Duru’s Custom Shirts & Suits

I recently purchased several new suits from Duru’s. I was in the need for a substantial wardrobe jump start for my new job, and Kenny was very helpful in providing his expert advice. He took my needs and limited budget into consideration and suggested I purchase a mix of custom and off the rack suits, as well as patterns that would create a great foundation for my wardrobe. The tailoring was done impeccably, and I can not speak highly enough about how well Duru’s custom suits fit. Best of all, the price was reasonable! Will definitely shop here again when I need more suits!

I bought a Groupon for Durus last year after doing a little research. It was my first suit out of college, so I decided to take a shot at a tailored piece. When I went in they were nice enough, although it felt a little like I had to squabble with them over minute details when I explained what I was looking for in my suit.
I had two ties, two shirts, and a suit made. The ties are ok — they are a bit thin, so they tie a mediocre knot. I picked a paisley pattern, but most of the selection is fairly plain and cautious. Both shirts fit me acceptably; they are slim through the body with a little room in the sleeves. The suit does not fit me well. The pants are wide through the leg with a short inseam that causes the crotch of the pants to sit very low. The jacket is loose and the shoulders are wide for my frame. When I button the jacket, there is too much material between my shoulders and the top button, which causes the lapels to slouch forward awkwardly (and creates a gap in my torso). I’m 5’10 150 — fairly normal build — yet he mentioned how difficult it was to make a suit for my large shoulders and narrow waist (I’m the standard 6 inch drop between shoulder and waist size).
I ended up taking my suit back twice to have it narrowed/​slimmed, and each time it was a process. I always found myself haggling with him over taking the garment in. I understand it’s more work, but I had this conversation with him to start, and he was almost completely unwilling to amend a piece I was unsatisfied with. He likes a more conservative fit, which is fine with me, but not what I was looking for in this particular suit. While he is partial to a conservative fit, I would think he would yield to the request of the customer for their own piece. Apparently not. He ended up taking it in for me, but I still swim in it.
I’ve tried wearing it a few times, but I don’t feel comfortable in the suit. Now I’m trying to sell or recover some of the money I put into it so I can get something I like better. I will not be buying here in the future.

Stopped by to look around as I needed a new suit and ended up ordering one. Kenny was who helped me pick out my material as I am allergic to certain. He was very knowledgeable and I got an amazing price compared to what I was paying for custom suits before. I also ended up ordering 3 custom shirts and bought a couple ties as their selection is great along with quality. Overall an amazing experience and I will follow up with a review once I go back when my suit and shirts come in.

I got a suit and five shirts from these guys. The quality is fine, though I wasn’t sure I was getting a good deal. There was some confusion over pricing, and other reviews suggest that might be a common experience here.

Bought a Groupon. Suit and shirt quality is good, but very very poor service. Ken and Nash can be quite rude at times, and always seem to be scheming on how to make an extra buck and rip you off. Wouldn’t recommend this place — other better tailors out there

Update to my previous post: the fact that they would deny that I was a customer is just the kind of horse manure I expect. Unilocal should make negative stars or flames available. No one should EVER come here even if the suit is buy 1 get three free. The headache is not worth it.
Why the hell would I spend my time reviewing a place I wasn’t a customer of. Corporate espionage? You are a failing suit business nobody cares!!!

I also bought the groupon and got a suit.
You know what would get these guys a 4 star instead of a 2 star… honesty. I felt like I was in the middle of some flea market.
I asked how much the upgraded fabric would be. I was told $ 200. The salesguy i was working with went in the back and a new guy came out and ‘thought’ he was helping. I casually asked him «how much for this upgraded fabric» (just to double check and see if i could get a lower price). He said $ 150. When the original guy came out, i said «it’s my lucky day, he said it is $ 150 and not $ 200». They went in the backroom and when they came out the head guy said «ohhh… no no. i meant the threadcount is 150, not the price».
So… when someone asks how much something costs you tell them what the tread count is?
Long story short… If you want to go in, haggle over the prices, get lied to and then have them treat you like you are an idiot… it’s a great place to go.
I will say that the suit is fits really really well. Even though i upgraded the fabric, it is still ‘so so’.

A few years back, I went into the LaSalle location and ordered 5 custom dress shirts. When I went in 2 weeks later to pick up the order, the sleeves were too short. The owner insisted they were correct, but they were clearly too short. With reluctancy, he agreed to have my order redone. After following up twice with no response except that they were not done yet, I ended up dropping the ball as it was a busy time in my life. Needless to say, I never got ANY shirts from them, but paid for 5 custom tailored dress shirts. These people are crooks! STAY AWAY if you can.

I am a lawyer who works across the street from their LaSalle location.
They did some minimal tailoring on an off the rack suit for me and seemed nice. In fact, they happened to have a couple of high-​end off the rack suits close to my size and I bought them. Nice, Italian suits at an okay price. Very good fabric and workmanship for an off the rack suit.
So I saw a Groupon for a handmade suit and though I’d give it a shot. I usually spend under $ 500 on suits, so even with the Groupon, it was a stretch, even though I could easily afford to pay their full price. I have a few bucks because I am a value shopper and frugal, and make an okay living.
The measuring and fabric selection went okay. I upgraded the fabric to top shelf stuff and it added $ 600 to the price of the suit. i added a blazer to my order for another $ 800 or so, in a high end blue fabric which would wear well. I had been wearing an off the rack blazer which was showing some wear, so I figured, «Hey, may as well get a good one.»
Let me state clearly: a man does not buy a suit to look WORSE than his body type. A man does not buy a suit to look NARROWER in the shoulders and thicker in the waist than he really is. Now, granted, I am not in my weightlifting and boxing prime where I cut an athletic and imposing figure. But I still have broad shoulders even though I could lose some weight.
For reference, at between 5’11″ and 6′, I wear a 48 jacket and an Athletic cut 48 suit fits me close to perfectly.
Simply, a handmade, expensive piece of clothing should make you look BETTER than you are. Accentuate my broad shoulders, and de-​accentuate muh belleh. Or at least not make me look WORSE. I had recently bought 2 Jones New York suits in 48 Athletic and I look GREAT in them.
Somehow, the Blazer makes my shoulder look sloped and narrow and it accentuates my waist. My upper body is sort of oval shaped in this blazer. I kid you not. For a hand-​measured, hand made piece of clothing. Shocking. There is odd extra material in the under-​arm area. I do not know if this was meant to accommodate the fact that I have broad shoulders and somewhat large shoulder girdle for movement, but when my arms are at my sides, I look like I am wearing someone else’s coat, NOT a hand-​made piece of clothing especially for me. My $ 300 on sale Jones New York off the rack Athletic suits don’t look this way.
As to the dress shirts, good material and workmanship but they are cut much too large around the body. The pants fit well and look good. The suit jacket fits awkwardly. It is not flattering. My shoulders do not look quite as narrow as with the Blazer jacket but the bottom of the suit jacket flares out around my hips and bottom in a weird way. I’ve never had any suit from any maker do that, and I have been wearing suits to work for 16 years.
When I pciked up the suits and jacket and tried them on, the guy there seemed genuinely impressed with how «great» I looked. Pure salesmanship. I looked like crap — I looked noticeably worse than when wearing my $ 300 Jones New York suits.
Having never owned hand-​made clothing and being perhaps too timid about whether I liked it or not, and perhaps thinking that I was not seeing it clearly since I’d never owned hand made clothes, and taking the guy’s lead that it looked good, I accepted the items, though I expressed unhappiness with the blazer especially.
Since then, I have tried these items on for 3 different people whose opinions I respect. they all agree– the materials are great. The tailoring is horrible, these do not look like handmade items based on fit. The shoulder look oddly narrow. As a general rule, a man wants broad shoulder tapering to a waist. the shoulder should not look sloped or rounded. the pockest of the jacket area ought not to flare out. A custom shirt should not look like and off the rack shirt, with too much material around the body.
I am making an appointment and taking this stuff back this week, despite having it for a month and stewing over it. Really, I’d like a refund. A complete refund. I could dress like a champ for a year for what I spent at Durus for clothes I will never wear.
Don’t spend thousands to look like a chump. Seriously.

Can you say Bad Service. I went in here with a groupon because I wanted to get a nice tailored suit for a good price. Had I known the owner Ken would be so negative and unhelpful to me, I would have never purchased the groupon and I would have taken my business elsewhere. I read the reviews prior to going in for the fitting and I was expecting to get up-​sold. Basically anything you want costs extra. I ended up upgrading my shirt and a tie and it cost me an extra $ 120 on top of the groupon price.
I got measured for the suit one day, Ken made it seem like the biggest task ever and wasn’t helpful at all when I had questions about what my options were. I would have paid more money for upgrades had he been nice and helpful. I asked to see the different fabrics for the shirts behind the counter, again he made it seem like it was a major task to help a customer out to look at the fabrics and get his opinion. By that time I had pretty much concluded that he was a major douchbag. I pushed forward though because I had already paid for this through groupon, had I not pre-​paid for this, I would have walked out as soon as I walked in.
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT SHOP HERE. EVEN WITH GROUPON. You have been warned.

This was my first experience getting a «customized» clothing. Got a groupon which substantially costs less than if I had to pay their retail price, even with it I don’t think it’s worth it. The quick and dirty on Duru: Mediocre to Satisfactory for entry level customized clothing. You’re gravely mistaken if you expect anything remotely close to a Saville Row quality suit. Nonetheless, a suit here relatively somewhat better than off the rack (OTR), be it Nordstrom, Macy, Hugo Boss, Express. Fit is most important. It’s all or none. With Duru, you get half the fit and so it’s ends up looking crappy regardless.
This was good opportunity for me since It’s hard to find clothes that fit me well as young professional). I’m a healthy BMI of 21 with a good physique compared to my peers whom are overweight/​obese (BMI 30+). So the closest OTR clothes that fit and within my budget are Express when on sale (fitted shirts/​photographer line of clothes), but I can’t afford Brooks Brothers or Hugo Boss regularly. Banana Republic clothes somewhat better. So it’s hard to find a compromise or good fit. Plus my inseam is 31. So all the pants are either too short or long on me (30 or 32 inseam). I suppose I could always get a 32 have it altered inexpensively at a local dry cleaners. Anyways’ the point of this is, that my body is more suited for Euro style/​size as Europeans are leaner and dont’ have obesity epidemic like America. And it’s hard to find euro clothing (casual easier to find, but professional is harder) that’s reasonable (I suppose Zara and H&M are closest here in Chicago).
So anyways, there are other tailors shops (Alteration services at dry cleaners are not tailors! My huge pet peeve when people refer folks who can only alter as «tailors». Tailors can create clothing out of scratch.) Anyways, pardon my fragmented sentence. Other shops include Oscar de la O, De Louice, Zeglio, Balani. So, don’t restrict yourself to Duru’s. How does Duru’s stack up to the others like Zeglio or Balani or Nicholas Joseph? It’s similar, maybe even on a poorer side. Duru’s probably has been around as long as Balani, but Balani has a more impressive showroom. Nicholas Joseph is somewhat new to Chicago, probably opened in the last 3 – 5 years, seeing the Unilocal reviews are from the last couple years. These are places are «made to Measure» rather true «bespoken» suits. (If you don’t know the difference between MTM and bespoken, look online). Anyway, the suit at Duru’s is possibly better than OTR suit. If you think you’re getting top line quality worksmanship for customized by going to Duru’ or Balani, than you are mistaken. There are finer customized clothing by people like Paul Chang (see online forums). For Saville Row quality, Chris Despos is the highest standard (some say Despos is better than SR) and you should ready to put down several grand for a single Despos suit. (Some people into bespoken suits will say it’s a blasphemy that I mentioned Chris in the same discussion about Duru’s).
Duru’s style is more for older clientele.(look at their suits on display). «Older» as in 40’s to 60’s years of age. NJ/​Balani cater to a more younger crowd from my perspective (based on their website contents and Unilocal reviews). Duru will still «accommodate» you if you’re a younger fellow.
The groupon gets you the basics. (Super 120’s). Higher grade fabrics are extra $. Functional cuff buttons, peaked lapel, etc are also probably available but for extra $. Honestly I don’t think my suit is even half canvassed, possibly fused. Here you only get a single fitting unless there’s something obviously amiss. Most places get 2+ fittings. As for the dress shirt, you have a choice of collar and cuff. The dress shirt fabric quality is so-​so. I think it’s their discontinuing inventory (which upsets me). Limited neck tie selection which the styles are for «stuffy men» in their 50’s or 60’s (wide ties with bland colors). Not quite the style for a young guy like me. The somewhat modern tie styles are an upgrade ($ 15). Ties w/​o 100% silk label are suspect and have a polyester feel.
Only the pants fit like a glove. The suit jacket has too much fabric, I can stuff watermelon beween my belly and the jacket. (point of custom suit is to have a jacket that hugs the body properly… complete waste of my money). I pointed this to Kenny but he pretended like it wasn’t problem. Moreover, jacket remained boxy IMO. At least the jacket length was fine.
Honestly, this was not worth it. I got an indochino suit later through their traveling tailor. The Indochino suit jacket fit better but of less quality cloth and worksmanship. Next time, I’m going to try Proper Suit.
Verdict: not worth it even with groupon.

Got a groupon for a suit, 2 shirts and a tie. I upgraded the suit material for an extra $ 400, and it was worth every cent. My new suit and shirts fit me perfectly, which was difficult with off the rack suits.

This place isn’t just for guys.
Ladies, if you have any delicate fabrics that need to be altered and you don’t trust the tailor at the dry cleaner to do it then try this place. I’ve had a few formal dresses altered here and they turned out amazing! One dress needed the straps shortened and instead of folding it over (like most people would do) they cut it so it was completely seamless. Another dress needed to be taken in on the sides but it had boning in the bodice. He took the entire top apart and remade it. Of course I couldn’t tell any difference except that it fit. The best part was I didn’t pay an arm and a leg (especially for all the work he had to do).
As far as customer service goes… it’s top notch! There has been more than a few times he has helped me in a pinch. I was invited last minute to the Marine Corp ball and needed a dress altered in 2 days. I ran in 5 minutes before they closed and he took the time to fit me and had all the work finished in 2 days.

Was brought in by a Groupon at 54% off about 5 weeks ago.
My personal service was conducted by master fitter Kenny Gurnani. After spending about 30 minutes or so going over my options, I decided that it was time to simply go all out and buy the very best that the shop had to offer. At 180 thread count and a sheen that you wouldn’t believe my suit came in approximately 4 weeks after my order.
I can’t put into words what a fantastic job Duru’s did. There is nothing on a man, especially in a woman’s fashion world, like a custom tailored suit.
The measurements were perfect, the attention to detail was fantastic. The suit will last me a long time or until my body simply changes beyond that of alterations. That being said it will be very difficult to ever replace a charcoal 3 piece as it is just as timeless as any other classic fashion piece in your wardrobe.
What prevented me from making this a 5 star review? The shirts and ties. By today’s standard, one can procure a Calvin Klien shirt that is fitted, have it embroidered and come away with a better feel.
In the end, you’re going to this tailor for the quality of the suit. I think you can do better in the accessories at other places.
That being said, I would love to be able to get the same quality suit for the price again in the near future.

I took a shirt in to have the sleeves shortened. For various reasons, the shirt hung in my office for a few weeks after I got it back, and I didn’t get a chance to try it on until today. If the sleeves were in fact shortened, I can’t tell. The tailor’s curt and cursory attitude should have been a clue that the service wouldn’t be that great. No, I won’t be going back.

Was lured into the store by the promise of $ 85 tailored shirts. Of course, the fabric I wanted meant the shirt would cost $ 135… I decide to go for it anyhow; Three weeks later my shirts arrive. I try them on; they fit incredibly and the fabric and workmanship is awesome. Hmm, one shirt is light-​blue instead of white; I complain and the gentlemen appologizes and writes up the paperwork for the original white shirt I ordered. As this light-​blue shirt is tailored for me, he offers to sell it to me at a discount. I pay $ 75 for it even though I really couldn’t spare the money. It’s been a few weeks since gettting my shirts and I just love them. They are ultra comfortable and look perfect. I was surfing today and found Balani tailored shirts which claim to be Chicago’s best. I called and asked their delivery time for dress shirts; they said 4 to 6 weeks and at Duru’s it was only three weeks. Think I’ll stick with Duru’s.
