Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica

Beautiful and clean Basilica in Chicago and the nicest church I’ve been inside of in Chicago. Probably top 5 or 10 I’ve been to inside the US. It reminded me of a few nice churches I went to in Rome this year and the Father there told me that most of the interior was made in Italy and shipped to NYC, then Chicago in the early 1900s. Then it was assembled into what you see today. There’s also a small side chapel with a replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta (sculpture) which was actually carved in Italy too. The neighborhood is semi shady in some areas but recommended for a visit if possible, for sure.

It was a center of devotion for the Sorrowful Mother Novena beginning in 1937. It now serves as the National Shrine for St. Peregrine, the patron saint for cancer and those suffering other serious illnesses.
I attended the third Saturday 11:00 a.m. St. Peregrine Mass. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the Basilica and the devotion of the people praying for spiritual and physical healing.
Come for the magnificent beauty return for the deep faith, devotion of the Servite priests and the congregation!
I’ll be there every third Saturday (English Mass). Spanish Masses are 11:00 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month.

Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica is one of the most beautiful historical church you will ever visit. Absolute breath taking. Built in 1890 by architect Henry Engelbert. It also is a very peaceful spiritual space. I had to just sit and take it all in.

Like another reviewer, my wife & I visited during the Open House Chicago. What a beautiful church; one of the most spectacular in North America. The neighborhood is sketchy, but street parking and the parking lot appeared very safe.
As a catholic, we are planning to attend Easter mass here.

I came here for the Open House Chicago Event. Walking in was one of the moments where you gasp out loud because the inside is breathtaking. I found out that only a pope can designate something as a Basilica because of architectural beauty.

I recently attended a baptism here. Fr. Vidal is my best friend’s in-​law.
This church is magnificent in every respect of the word.
Its HUGE.
Its BEAUTIFUL.
Its HISTORY is full of wonderful stories.
My friends mother in law was married here in 1964 when the congregation was predominantly Puerto Rican. Father Vidal, her brother was an alter boy at the wedding. Before those years — the Irish, before that, the Italians. Now, Fr Vidal shared with us, the church hosts a mostly African American congregation and is thriving in the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is shady. Its pretty run down over there, but you cant tell that from inside the church grounds. Its spectacular.
If you’re a catholic church goer, its worth a trip to this paradise on a Sunday.
