Elysia Root Cakes

We knew we wanted to have Elysia do our cakes from the moment we had our tasting. Not only are her cakes delicious and beautiful, but she takes the time to help you during the design process without any pressure and with a great personality. We got both the wedding cake and groom’s cake from her at a reasonable price. The salted caramel and cookies and cream fillings are delicious. All of our guests raved about the cakes and we can’t wait to order more special occasion cakes from her in the future. Plus, I always appreciate when an owner takes the time to deliver and set up a cake rather than sending it with employees.

When I was looking for a cake designer for my wedding on September 19^th, I wanted a talented designer who would make my vision a reality and someone who also made delicious cakes. My groom and I tasted another cake designer and even though her designs were impressive, her cakes were very expensive and tasted awful. BUT when we met with Elysia Root we were blown away. Elysia and her assistant Stephanie were very professional and such a pleasure to work with. Elysia is a very sweet, down to earth person, and extremely talented cake designer. Her portfolio is definitely impressive. Her cake and fillings taste delicious! And for someone who loves dessert as much as I do, this was such a plus. Who wants to eat a pretty cake that doesn’t taste very good? Elysia’s cake is by far the best wedding cake I’ve ever had. As far as the design, she listened to what I had in mind and made it a reality. her prices are very fair as well. I am so impressed and happy with the final product. It definitely exceeded our expectations.

I had my wedding at the Langham Hotel and they exclusively use Elysia Root for their wedding cakes. This ended up working perfectly because Elysia is awesome and her cakes are both stunning and tasty. When we showed up for the cake tasting we had no idea what we wanted the cake to look like, but seeing Elysia’s work was inspiring. Her designs are beautiful. And the tasting itself was amazing — probably my favorite part of wedding planning process! We couldn’t have been more pleased with the flavors and with the design concept. We went with a coconut cake and both passionfruit buttercream and strawberry conserve, which seemed to fit an August wedding perfectly. And for the design we asked for a white cake with a delicate gold lace pattern.
Going into the wedding day, I had a good idea of what to expect based on Elysia’s sketch, but the cake really blew me away. It was gorgeous… and tasted amazing. It really exceeded all of our expectations!

Let me start by saying that I am a wedding planner in Chicago, and was determined to assemble the very best team for my own wedding day. My husband and I got married at a venue that did all of their desserts in house, but I specifically had it written into the contract that I could bring in Elysia Root desserts because I felt so strongly that her work was the absolute best. From the moment you walk in for your tasting, you are in awe of the beautiful studio, the sweetness of Elysia herself, and the attention and care to each and every detail from start to finish. Our wedding cake and desserts were absolute show stoppers and are one of the things our guests still cannot stop talking about! When our desserts came out of the kitchen, everyone turned their head including us! I promise you you cannot go wrong with Elysia and her talented team!

We just used these lovely ladies for my son’s birthday, the theme was Where the Wild Things Are. I couldn’t have been more impressed at the way things turned out! The cupcakes and cake were the centerpiece of the entire event and even though I had purchased supplemental decorations — I may as well not have, no one noticed anything but those beautiful baked goodies.
The delivery team was perfectly on time and had great feedback on layout and the display — seeing as how we had a handful of little guys running around we needed to make sure our display was safe from sweet-​tooth sneakers :)
I would encourage you to give them your creative ideas and let them get their artistic juices flowing, you’ll be completely impressed and delighted.

We got married last weekend, and I wanted to surprise my fiancé with a grooms cake. I had a very specific vision in my mind and Elysia came through! The cake was spectacular. My fiancé is a fighter pilot for the Navy and she made the most detailed jet slicing through the top tier! Everyone was in awe of the design, and the taste! Pictures to come!

Elysia made my husband’s 50^th birthday cake and I am shamelessly hawking her product because… it was insanely fab! Many bakeries do extraordinarily beautiful cakes, but the cake inside this fondant oven was indescribable!
But let me try: super moist chocolate cake layer, thin ganache layer, salted caramel ITALIAN BUTTERCREAM layer (not to be confused by the buttercream most of us know… THIS is a different animal!!! Feels almost like whipped cream without the cloying, sickening sweetness), layer of cake, layer of vanilla bean italian buttercream, etc., etc. I’ve had local guests actually ask me 2 days later if there’s any cake left!
Price note: it is a higher price point than say Deerfield Bakery, but she has greater design choices and capabilities and honestly a more gourmet cake offering. Also, if you are familiar with Alliance Bakery on Division (great people btw — beautiful cakes), Elysia Root was just as mind-​blowing aesthetically and the CAKE was SUPERIOR by far at HALF the price. Plus I don’t think Alliance delivers out here.
Elysia Root sent an experienced driver and two pastry chefs in their pastry whites to unpack, position and do minor repairs (for FORTY bucks!). This cake was ordered to feed forty. It could’ve fed 80, and EVERYONE had some and some seconds. I can’t say enough but that’s obvious huh?
As for the Allison 1 star review it looks like ignorance and fear have motivated her review. If she were an informed consumer she would know it is COMPLETELY legal to be a caterer or baker and sell your craft even if, GOD FORBID, you rent your kitchen space.
The woman and her cake and associates I’ve described were so completely wonderful and buttoned-​up professional I honestly wouldn’t give a hoot if she DID make them in her home.
And, speaking as a wife of a man who has been developing a restaurant, and having met many small business owner/​chefs in the rental kitchens I can tell you it is indeed possible to make a wedding cake or food to serve 100 people at a wedding or bat mitzvah in such a space. It depends on the chef’s arrangement with the facility. And for the record these facilities ARE inspected and must be to code quite regularly.
At any rate if this scares you, don’t buy her cakes. I feel sad for you to be missing out though AND you should probably skip any future pot lucks or picnics as well.

Elysia Root and her team made a fabulous birthday cake for my daughter’s 3^rd birthday. I gave her a very basic idea of what we were looking for and she went above an beyond. I was looking for a farm themed cake as my daughter is obsessed with the barn at Lincoln Park zoo. And they made a HUGE 2 layer barn cake with animals all around. It was amazing On top of that it tasted fantastic. We went with chocolate cake and salted caramel buttercream frosting. We got so many compliments and had several guests ask for her info.
She packed to so that it was easy to transport though she had offered to deliver. And we had a fair bit left over which we happily froze and enjoyed it again and again

Elysia did the grooms cake for my wedding and it was amazing. We talked via email a few times and she sent me some sketches of what she was thinking and the next thing I knew it was at my wedding venue and looked PERFECT. It was hands down the easiest and best decision I made for my wedding. Everyone was very impressed with the cake — not only did it look great but it tasted great too. I would not hesitate to work with Elysia again. I think she is very professional and anyone who is holding out because she doesn’t have a store front or formal kitchen doesn’t know what they are missing!

My husband and I highly recommend Elysia Root! She designed our wedding cake exactly how we imagined it (or, a lot better than we imagined it) and it tasted fantastic!
After tasting several different flavors, we went with the banana cake, with both caramel and chocolate buttercreams. Our families were a little thrown off by the choice — but after tasting it, everyone loved it. We got countless compliments at our wedding for both the look and taste of the cake — and we could not have been more pleased with the experience. Elysia is very easy to work with — and compared to other Chicago wedding cake makers, her cakes seem to be a great value. We can’t wait to go back for our one year anniversary cake (which came complimentary)!

Amazing! I have had Elysia make a special cake for my husband of her own design, my only request is that it included a nod to our bulldog. She made a cake in the shape of a couch, with our two dogs sitting upon it. She copied the exact couch and flooring, carpet from a photo we had of them. I have also hired her for my son’s first birthday, I wanted an opulent cake, cupcakes, and cookies– all were amazing, especially her chocolate cake with salted caramel frosting. I love cake and always stop by different bakeries to try cupcakes and these are by far better than any I’ve tasted. She was wonderful with communication and early with delivery and even helped with set-​up of all things. I am only mad she doesn’t yet have her own cupcake shop as they are so good, I dream of them weekly!

Elysia made my son’s Shark birthday cake to rave reviews! It was by far, the most amazing cake I have ever put in my mouth, better than my wedding cake!
I gave her almost no instruction as I am not creative or clever at all in cake designs, just a theme, some general ideas and she created a masterpiece that was almost to adorable to cut! But I had eaten one of her cakes before, so I knew what was inside, so cut we did!
It was a sad day in my house when the last of the leftovers were gone. Go Chocolate Chocolate Chip. You won’t be sorry!

Elysia made our Chicago skyline cake for our 9÷29÷12 wedding and the whole experience was like working with a (very talented) friend!
Elysia is so easy to work with. The space she works out of (Kitchen Chicago) is amazing and the process is fun & painless. I felt like we were a part of the creative process from the beginning.
If you have done wedding cake tastings anywhere else, you will know how special Elysia’s cakes are from the first mouthful. The cakes are so lush & full of flavor. We did 3 different flavors in our 4-​tier cake: Almond cake w/​oreo buttercream, white cake with strawberry purree buttercream, & almond cake with kahlua buttercream/​chocolate ganashe. Our guests couldn’t stop raving about how delicious they all were. I don’t think we had a single piece left!
Elysia’s fondant work speaks for itself– the pictures don’t lie! Her work is amazing and her cakes make for a great focal piece/​photo ops before your guests dig in & devour every last piece!

Elysia made our beautiful wedding cake for our wedding this past June. The cake was elegant, and the detail of the design elements was incredible. The flowers were handcrafted to match the exact flowers in my wedding bouquet (amazing!). The design was exactly what we had talked about during our cake tasting (Elysia even incorporated my love for bows) and definitely fit in perfectly with the rest of the wedding details. The cake was so delicious too. Even months after the wedding, we still had multiple guests comment on how delicious the cake was! I was really happy to have a beautiful custom-​made cake that stood out in design and taste.

Elysia’s cakes are works of art AND wonderfully delicious! She did a custom Hello Kitty! cake for our granddaughter’s 4^th birthday incorporating elements from the invitation and adding amazing fondant details to the two tiered, one of a kind cake. The party guests shared rave reviews and positive comments on the texture and flavor of the chocolate chocolate chip cake and the yummy cookies and cream filling.
Elysia is delightful and must have a 100% customer satisfaction rating. We need a 6^th star for this review!

elysia root is a gem in the world of bakers. her ability to design and create the perfect cupcake/​cookie/​cake/​baked good for any event is remarkable. most recently, i ordered cookies for a baby shower — the only argument was whether they were more delicious than cute or vice versa and in the end, the concensus was that elysia root had yet again been wildly successful in both categories.

Elysia creates amazing cakes and cookies. I have had her gluten free (!) cupcakes at a friend’s son’s birthday party and have ordered many custom gluten free cakes from her. Most notably, she was able to re-​create a gluten free version of our wedding cake for our anniversary. It’s such a special treat and her creations are so, so beautiful. Elysia does an incredible, professional job and uses high quality ingredients. Her gluten free offerings are just the icing on the cake (pun intended). I’ve tried many, many gluten free cakes and Elysia’s are the best! I don’t order from anyone else now.
My husband tried her regular cakes (not gluten free) at our friend’s son’s birthday party and he said they are just as fabulous. Highly recommended for both gluten free and non-​gluten free cakes and cupcakes!
