Satay was succulent and perfectly cooked. It was served with a BANGING peanut sauce. Some of the best I’ve had in recent memory. Also, the Nam Prik Ong with pork, tomato, onion and red chili paste was wonderful.
The entire meal was perfectly spicy. Not too hot, but we liked that everything had some heat. After we finished, we crashed on the couch in a coma. Great stuff and serious bang for the buck as far as quality and flavor is concerned.

Updating. Just fantastic. Everything we hoped it would be and more. Love the simplified menu and it’s always nice to have friendly staff. The food is very good and always consistent. Keep it up Sticky Rice.

We decided to come here to use a $ 25 gift certificate that I had won through my internet provider. If it weren’t for the gift certificate, I’m not sure I would have ever ventured in this area for thai food. I’m so glad we stopped by though!
The food here was really good. We ordered a thai iced coffee. It was nice and sweet just the way I like it! We also ordered crab fried rice, pad see ew, rice egg rolls and papaya salad. All of it was delicious. We are not big eaters but we some how managed to eat almost everything off the plates. Flavors tasted authentic, prices were reasonable, and service was also really great.
We were not able to order the lunch special with the gift certificate, but they had a nice deal for an appetizer, soup, and entrée for $ 6.95. If I’m ever in the area again, I may have to check out that deal!
Street parking was available and was also meter free!

This is one of the best Thai restaurants that I have been to. My cousins and I came here after hearing some good reviews about it. As soon as I walked in, I was pleased with the interior. The floors, tables, and chairs were of dark wood and the the dim light positively casted highlights on certain aspects of the restaurant. The umbrellas hanging from the ceiling as well as the flowers added accent to the sultry feel.
As a family, we decided to just order several dishes so that we could all eat it «family style.» That way, we were able to get a taste of everything. I don’t remember exactly what the names of the dishes were but I do remember how delicious they were. The tom yum soup, the Chinese broccoli with pork, and also the coconut curry. Don’t forget to try the dessert. Any extra calories will not be regretted lol.
The server, Becca, was very generous as well. She was extremely attentive to our table and made sure we were satisfied throughout our entire time there. I definitely recommending this place for new and old comers! Try it out — Amazing!

First of all, when did the city tear down the Bloomingdale trail bridge over Western Ave? What does it mean?
I remember dish washing at the Union League Club back in 2002. I lived on Artesian near the Bizmark, a fast food place. I would walk to the Western blue line and stop at what is now Sticky Rice Chiang Mai for a Dunkin donuts coffee. On the late night train ride home I would listen to Allan Stagg’s Sanctuary and stop at the 24 hour McDonald’s for a double cheeseburger.
Flash forward twelve years: now I’m a restaurant manager and live in West town. McDonald’s has been remodeled, adding a second drive thru lane. The Bizmark is gone. Allan Stagg is dead (RIP… the tradition carries on with Nick michaels’ Deep End). The Bloomingdale Trail is becoming an elevated park and the bridge part over Western has mysteriously vanished. Dunkin donuts is Sticky Rice Chiang Mai.
The bottom line is that good Thai food has arrived, and they deliver. Although not to West Town. The original Sticky Rice up north by Irving Park is a welcoming yellow inside and out: Sticky Rice Chiang Mai is named after a Northern Thai city and it’s interior is paneled in brown wood.
The food we had (grilled squid, egg noodles in yellow curry, mango sticky rice) was delicious: the best Thai in the neighborhood.

Boy and I came last night for dinner. I almost drove past it twice because I couldn’t see the sign and only saw an «open» sign. Hopefully in the coming months, they’ll have a lit sign with the restaurant name!
We ordered the fried shrimp appetizer (tasted better without the peanut sauce and wished there was something else to dip it in), papaya salad (gave me the heat I wanted!), fried red snapper (incredibly difficult to eat because it was so dry/​stringy and fried. I had the leftovers for lunch and worried I would splash the sauce all over me) and talad prik/​seafood combination entrée (pretty light with the seafood. More so a mound of onions and green onions with 4 mussels and a piece of squid that still had bones).
I look forward to trying Sticky Rice again since it’s more CTA friendly than my other Thai place.
