History

Established in 2013.

In 1991 I was nearing the end of my teaching career and I truly despised going to work each day. Previous to this I was given the opportunity to travel to Yellowstone National Park to study wolves and thier behavior in thier natural habitat and from there my passion for animals was exposed. I was fortunate to find a business for sale that I could call my own called the Outpost Supply, and with the support of family purchased the business and Thomaston Feed was born! I quit my job as a teacher and with the help of my family and a lot of schooling I (we) were fortunate enough to be successful to this day thanks to our amazing and loyal customers! If you love what you do you will never work a day in your life! In 2013 the opportunity to open a second store in the fantastic town of Cheshire arose and the rest is history!

We LOVE this store. I have three large dogs with different issues– (one with skin, one with an extremely discriminating palate, one with anal glands :/​ACK) Nicci worked with us trying different foods and ended up with a great one that solved our issues. Less anal gland problems and less skin issues– we couldn’t be happier customers– although some of us could probably care less about the stinking and scratching as long as I come home with chicken feet and water buffalo horns.

We had always fed Iams or purina to my dogs and they always constantly smelled bad. Their teeth were bad, their skin and coat smelled. Like Fritos! And just smelly dog. They also had an anal gland problem. My vet didn’t see an issue. Because smelly dog and anal gland problems aren’t serious health issues. But it was an annoyance in my life.
Someone told me about Thomaston feed and how I might want to switch foods. So I went over to Cheshire one day and Nicci switched me to different brand of food called natures variety. She said because it’s a richer food, I don’t have to feed as much. My dog was overweight at the time so she told me to feed him a little less.
Which is perfect because I have dachshunds and it is dangerous for them to be over weight because they are prone to back problems.
Within a week of them being in the new food, they stopped smelling. I couldn’t believe it. When we ran out of the Natures Variety, my father started feeding them pedigree without my knowledge and I noticed them smelling again! And sure enough I found out they had been eating something different.
There is no denying that there are good and bad foods out there for your dog. And Nicci is very passionate and will take the time to explain the difference between the different foods. And it turned out she was right! My dogs are older now. I have a 10 year old and a 14 year old and they are now extremely healthy and active!

My dog was having some digestive issues, and did not seem to like the dog food I was feeding him. So, I decided to try another route.
I explained to the young girl these problems, and she gave me an alternative brand and some instructions on how to transition from the old to the new dog food.
It’s been about three months now, and he not only eats the food happily, but his digestive issues are much better.
They are always helpful, friendly and knowledgable.

We love these folks! We have enjoyed every visit every time. They treat as as special and more importantly they pay attention to our little pup. Our pup, three years old, loves coming here too and looks for the special treats she gets when she arrives. We trust their recommendations and we always leave with quality products and comfort knowing these folks truly care about our pet — they too get they are truly members of the family.

Stopped in here to see what they had to offer and pricing. I walked through the isle and no pricing on anything. I asked the girl why she said due to a competitor issue?!
I am from Bethany I don’t know who the competitor is but I was just treated like crap by a young girl acting to know more about dog food than myself (who’s owned dogs and bred then for many years) and my Vet who is very well known, knows German breeds, and has done allergy testing and this girl proceeded to tell me Vets don’t know as much as the owner and my dog food is garbage that I feed…
Um hello you don’t insult someone a future buyer like that AND my dog food sorry it’s not garbage its Canidae Pure Grain Free and it works for my working dog. Not all dog foods are good for all dogs. This dog food works for my 5 yr old dog so to tell me it’s garbage was an absolute insult!
Maybe owner should rethink or retrain staff as this person was cocky, has no people skills, and definitely shouldn’t be in customer service.

04÷22÷16 — still have the best price on Natural Balance, but something has changed with how it’s run. I’m not sure if the owners changed or if it’s just new employees, but it’s not a friendly atmosphere anymore. No greeting when you walk in and they won’t even thank you after you pay.
Old review — Best place to buy Natural Balance dog food. I live in Naugatuck and have tried many of the other pet supply stores in the area but this one has the best price.

Happy to have a local store like this, They helped me pick out a less expensive better quality food for my dogs and they seem to be healtheir. Usually one person working at a time so if you need consultative advice you may need to wait in line. Everyone is friendly.

I absolutely love this place. I have been a loyal customer for a couple years now– since the dog food I WAS getting from the big box stores & feeding my babies got recalled-​AGAIN. The owner took the time with us and asked us our specific needs and likes when it came to pet food. The employees are very knowledgeable about pet care, and are not pushy in any way. It’s a pleasant experience every time I go there. Our pets are happier and healthier. Happy critters make happy parents.

Over the years one of my 3 dogs has been struggling with fatty tumors that have costed me several thousands of dollars for removal. The vet never gave me any reason for this and i felt like i was trapped in a terrible cycle! After bringing her in the owner helped explain why and reasons for this! They have changed my life and have saved me SOOOO much money! After this is all said and done, they have the best prices around, much better than any corporate building or other business in Cheshire/​Waterbury/​Hamden/​Southington Area! Thank you Nicci and Mark for making my life sooo much better… You are the definition of professionals.

This store is new to Cheshire and I had a great experience here today. I got there at 5:15 not realizing that it closes at 5pm. The owner must have seen me, and asked me if I wanted to come in. I repeatedly said no it is ok! But he said it is OK, he was just about to lock up. I quickly went in and was out of there in no time. I buy my two fur-​babies Natural Balance dog food (which is usually 50 – 60 $ per bag) and here with tax for the 28lb bag was $ 52.10. This is a great price, and Petco (with a coupon of some kind) is usually around $ 56 for the same food. They also have a frequent buyer club for this food (and probably other dog foods as well) and keep track of it so after you buy 12 bags, the 13th is free. One suggestion for this place is to actually label everything in the store, they have pieces of paper with the prices on it (makes it a little of a chore) They also have chicken feed, rabbit food, and other small animal supplies. Overall, very satisfied and I will go here from now on to get all of my dog supplies!
