Super cool little record/book shop in Portage Park, adjacent to Perkulator. Glad to see a place like this in the neighborhood, it brings some unique character for sure. Vinyl selection is good, genres are fairly broad but there was plenty of variety. Soul, funk, disco, jazz, country, rock, psych, punk, new wave, punk, electronic, hip hop, etc. Most were used but VG quality or better, a few sealed reissues and new releases, including an extensive back catalogue bin of Trouble In Mind Records. I found a handful of gems at great prices… the average price was $ 3 for the used LPs/12“s I picked up. A couple for $ 5 – 6 and one for $ 10, found at least 5 for $ 3 which was great. The listening station was a nice touch, and the staff from the café were extremely helpful with hooking up the cartridge and balancing the tonearm. Check it out if you’re in the area, it’s a fun place to browse after getting coffee.

Sputnik is the perfect partner to the Perkolator coffee shop next door. The space is well laid-out and very tidy. There’s even a listening table where you can take a quick listen to the vinyl you picked out. And there is lots of vinyl to choose from – all kinds of genres, different eras and even 45’s. The shelves of used books also show a great variety of genres and all the books seemed to be in great condition despite being owned previously. The prices seemed very reasonable too. There is some seating here so you could definitely take your drinks over here as well. Great addition to the block!

So I love this place. It’s attached to my favorite coffee shop-Perkolator– so I can grab my beverage of choice and walk through the doorway into the record/book shop. What fantastic place to hang out. There’s a listening station so you can spin some vinyl, lots of great books that are well organized, and a small amount of cool seating if you want to visit with friends or get some work done. Free wi-fi, cool music and excellent atmosphere. The vinyl and book selections grow every day. I am there A LOT and always see them adding new product. No CD’s or DVD’s! But if that is your scene you can just walk across the street to Thrift and Thrive which is owned by the same family. Did I say, «family owned»? Yes I did! Locally owned and operated which makes me even happier about spending money here. So. If you love vinyl and used books-this is your place. If you love great food and coffee-this is your place! It has it all people!
