Bei Dou Kung Fu Chicago

An all around excellent experience. Shifu Wu is as talented a martial artist as you will find anywhere, and he is an equally talented teacher. Shifu Wu is always quick with a smile, patient and responsive.
Classes are demanding and training at Bei Dou Kung Fu will increase your flexibility, strength and fitness. You’ll learn to perform all sorts of jumping kicks, cartwheels, head flips, kip ups, and other acrobatic moves, not to mention the extensive weapons training.
Bei Dou has a rack full of traditional Wushu weapons and Shifu Wu is a master of every one of them. Students routinely learn to use the wooden staff, broad sword and straight sword. I’ve seen more advanced students learn the three section staff, chain whip, hook swords and fan. I started learning my first weapon after only a couple months, so it wasn’t a long wait, and in the meantime, the hand forms were fun and challenging.
Another reviewer mentioned the price, I think the best way to consider the cost is to keep in mind that you are getting small classes with personal attention. Typically classes are around 4 to 7 students, but I have had classes with as few as 1 other student. I train twice a week for $ 120, so the cost is about $ 15 per lesson. Compare this with the cost of a personal trainer and you’ll see it is actually a pretty reasonable price. I used to be a member of a health club, but after a short period at Bei Dou I realized the gym was unnecessary. When I started at Bei Dou I was 200lbs, after six months I was down to 175lbs, all from the rigorous training at Bei Dou with Shifu Wu.
After class is officially over it is not uncommon for students to hang around and do a little extra training on their own, using the facilities, Shifu Wu never minds this and in fact he encourages it, as he wants to see his students grow in their martial arts skills.
My son is only 2 years old, so not old enough yet to train Wushu, but when he is of age, he’ll be coming to Bei Dou as well. I’ve observed Shifu Wu working with children and he’s a demanding but caring teacher. The students like him, respect him, and blossom under his teachings.

Great students of all levels, very friendly and disciplined atmosphere, and master wu helps individualize your instruction and at home practice. Very patient guy with tons of experience.
The kung fu here is solid, and a solid workout, but I can’t afford that on a teacher’s salary! So like I said, if you have the money, and can also afford a gym membership on top of this unless you are a parkour practitioner, there are other less expensive martial arts options available in Chicago.

My daughter has been taking Kung Fu lesson for a year. Master Wu is amazing! He approaches the kids respectfully and firmly. If he gives a child a direction and they don’t understand what he wants or don’t hear him he continues giving the direction until the kids respond how he wants. His classes are fun and challenging.

I enjoy going to Bei Dou kung fu classes. The teacher, Jingchao Wu, is a world class kung fu champion. He came from the same Chinese national team that Jet Li went to. He is attentive. Even though a regular class has 3 – 7 people, you feel like you are getting a lot of personal attention. Every student is at his/​her own pace in terms of learning progress and the Master Wu would remember exactly where each student left off from their previous classes! It is a place where you can go and get an amazing workout, improve flexibility, lose weigh, and do acrobatic things that you never imagine you can do. Like!!!

Master Wu is incredible. The people are great. Wish he’d open a school in Michigan :) if you’re in Chicago and you go any where else you’re crazy.

If you’re looking for a great workout while learning Kung Fu, this is the place you want to sign up. I’m 32yrs old and have lost 50 pounds in about half a year at AllStar Kung Fu. At the same time you will be learning self defense and Shaolin forms & weapons skills. With so many martial arts schools out there it’s hard to decide which to go to… especially if you’re just starting out like I was. Let me assure you, the masters at this school are extremely skilled and very professional. After starting out at AllStar Kung Fu a couple times a week as a complete martial arts beginner, I now attend class daily because I enjoy it so much.

If your looking for the preeminent contemporary Chinese wushu school in the midwest this is it. Every wushu school in the Chicagoland area has ties in one way or another here.
Workouts are taught by Chinese professionals and are geared to bring out your best, weather that is in san shou, wushu, or tai chi.

Being a chubby and unatheletic female with limited flexibility, I was surprised by the amount of martial arts skills I learned at Championship. I attended classes there for about a year before the switchover to All-​Star Kung Fu by new teachers from China. The quality of teaching is the same as before. You’ll meet lots of nice, creative, and passionate people there who go to better themselves rather than to show off. It’s better than any trendy gym’s lame kick boxing class (which I went to with a female friend and was horrified by the overweight and sloth like instructor and the crazed flailing of arms by the confused attendees…).
You can learn weapons, bare hand techniques, San Shou, grappling, self defense, Tai Chi and flashy Wushu forms from real professionals dedicated to teaching students. You will become much more flexible than you can ever imagin. And you will learn discipline and the power of mind over body. The teachers are super nice and they don’t play favorites with more athletic students. Everyone starts out from the basics and everyone gets equal attention. I highly recommend it to everyone of all ages, even kids. It’s great for relieving stress for both working professionals and students. It’s very close to the DePaul campus, just a bus ride down Fullerton towards Ashland.
Aside from the awesome learning experience, go and make friends with the zanie and fun people!
