Maggio Auto

It was crushing news to read here that Andy has passed away. I only had the need to visit his shop once, but where Midas on Lincoln Ave tried to soak me for $ 4000 for repairs my car didn’t need, Andy fixed every problem he could find for under $ 700. That was to include the rubber fixtures the Midas techs took a knife to. He was incredibly honest and skilled mechanic, albeit quite the unusual character. He’d never met me before, but when I showed up at the shop, we talked for an hour and a half like he’d known me for years. His passing isn’t just a loss to the driving community, but to the world as a whole, because Andy was one hell of a good guy.

This has a NEW owner who moved his business from a smaller location on Western & Addison. His name is Vicente, & although he specializes in Toyotas he has been taking care of my Jeeps for many years. Thank You for the great customer service. I love the new place.

Thank you, Andy. You will be missed.

Words cannot convey the pain knowing Andy has passed away. The resilience and character of this young man was touched by many that had the opportunity of crossing paths with him. Andy was the type of person that you wished you had more of in this cruel world. He was selfless and genuine. You will be greatly missed. I thank God that I had the opportunity of knowing you. Goodbye friend.

For those who don’t yet know, Andy Maggio has left this world to be part of a better one. He will be greatly missed by his many friends, family, and loyal clients. RIP, Dearest Andy. We love you.

Unfortunately I just found out from another Unilocaler that he passed away a few weeks ago.
I never met Andy Maggio, but from what I read he went above and beyond the call of duty, was honest and charged a fair price to fix your car.
That picture of him smiling is priceless, worth a 1,000 words.
RIP Andy, you are sorely missed!

Maggio Auto was honest, fast, and did not give me any hassle, lies, or up-​sell with the several repairs done at my last visit.

I’ve been going to Maggio Auto for years. My 14 year old car is still running. Andy is awesome and will definitely not rip you off.

Andy is awesome. I cannot speak more highly of this place. I’d taken my car to another auto shop for an oil change and the guy there told me my axle seals were leaking oil, I needed coolant, the thermostat and gasket needs to be changed, and that I had to replace the serpentine belt. All for a whopping $ 600.
Panicked, I went to Andy for a second opinon. So glad I did. Not only did he tell me that was total B.S., he actually showed me why there was nothing wrong with my Prius at all. He popped open the hood and pointed out the serpentine belt was in perfect condition and gave me a pretty nice lesson in auto maintenance.
I drove out of the shop more knowledgable about my car and feeling immensely relieved.
From now on, this is where I’m getting my oil changed.

After being quoted $ 700+ for a needed repair by Fletcher Jones, 3 months after they did a «comprehensive» service on my car for $ 1200+ I was fed up. After reading the great reviews here on Unilocal,I decided to check out Maggios. The reviews were absolutely right.
The needed part was so expensive that Andy generously offered not to charge me for labor. I’m done with Fletcher Jones!

By far the best mechanic you could have without having to sell a kidney to pay for your repairs. God blessed with his talent and will continue to bless him. I tell you I 100% recommend him and thank you Unilocalers cause it was this place where I found him. Thank you Andy for your service. People stop getting ripped off and go see Andy.

I could sit here and tell you about the great work Andy did on my car. I could gush about how he worked with me when I was a little underfunded for my repairs. I could provide great detail about how friendly and conscientious Andy is.
Instead I would urge you to just take a look at some of the other reviews. There is nothing I could say that would contradict the other 30 five-​star ratings for Maggio Auto.
Case in point — great work, nice guy, reasonable pricing.
FYI — if you’re used to the sterile environment of most dealerships (i.e. TV, water cooler, vending machine, etc), don’t be surprised at Andy’s shop. It’s the polar opposite of that, but it’s as real a garage as can be.

Andy has wicked high car intelligence. Really good communication.

So I went to Andy for a second opinion on my engine belts and cooling system diagnosis from Thom’s (see other Unilocal). I had my doubts about the diagnosis and Andy basically confirmed that everything was fine and that I should be able to drive cross country with no problems. He took the time to show me the belts in question (no cracks seen) and also hoses (both on top and under the hood). How solid is that?
He also spent the entire day after the blizzard pulling people out of snow banks with his truck. Super solid.
Andy is a GREAT mechanic and NICE guy

A few weeks back, I was having some strange car issues so I decided to check out this place. Andy gave me his opinion on what was wrong, but said he didn’t usually handle that sort of issue and gave me the number for someone who did. Then he went the extra mile and called the other place to tell them what he thought was wrong.
I know that all sounds simple and like what should happen… but anyone who has ever been to a mechanic knows that it’s rarely that simple. There’s always sudden extra problems that arise, extra fees and attitude. Not so here. The next time I have a car issue, I’m coming back.

I wish I knew more about cars, because it would have saved me the agony of going to chain service centers and being ripped off. Maggio came so highly rated that I didn’t even bother calling. I brought my car right over to have those squeaks and grinding sounds checked out.
Talked to Andy and he said he couldn’t look at it until the next morning. So I left the car with him and the next morning he called me and said it was the brakes. My jaw dropped, not because it was expensive, but because it was so much lower than what I had expected. The place I had gone for my previous brake job literally charged twice as much and that was BEFORE Andy knocked a few bucks off of the price. I will definitely come back here for car care. He had it fixed in less than 24 hours.
Unfortunately they don’t do tires so Andy was nice enough to recommend a place to get new tires, for which I am grateful because it saves me the trouble of searching Unilocal for another mechanic.
Believe the hype! This guy is the real deal.

If your car needs some fixin and you’re able to make it to Ravenswood, I’d really recommend this guy.
I’m new to Chicago, had an unexpected car problem, and had no idea where to go. I asked around my office space, and three people all independent of each other recommended Maggio’s.
He was fully transparent with me, gave me an honest worst case scenario, and hoped that it wasn’t that bad. He set the expectation up front of how much it could run, and kept me up to date on the progress. It’s not a huge operation, and not a place you’d want to sit and do business while you wait, but it’s convenient to the Brown line, reasonably priced, and really, really light on the BS.
One of the hardest things about moving to a new area is finding a mechanic you can trust. I found mine.

Andy offered to check our Honda Accord’s computer system for free to make sure our car wasn’t going to blow up during our travels. He was extremely helpful and insightful. This is the last thing we expected as out-​of-​towners seeking car help. We just expected to be taken advantage of, but he provided honest service!
If you’re in the area or from out-​of-​town definitely check him out if you need car service!

Have you ever left your infant child at an unlicensed daycare, run by a middle-​aged lady in a belly shirt, who is drinking suspicious blue liquid from a plastic tumbler at 8 in the morning and thought, «I’m probably going to regret this, but I have no other alternative»? Neither have I, but that’s the feeeeeeeling I get when I drop my car off at most Chicago shops for repairs.
Actually, that’s the feeling I *used to* get. Now I drop my insolent, metal child off at Maggio Auto with Andy and it’s like leaving your problem child with Annie Sullivan. I KNOW ‘Christine’ is going to be okay – more than okay – when I pick her up. That’s a much better feeling than I used to get.
I’ve taken my rolling, black money pit to several other neighborhood mechanics who were at best, unskilled and at worst, outright shysters. Most recently I was ripped off for hundreds of dollars and told that there were nearly $ 1,000 more worth of problems that the car just didn’t have (turned out to be just a $ 26 brake fluid pump, which my neighbor replaced for free). I plan to write a review of these con artists, in the hopes of saving some poor soul from the financial distress that I experienced, but every time I think about what happened to me there, I feel small and need an adult.
Back to Andy.
1. He knows what he is doing. He figures out what’s wrong with my car and fixes it correctly. He’s got mad skills and you want this in a mechanic… unless you are a trust fund baby and like wasting money.
2. He’s honest. He tells me EXACTLY what’s wrong with my car (and even tries to explain it to me in lay[wo]man’s terms) and he NEVER makes stuff up. He just wouldn’t. Here are three *very* important words: I.Trust.Him.
3. He understands that I am not a trust fund baby and goes to the trouble to find good prices on the parts I need.
I’ve lived in Chicago for Thir – for a while now, and have been able to find great bakeries, great salons, great dry cleaners, great restaurants, great bars, but until now, a great mechanic has been a mythical creature. I’m so glad Andy has proven that skilled, honest mechanics do exist in Chicago.
