Women’s Health Practice

Women's Health Practice is terrible. Do yourself a favor, and NEVER make an appointment here. There is something seriously mentally wrong with Dr. Trupin, possibly even demonic. A true wolf in sheeps clothing.

This is a wonderful practice for women in the area and I have been here frequently over the past 5 years. Dr. Trupin is open-​minded, helpful, easy to speak to, and she is dedicated to my well being. I’ve lost weight and look and feel better under her watch! She is a true professional running a successful business to be admired!

I have been going to Dr. Trupin for about a year now. I have had 3 OB/​GYN and I am 35– she is BY FAR the best I have been to. She always listens and is not pushy. She is proactive in her style and I appreciate that. Her staff is wonderful. I highly recommend her.

First off, I wish that I hadn’t read all the reviews of this place because when I went in, I was so anxious that my blood pressure was through the roof! I am dealing with infertility and the last thing I needed was someone barreling over my needs and concerns. Which, based off some of these reviews, I was worried would happen. But after some bad experiences at the bigger clinics in town, I was kinda desperate to try someplace different. Some place that would treat me like an individual where I could get some individualized care – rather than be pushed through the «infertility machine» of the larger clinics.
This was, by far, the best experience I have ever had with a doctor. Yes, Dr. Trupin is a little… out of the ordinary. She came in with wild hair, big glasses, and converse all-​stars on. She talks a lot and she talks animatedly so I can see how that might put off somebody who may not be comfortable speaking up. But, she was super positive and really upbeat. She listened to ALL my concerns and addressed them in a very thorough and professional manner. I actually felt LISTENED to – a far cry from the last doctor I met with. She even talked to me about some procedures and things I should be thinking about in the near future based off my family history. I really appreciated that.
I was also due for a pap, so we did that right after our consultation. The procedure was the quickest I’ve ever experienced and there was absolutely no discomfort at all. Not even a twinge of pain (I know every woman is different, but I too have experienced painful paps and this certainly was not one).
The receptionist got me checked in quickly and was very polite. No problems there. The nurse that took my vitals and got me ready for the doctor was also very sweet and helpful.
I did not have to wait very long at all to see the doctor. I think I was in the exam room maybe ten minutes after my scheduled appointment and actually waited in the room for about 5 minutes before the doctor came in.
I should also mention that she only mentioned Hada once and it was kind of in passing. She never mentioned any kind of skin care products to me. And, honestly, I don’t have the greatest skin in the world. It’s better than it used to be, but it is far from perfect.
I know everyone has different experiences, but I just wanted to share mine because it truly was a positive one and I’d like to give hope to some who feel they only have two choices out there.

This was also the worst medical experience of my life.
My first contact with their office was when I called to schedule an IUD consultation and insertion. The receptionist with whom I spoke told me that I would be able to get the IUD inserted in the same appointment as the consultation. I double checked that she was sure about this, since they were scheduling several months out and I wanted to schedule the insertion appointment at that point if it required two appointments. She assured me that the insertion and the consultation happen on the same day.
I was very nervous about the procedure, so I took the day off of work. My boyfriend also took the day off in case I needed moral support or post-​insertion care. I got a single Valium pill from my general practitioner to help get me through the procedure, and took it ahead of the appointment. When I got there, the nurse told me that they do insertions and consultations as separate appointments, and that they order IUDs for patients ahead of time so there was no way I could get it done. I was quite upset, given the adjustments I had made to get the procedure done that day, which I told the nurse. She said that she would check to see what they could do. I was then left alone in the exam room for upwards of 45 minutes.
She came back in and told me that they would give me an IUD that had been reserved for someone else. I had two or three clarification questions about what to expect with an IUD based on the research that I had already done, and it was clear that she did not know the answers, but she answered the questions anyway (with obviously incorrect answers).
As other reviewers have noted, Dr. Trupin’s bedside manner is terrible. She made me feel as if I was an inconvenience to her and commented that doing my IUD procedure was taking time away from her other patients.
When they inserted the IUD, it was so painful that I flinched involuntarily and squeezed the hand of the nurse. She yelled, «OW!,» glared at me, and told me that I had hurt her. Dr. Trupin said, «You moved too much, so it may have perforated your uterus,» and they both walked out, rather than talking to me about the implications of this. I started crying because I was upset and in pain. I asked the nurse who stayed to please get my boyfriend from the waiting room, and she refused. She then asked me why I was crying rather than offering any comfort or support to me.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, their office staff called to berate me because I told my insurance the date that I got the procedure done. Since they gave me someone else’s IUD, they wanted me to lie to my insurance agency about the date of the procedure. The staffperson was incredibly condescending and rude to me about the fact that I had not lied.
Generally, the staff members with whom I interacted were, to varying degrees, misinformed, disorganized, unprofessional, uncompassionate, and potentially even unethical. Since my own experience, I have heard similar experiences from friends– I have never met anyone who had a good experience here. They should be ashamed that they offer such poor service to women on such sensitive health issues.

I am a student at the U of I and I typically go to McKinley for my health needs. I decided to venture out and try Women’s Health Practice since I saw an ad for the practice on the Daily Illini’s website. I visited the website and was impressed. I also liked that they weren’t shy that they provide abortion services. I greatly admire doctors who provide abortion services and I admire the ones who don’t mind hiding that they provide this procedure.
I visited Dr. Trupin for a routine pap in order to get a refill for my birth control.
Dr. Trupin came in and was very nice, listened to my concerns, and all that jazz.
Then came time for the exam. I’m sitting in the chair, preparing myself for the exam and the first thing out of Dr. Trupin’s mouth is about the facial hair on my chin and my acne. Uhm, I came for a pap and a prescription for birth control-​not a consultation on my skin. I was very put off by this. So, Dr. Trupin goes into a little spiel about how I should get this checked out and how they offer skin services at Women’s Health Practice.
I couldn’t get the exam done because of personal issues and Dr. Trupin asks, «You have sex, don’t you?» in a way that made me uncomfortable. She just ASSUMED the exam would be easy if you have heterosexual sex. Well, I don’t have heterosexual sex and I would think any gynceologist worth their salt would know better than to assume all of their patients are heterosexual or engage in sexual intercourse.
I felt pressured to hear the whole sales pitch by her staff regarding the skin services they offer so I consented to hear the whole pitch.
I had my blood drawn for some service they offer where it can tell you a bunch of stuff such as your cholesterol levels, estrogen levels, Vitamin D levels, etc. Thankfully I am covered by a health insurance company that covered the service because the blood test was around $ 3,000 according to the statement my insurance company sent me.
If you have the money for skin care services and want to get a pap smear and some facial treatments done, be my guest.
If you just want gynecological services in a low-​pressure environment, go elsewhere.
I ended up making an appointment with McKinley and had a wonderful experience.

I’ve been going to WHP for about 4 years now. They aren’t all together bad, but there are some things that I’ve learned about that office that people should be aware of before they decide to go here.
Dr. Trupin is flighty. She’s a whirlwind. Every time I’ve gone in, she opens the door and plops down on a chair and right away starts talking. No introducing, just starting in on the symptoms and what you might have. She’s blunt and quirky, but she will listen to you if you tell her what you need or want. You just have to be forthright. It’s almost like she’s borderline Asbergers or something. And since she’s involved with HADA and waaaaay into skin care and other crazy treatments, she’ll push it on you. Just tell her no thanks and that you are just fine the way you are. Once you get past all of that, she actually IS a good doctor and has done a lot for the women in this community.
The office staff is okay. Polite for the most part, but can sometimes rub you the wrong way. You’ll also need to call them instead of wait for them to call you. Even when you have tests done, YOU need to call them. They’re just not on top of calling people back and following up with their patients. The ultrasound techs have been nice and they flobotamists have been really nice too, so that’s a plus.
All in all, go here if you feel you are a strong enough personality to put up with a flighty, blunt, but well-​meaning doctor who DOES know her sh*t about women’s issues. Go here especially if you know that certain things run in your family that could cause issues with pregnancy, periods and other woman issues. If you handle them right, you’ll find out what you need to know.

I’m excited to know I can « Unilocal» about this… I would hate for anyone whatsoever to go through anything I went through, I wish I could give it zero stars.
The place seems inviting but it’s far from being a warm, safe, friendly environment of a doctors office. The receptionist, while not so «outright» rude to me but to many others I witnesses coming and going. They gossip and whisper about the patients constantly, especially as I witnessed, if you don’t really have any money and might be seeking help… They are pretentious and down right rude. My own personal experiences have more to do the doctor herself. The most horrible bedside manner, with no real care about what she’s doing, waiting times are horrendous. Knowing my allergies, she carelessly and thoughtlessly prescribed my something with my allergen in it!!! It would have been a nice heads before I popped a couple of the pills to have known that or have been consulted about the drug itself. Worst thing was, after paying for the drug I was clearly allergic too, I still had to pay for it and a new RX, something I wasn’t allergic too! They wouldn’t pick up the cost of the drug they should have never prescribed me and I had zero use for! One top of all that let’s think about our insurance and co-​pays, I should have never had to go back for another out of pocket visit! Her practice is a joke and her skin business is too, very unprofessional with a careless «get’em in, get’em out» attitude.
Funny thing is, I initially chose this clinic to look for a more personal doctor/​patient experience outside of a big «hospital setting»… I can’t imagine how much more awful I would have been treated if I was a young, desperate, uninsured woman… I’ve witnessed a lot with those horrendous waiting times. You can’t not notice it as everything echoes from their front desk.
Do yourself a favor, Do not put yourself through misery at this place!

This place is not so great. Although some of the people working there were really nice and helped me out, the office staff are totally incompetent, not to mention rather rude. They are terrible about not returning phone calls, overcharging for appointments, mixing things up, etc. And often you have to wait forever and when you ask them what’s going on, they just treat you like a nuisance.
Once I got a laparoscopy and I was supposed to get another procedure but that was never done because another patient was hemmoraging and Dr. Trupin had to attend to their needs because they were having more of an emergency. Fortunately, I was never charged for the non-​existent procedure, but they should have done what they told me they would do. Not an excuse.
Also, the appointments are very expensive.

The worst medical appointment of my life was here at Women’s Health Practice. I had initially emailed Dr. Trupin regarding a prior medical condition and because she is regarded in the community as an excellent doctor, I wanted to speak with her personally. After communicating over email, I set up an appointment at her request for what I thought would be an exam. Upon arrival, I waited in the waiting room for one hour with no explanation of what was going on. During that time, a woman who was contemplating an abortion came in and out. The front office staff were speaking quite liberally about her situation, which left me feeling very stunned and disgusted. Issue number one of many.
Once someone finally did come and get me, they brought me into Dr. Trupin’s office where they asked me for a basic overview of sexual history, etc. «Fine,» I thought, «I just hope they hurry up because I need to go back to work!» No one ever came in and asked me to change for what I thought was going to be my exam. Finally, after 45 minutes (I was very concerned about my situation, which is why I stayed instead of going back to work) Dr. Trupin walks in without any apology for her delay. She pounces down in her chair and I ask her about my medical concern. She answers my question very briefly, and then continues on by telling me that what I should be worried about in the future – and specifically related to childbirth – is my weight. This in and of itself is not inappropriate, but starts giving me examples of all of the really bad food she assumed I am eating (because overweight people enjoy the taste of ramen, mayonnaise and instant mashed potatoes 100% of the time. It is a FACT.). I explained that I do not think that this is my problem necessarily, and I would prefer to talk about the thing that I am actually concerned about. Well, tough cookies for me, because then she starts talking about (and I am paraphrasing) how I should take Alli and I shouldn’t eat McDonalds because it will make me «leaky.» I. Wanted. To. Die. I also told her that that was not happening.
Increasingly I became more uncomfortable, although this woman who is too in love with herself is too oblivious to tell, so she sends in a nurse who specializes in medical studies at their practice. At this point my heart is in my stomach, and I explain to the nurse that I am not doing any studies, or taking Alli, and eating mashed potatoes is not my problem. She is not hearing it. She gives me a food journal and reiterates the importance of not eating ramen, and that Women’s Health Practice has some weight loss programs that I could be involved with. I finally told her I had to go and after three hours of hell, finally left. I am never letting a medical practice walk all over me like this again.
It seems to me that this is a practice that is much more interested in getting people involved in their research/​studies, than they are in doing actual medical exams that can give patients peace of mind. I am never going back here again. It truly was my worst experience with a medical practitioner ever.

If I could rate this center less than one star, I would give it a zero.
On Monday, April 29, 2009, I came in to have an Intra Uterine Device (IUD) put in by Dr. Suzanne Trupin, the head doctor at women’s health practice.
-(Rude) When Trupin entered the room where I was waiting for her, she didn’t bother to introduce herself or ask me for my name.
-(Ill Service) The nurse practitioner (JoAnn) didn’t counsel me on the benefits and cons of both types of IUD’s (the way I expected), and I felt somewhat rushed through the questions regarding my health.
-(Ill Service) A few minutes later when the procedure was starting, Trupin, JoAnn, and a second nurse practitioner came in, and the latter looked at my lower body and gave me a disapproving look, making me feel inadequate and shamed to try to get their services.
Then, Trupin looked at my face and loudly remarked «Girrrrl! You’re breaking out!», in a most tactless and insensitive way. I was not there to treat my skin, so why would my skin be of any concern to her?
During the procedure, Trupin was careless and insensitive. She dealt with me as if I were one of her plastic models.
-(Insensitive) When she was done, she simply left the room without *even* saying «bye» or «get rest».
-(being rushed out of the room) I was in so much pain, I could not sit due to the harsh procedure, and still, after 15 minutes, I was being rushed out by a blonde middle-​aged nurse who entered the room, and without even bothering to ask me if I needed, she put a cold paper towel against my forehead and rambled about how I should go home.
When we needed Trupin for an emergency, she was gone for the weekend, and no one in her office could see me, they claimed, so I had to go Carle’s Emergency Room for the pain.
-(playing phone tag with customers) Then a few days after that, I was bleeding profusely from the area where the procedure was made, and we called Trupin’s office and asked them to have a nurse call back and NO NURSE CALLED BACK THE WHOLE DAY, we had to play «phone tag» with them all day long to *finally* speak to JoAnn, one of the practitioners, who had a lousy excuse about their computers being down, trying to excuse their incompetence.
She was unable to answer my questions, and overall responded with «I don’t know».
-(SECRET CHARGES made) Later, we learned that Women’s Health Practice was charging us for an additional Pregnancy Test, which we never requested. They kept it secret from us during our consultation!
***Overall, Women’s Health Center and Dr. Trupin’s service was remarkably rude, impersonal, tactless, and wholly without care of a miserable shred of the patient’s well being neither during the procedure nor after. ***
In addition, the staff at the center were dishonest and unhelpful and unknowledgeable.
I have nothing positive to say, as a 21-​yr old female patient, about this place. If you are a woman or you have a female partner whom you care for, don’t bother stepping into this door, They will rip you off. In fact, that’s what a Dr. at Carle remarked to me when I told him this story.
I feel traumatized by her lousy service and inexistent care for patients. She is eccentric, in-​your-​face, childish, and wholly without care of her patients. Her staff also echoes her same attributes. Don’t bother coming here, you’ll regret it!

as if this wasn’t bad enough, I have learned that Women’s Health Practice is charging me for an appointment I never made.
I just checked my phone’s mailbox and realized that they left a message saying they were going *to sign me up* for an appointment, and WITHOUT MY CONSENT they claim I placed it, and are now charging me for it. Yet another excuse for robbing patients of their money!
Suzanne Trupin is abusive, careless and her staff is ignorant and rude. Take it from an unlucky patient.

I came here once and it was a comfortable experience for me. Everyone was nice and they make sure everything goes smoothly for you.
