Blueberry Moon – An Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa

I had my first experience at Bluberry Moon yesterday and I will have to say it was a good one! Katherine did a full set of blonde highlights and it’s probably the best color I have had in a long time! She is so nice and easy to talk to. She explained to me why she was doing certain things and it was so nice to feel involved in the process. I would highly recommend her for blondes!
Only thing was they only accept cash tips and I had no cash on me! Chase quick pay was accepted which was great.

Loved my time here with Frank. He’s a magician with color. He asked to add color to my eyebrows and it completely finished the look. You should go.

This is going to be a slightly strange review as the stylist I went to the salon in the first place is no longer at the salon but since I just signed up to review, this is long over due and deserved.
I was first recommended to the salon through a friend because I was an ombré-​ed brunette, with damaged curly hair, wanting to go full blonde. My friend, who goes from dark to blonde and back on a bi-​monthly basis, encouraged me to check out her hairstylist Jeff. After two terrible disasters at two other salons attempting to take me blonde, I had almost resigned to just dying my hair back dark. The other two stylists had both unprofessionally handled my hair and I ended up with half orange, half grey, brown hair and a Rachel from «Friends» haircut. It was awful.
Went to Jeff in early 2015 to see what could possibly be done, if anything at all. Luckily, Jeff is a hair angel, sent from the hair heaven, to create and correct you to the head of hair from your dreams. Jeff took me from a gross and streaky two toned brunette to literally any shade of blonde I wanted to try ever. He handled my hair slowly and was realistic with the outcomes to minimize any damage I might have from bleaching. At first, I went in with all these instructions, as I had done my research to the T and could not afford any mistakes. Now, I just sit in the chair, asks him what he thinks we should do, sit back, and a few hours later, emerge with hair even better than the last. Last winter, I was full blonde, root to tip, which I absolutely loved. When I realized it was high maintenance, Jeff began incorporating low lights into the hair slowly until I was a balyaged blonde that needed root touch ups every few months. LITERALLY, he is a hair genius and I leave the salon every time in awe, which has never happened with previous hair stylists. Can you imagine just allowing someone control of your head of hair and just trusting it’s going to be great because it always is?
Also, obviously since he is so spectacular, I recommended my best friend, who was looking to go in the exact opposite direction (from light to dark), to him and he’s created the most beautiful hair looks on her, it was crazy. She already has gorgeous long hair, but he took her to a beautiful dark brown, then on her request, a very fiery gorgeous red ombré with, to purple to I honestly no longer remember the spectrum, but her hair was a spectacle in the best way possible.
Also conversations with Jeff are hilarious and entertaining and the best part of the entire experience.
As of very recently Jeff no longer works at the salon, to which I understand makes this review becomes slightly less relevant. However, I’ve had mixed experiences with other staff members in the salon. I’ve had haircuts and a couple of other services done there past getting my hair colored and they were OK, which is why I bumped the rating down a couple of notches.
Katherine, however, does color and was working under Jeff very closely when I had initially began getting my hair done there, and she’s now branched out and is just awesome! Does a fantastic job and is honestly really sweet and easy to talk to when you’re sitting in that chair.
I’m just really heartbroken the salon’s best asset is gone :(

Jeff and Ryan gave me the best blonde coloring and cut I have ever had. Actually, Jeff gave me my first professional dye job, and it was EXACTLY what I wanted. The haircut Ryan gave me was beautiful. It has made me happy on a daily basis. Everyone at the salon is delightful. Looking forward to my next cut and color!

I was invited back for another massage. I have to say, this massage was so much better than the first one. The massage therapist was so attentive. She was always checking if the pressure was hard enough. Adjusting pressure when needed. She was attentive to all my problem spot. I’m so glad I gave this place a try again. Definitely coming back.

I did receive a call back the day I left the review. I would like to reiterate that I do enjoy the services I received from Blueberry Moon and will go back to them. I was irritated with the lack of response from my calls.

I’ve been to Blueberry Moon a couple times for a massage so I thought it would be nice to send my boyfriend there with one of their Groupons. I was totally wrong.
There was miscommunication between the reception desk and the masseuse, he waited 45 mins for a massage with no apologies. We both understand problems occur but please appreciate our time as much as we appreciate yours. An apology or simple courtesy can go a long way. It’s unfortunate we neither one of us will be returning here for any services.

It’s been about 6+ years since i’ve had my hair short and I wanted to try it again. So I made the appt with Annie who is new to the salon (but has been working at Aveda salons for years) and I immediately felt completely comfortable with her. I told her the look I was going for, showed her some pictures and she listened to everything I had to say. She cut about 5 inches off my hair and even though I knew that she listened to what I said I never anticipated it would look as good as it does. She was so thorough and told me everything she was doing while she was doing it– not to mention she is absolutely the most friendly person i’ve ever met. Enjoyed the entire experience, I’m sorry i’m leaving Chicago or she would definitely be my go-​to girl! I love my hair and had so much fun with her! Go check her out!

4 stars for Jeff the color magician! He is one of the best in Chicago. As for the salon I get it a 2, when you go to a high end salon tit shod be pretty and comfortable. The owner needs to redo the floor and freshin up the space I mean look at this floor.

So one Saturday I was having a stressful start to my day and my daughter suggested I should get a massage. On a whim, I decided to stop into Blueberry Moon to see if they took walk ins. I got lucky in more ways then one.
With a short ten minute wait (due to a cancelation), I was on my way to being pampered. The décor there had a zen like serene feel. When I stepped into the spa room and onto the warm table/​blanket I was in heaven. Katarina, a young, sweet and soft spoken young lady who is so knowledgeable and passionate about her skills in massage therapy was tremendous. Her hands were soothing as she worked her magic on my back that has been giving me problems for quite some time. She also found the source of my pain stemming from another area of my body and explained why and how that would happen. After an hour of heavenly bliss, I wax so relaxed, happy and totally amazed that I found this place and the best masseuse in town. Props to Blueberry Moon Aveda Salon, can’t wait to try they’re other services.

All I can say is don’t do it. I am very laid back about my hair and have never gotten upset about it. However, the last time I came here was in February for a cut and color. I wanted Jeff to just add a little more contrast to my Ombré. After the color Ryan gave me a cut and curled it and sent me on my way. I always feel like the lighting in there isn’t quite the same as home so I waited until I got home to really look at it. What I saw was beyond comprehension. Instead of giving me more contrast I had black steaks in the blond ombré portion and then instead of putting a gloss on my dark brown roots my roots were orange. I felt like a calico cat– my hair was blond, brown, orange and black. And to make it worse the blond was ashy and the roots were not, I was two toned. I’m not sure how Ryan cut and styled my hair without at least asking Jeff if this was what he was going for bc I dint think anyone in their right mind would’ve liked what my hair looked like.
Being trusting, I called the salon and made arrangements to have Jeff try to fix it. 5 hours later I left the salon again with orange hair… exactly what I told him I wanted fixed. I asked him to just make it all ashy blond.
I’ve lived all over the country but have used Aveda salons for the past 15 years bc I knew the quality was there. Not anymore. Done.
I have now found a great girl who actually listens to me and promised I would never pay for a cut/​color that I didn’t like.

I have lived in Chicago for the past 5 years — no matter where I move, I always end up coming back to Blueberry Moon. I tried other salons but it’s hard to find a stylist that understands your hair and can consistently give you a great cut. Although the staff has undergone some changes, Madeline continues to be there. Don’t ever leave us girl!
Also shout out to Miles for killer massages. Definitely worthwhile to check out their spa treatments.

I initially started coming here just because I lived nearby (and I am not a huge Aveda product fan), but even after I moved to a different neighborhood I keep coming back because Ryan is the best!!! He has been doing my hair for about five years now and is worth every penny. I have super thick, long hair and he always gives me the best haircuts and styles it in just an hour – I have had stylists tell me that I need to book a double appointment before just because my hair is so thick. My layers always grow out well, so I can go a little longer between haircuts. He’s also extremely nice and easy to talk to and gives me lots of styling tips!

To update my review:
I stand by the fact that my hair was not done properly.
The manager responded to my review in the same was that she responded to my emails 8 months back: Defensive, condescending, and blamed me for the fact that my hair was not done properly.
She made me feel terrible for having an issue with the way my hair was done. She humiliated me by telling me I had a «great deal of breakage» My pictures that I attached to this review make it perfectly clear the way I looked before my service was performed, what I was expecting, and how I looked after.
She blamed the «quality of my hair’ on the reason that the DARK BROWN dye did not take to my hair, but refused to explain why dark brown color was applied to my hair to begin with. I was under the impression that I was very subtly adding a bit of dimension to my blonde, and at no point did I think or ask to be any other color than blonde. Also it was never mentioned to me in my consultation that Jeff had any concerns with the quality of my hair, and if he would have even hinted that he thought it would not go well, I would not have had the service performed, I never demanded to have my hair dyed.
The manger even went as far to say that she wished everyone could look like a «magazine clipping» that they brought in. I never brought in a magazine clipping, I had several photos on my phone and Jeff was very honest with what he thought would be a good fit for me, and we decided on the photo that I attached to this review, a photo from a salon that my cousin went to in GA that was taken on an iPhone, not a magazine clipping. Plus it’s not 1993, so people don’t bring those to salons anymore.
The manager stated that I refused to show her my hair in person, definitely not true: I specifically made a trip to Chicago the weekend I had my hair done, at the time I lived/​worked in West Lafayette, IN, a 2 hour drive away, and I worked 8am-6:30pm Monday through Saturday, my schedule simply did not allow for it, I offered to come in the next time I was able to make a trip to Chicago the following month, but at the manager’s request I sent the very photos that are attached to this review.
As far as abuse and threats, it simply did not happen. My friend even sent me the email that she sent to the manager after my experience and the only thing we could possibly think of as a «threat» was a sentence where she told the manger that she wanted to bring this issue directly to her attention instead of going straight to social media. I would think that is less of a threat and more of a professional courtesy.
If my review can save even one person from having to deal with this manager, It will have been worth it. It is very clear that her reply was for no other purpose than to try embarrassing me and bully me with the thin veil of «I’m sorry we disappointed you» seeping with backhanded insults. She showed her true colors, and I am validated in the fact that anyone who reads her reply can agree with the fact that she refused to take responsibility, insulted the quality of my hair and accused me of lying that I had never dyed my hair before. I had to email her a photo of me when I was 5 years old with the same color hair.
It was a valuable lesson for me though, there will always be people out there who simply cannot take constructive criticism and will go out of their way to make others look foolish without even realizing that the true fool is themselves.
My review was in no way meant to hurt Jeff or any of the other staff, they were all quite nice, and clearly so many people love this salon, their stellar reviews are what brought me in to begin with.
Everyone has off days, but unfortunately for me, it caused my hair to be ruined for 8+ months. It was not my fault, as much as the manager would like to shout from the mountain tops, and I hope that this is helpful to anyone that has fine, blonde hair and wants to make a subtle change.

I’m always nervous about going to a new place, especially since I have an unusual 1960s vintage subculture haircut. But after reading many reviews, I decided on Blueberry Moon. I couldn’t be happier!
Frank was amazing for color, and I walked out with no greys (what greys?) and feeling good. He even found me a bag for my deteriorating shopping bag — so nice!
I also met with Ryan for a fringe/​bangs trim. He was great, truly interested in my consultation for a future haircut, and the trim was perfect!
Both were friendly, listened, suggested things and gave me what I wanted. No one pushed products, but were happy to discuss which ones were great when I asked. They were very upfront about prices before starting any services which I appreciated.
The salon is relaxing and peaceful with stone feature decoration and wonderful tasting and smelling Aveda tea. I will be back! Don’t forget cash only tips — you will want to tip for such great service.

I have been going to Blueberry Moon for a number of years now and always been happy with their services, but now that they did my wedding hair, I will always have love for this salon. I had been getting my hair cut and styled by Kennedie for a long time. When she left the salon a few months before my wedding, I was sort of crushed. I figured this was one of the things people warn you about while you are wedding planning — «be prepared for something to go very wrong» they say. I freaked out, but the owner was super nice and suggested that their stylist Ryan should do my hair instead and that everything would still be amazing. It was! As soon as I met Ryan at my bridal trial, my anxiety was gone. He really knows hair and did the style exactly like what I wanted. He’s seriously the best. The day of my rehearsal, I had a blowout and a mani pedi. They kept me hydrated with plenty of water and tea while I relaxed and had an awesome afternoon of pampering to kickoff the weekend
The next day was my styling, first thing. We were worried about my style staying since I had my hair done on the day of the wedding pretty early and it was a pretty windy day, so Ryan honestly did everything in his power to make sure the curls wouldn’t fall too much and that I would look amazing even after many hours of pictures and hugs. Even after the entire day and a lot of dancing, my hair held up and looked amazing. Looking at pictures toward the end of the night, I can’t believe how well it stayed. I loved my style and had so many compliments on it, but I still looked like a more glam version of me, not someone else. They also did my mother and my sister’s hairstyles — they loved them and looked gorgeous. Everything was perfect.
Ryan is so talented and on top of that he is so nice and easy to talk to. Jennie the owner was responsive and so helpful in the scheduling and planning. Christina did my nails and she was so great as well. A million thanks to Blueberry Moon for making me feel amazing on my wedding day. I would tell any bride-​to-​be to check them out, especially if your wedding is in or around Lincoln Park. They are the best!

I just had the best haircut and blowout EVER by Ryan. I will have absolutely no commitment issues with him — this is my new salon.
Did I mention he only took one hour to do the cut and blowdry? Uhh, yea — that’s unheard of. Every salon I have ever been to has always asked me to request a two hour slot when making my appointments because of my hair texture (wavy/​curly) and length. I was dealing with amateurs.
Ryan is the real deal.
I also like that he let me be my quiet self, I’m not much of a talker when meeting new people — and it wasn’t awkward, it was absolutely relaxing. As was the head and hand massage.

Don’t forget to take cash with you for your tip, and give more than 20%. They deserve it.

I don’t think I could say enough good things about Blueberry Moon. Frank did my color and I don’t think I’ve ever walked out of a salon happier than I did earlier today. If you have red and/​or curly hair I 100% recommend Frank for all of your needs.
The stylists do a fantastic job of teaching you about the Aveda products without pressuring you to buy anything, which I really appreciate. You also receive a free scalp and hand massage with your services.
I’m very particular and did a lot of research on hair salons before choosing this one for my color. After my appointment, I can assure you that this is the only place I will be going as long as I reside in Chicago. So happy I chose Blueberry Moon! Thank you, Frank!

Booked a Consultation for Color with Frank and felt right at home. He is very knowledgable with color and had great recommendations for me. Frank made the Aveda experience. My end result is a beautiful fiery RED! Thank you Frank! I will be back in 8 weeks.

I went to Marla for color correction on my ombré. I have dark brunette hair, and she listened to everything I wanted and did an excellent job on my color. It’s really easy to have ombré-​gone-​wrong, but since Marla colored my hair, I’ve gotten nothing but compliments.
They’re also very accommodating when making an appointment. I had to squeeze in a root touch up a day before an interview, and even though Marla wasn’t available, they were able to squeeze me in on short notice. I saw Frank, who did an excellent job as well.
I’ve only done color here, but after two great experiences, I will be back to try a cut as well.
