History

Established in 1991.

In 1991, Brian Tom’s seedling educational center, Cerritos Education Center, consisted of a one-​room homework lab, a used van, and a staff of 5 employees…

Today, the educational services company has transformed to become California Educational Centers Inc., or CEC, now boasting several contracts with school districts, valued community relationships and a staff of more than 30, including credentialed teachers, college graduate and undergraduate students, who reach out year-​round to all students. CEC is proud to receive continued support from the community, through partnerships with institutions like the California Chess Academy, Chick-​Fil-​A, Elephant Bar Restaurant, Network for a Healthy California and Project APPLE.

Business Owner

At the age of 20 (1991), while attending UCLA, Brian Tom founded his first company, California Educational Centers, Inc. One year later, he was diagnosed with the eye disease glaucoma and blindness set in. Although blind, Brian has a clear and limitless vision to educate and inspire others to overcome life’s challenges and achieve their dreams. He is dedicated to serving others and paying forward all the blessings he has received throughout his life. Brian Tom serves as the CEO and Founder of CEC.

Initially my daughter did not want any help but after a few short semi-​private sessions with Christina, (A graduate student in medical school for micro neural biology) we could tell she was doing better. Although in the past she did well on the standardized test– this time she did well enough to be accepted into Whitney. No, we didn’t go to CEC with Whitney as the goal– but by laying a strong foundation and not just «teaching to a test» or doing the homework – she was able to reach her potential. They operate with the idea of having high quality staff– and they have a good heart. They genuinely want your kid to succeed.- not just for profit– but because I think they want to contribute to our community. They are always helping out and doing things for schools with a mission first to serve.

The staff at CEC is unlike any other. They are friendly and professional. Ofie Chanco is a delightful woman who has paired my son with Miss. Indigo Vu as his tutor. Her warm, and friendly personality makes it easy for my son to want to go to tutoring. He states that Ms. Indigo is very patient, and encouraging while teaching new concepts in writing. Since attending CEC in April, he has shown significant growth in writing. Now, he writes with more detail, and is in no hurry to be «done» with his writing assignments. We couldn’t be any happier with CEC!

I have two teenagers in high school with learning disabilities. I needed to find extra help with homework and found CEC the best in the Cerritos area for my special needs boys. Our tutor Indigo helped our kids improve their grades and motivate them to learn more.

We belong to a school district where almost every student is an achiever and academically competative, therefore most parents enroll their kids in after school programs that can assist in achieving academic goals. I am happy to say that I found a gem in California Educational Centers. CEC offers programs that make students reach their potential. Their after school programs motivate the kids to attain excellence.
Ofie Chanco took time to evaluate my son’s needs and recommended the best program that will satisfy our goals. She also partnerned my son with Maria Bolanos, a highly qualified teacher who was able to motivate my son to write better essays, narratives and response to literarure. We love Ofie and Maria!
My son’s writing skill is still a work in progress, but I am confident that after finishing the one-​on-​one program and armed with the techniques he learned from Maria, he will be ready to tackle middle school writing demands and write like a pro… or like George R. R. Martin, may be ;)

Regarding: Ofie Chanco
Few times in life do you get to work with an individual and a company who truly is excited about the end result you get working with them.
We have been very lucky to have an opportunity to meet and work with Ofie Chanco of CEC regarding tutoring of our daughter. Not only has miss Chanco been exceptionally inspiring to our daughter but she has actually made a huge change in our daughters grades and outlook on schoolwork.
Miss Chanco is a person who goes way above and beyond the call of duty each and every day. From the very first words out of her mouth when we met I was instantly excited to be around such an inspired and committed individual as her. She is solely responsible (along with my wife’s tireless efforts of course) for our daughters 180 degree turn around at school. Her grades are now A’s, not C’s and low B’s.
My family and I would not be the same had it not been for our meeting Miss Chanco and working with her diligently.
I would also note that she was a referral from someone else. Sometimes referrals can be good or bad of course. Depending. In this case she was perfect for us. I hope you take this as a referral to you to call her and have your kids work with her. You will not be disappointed. I can promise you that.

I got introduced to CEC by Ofie Chanco and I must say they have one of the best public speaking programs. From being a very shy elementary student, my daughter has grown to be a confident public speaker, thanks to their program. Because of this, she was inspired to take up Model United Nations in high school and has attended numerous conferences, competing with schools all over the United States, the last of which was the Nationals MUN in New York last March. It all started with a friendly but firm handshake from Ofie Chanco and owner Brian Tom. In CEC, they will ensure you child’s success, improve their self confidence or in the case of my daughter, find their passion. They have a variety of programs that will meet your needs, whether to help struggling students, help students with homework or help them get ahead, or prepare them for college. They even have online programs. All the staff are friendly and shows genuine concern with their every student. Ofie always comes up with the best offers to make their programs affordable and matches every kid with the best teachers. Try them out !

Beyond any doubt, this is the best after school program in the area. My son was enrolled in two other programs nearby and after attending these other programs, he’d return with missing work or incorrect solutions. Apparently the teenagers at these other programs were more involved in playing games and hanging out. Once he went to CEC, things took a turn for the better. Ofie is great with the kids and is very nurturing. His tutors Michael and Erick are great! He’s a second grader now and if all goes well I anticipate he’ll be there through high school.
