Rock’n & Jam’n 2

I had a girls date here today for some «rock’n and jam’n» and now I can’t wait to come back. So it had been ten years (man that makes me feel old) since I had last strapped on my harness and hit the walls. It was so awesome to get back at it. The climbs are fun. Seems like they are changed up quite a bit, possibly some more than others but that doesn’t make it a bad thing. Having some music playing is great because it gives you the chance to focus and get in your own zone. Some of the climbs feature an auto belaying system that allows you the opportunity to climb without having to come with a partner. I can’t wait to come back and climb on!

I like the Thornton gym a little more, but the Centennial gym can be less busy and a little more relaxed. The walls are less interesting than the Thornton gym, but they often have very cool stem-​y stuff, routes that you just don’t find often at many gyms and they’re really fun to work up. One thing that I’ve come to appreciate is that the Rockn and Jamn gyms have really good route-​setters. They tend to set on the crimpy side, but are thoughtful and interesting, maybe a little truer to the outdoors than other gyms. They are also a good value — a good bit cheaper than EarthTreks or Movement, although also smaller. The staff is always super nice (shout out to Mike — a really good guy who’s super competent), and they have plenty of lead ropes and a nice slackline in one corner. They also have an active youth program, though sometimes it’s nice to go in the late evening to get away from them! Anyways, very happy that there’s several good climbing options in Denver, and have much love for the Rockn and Jamns — we tend to rotate through the Rockn and Jamn gyms along with EarthTreks with visits to Movement every now and again.

Came here with two little ones a few days ago (a 10 & 8 year old). Mike was really helpful and patient in getting them set up and gave us a thorough beginner’s orientation. There were definitely enough options for a full range of climbing abilities. We had SO much fun — the kids wanted to go back the very next day.
Challenging, fun, and great staff. Would definitely come back next time we’re in Denver.
Pls note: the establishment require kids below 18 to have legal guardian sign a waiver. As the kids’ aunt, I had to call their mom who printed the waiver, signed it and emailed it back. Took a little bit of time but we managed to get it done that way.

It’s hard not to give Rock’n & Jam’n a solid review when they’re the gym I cut my climbing teeth, but I feel it’s merited.
They have a little bit of everything: toprope, lead, bouldering, slackline, and even a rope and some rigging to get your adventurer/​pirate blood boiling. I confess to mostly taking advantage of the toprope/​lead climbing, but I’ve never been disappointed when dabbling in the other offerings.
Holds are changed often and with an eye for variety and challenge. You can tell the setters put their hearts into making their routes; deciphering the bizarre names of each individual route is sometimes as fun as climbing it. The walls themselves also provide a range of challenge and diversity, with dihedrals, arêtes, and roofs (rooves?) you’ll come to love and hate.
I’ve taken two classes here — intermediate and lead climbing — and both went a long way in improving my climbing skills. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about climbing, so don’t hesitate to ask for pointers about a particularly difficult route. Or some curious aspect of climbing. Or how their day has been going. Anything, really — they’re swell people.
There’s also a small workout area nestled up and to the side with weights, pull-​up bars, yoga mats, and other little gym-​ish accouterments to help you push your climbing to the next level.
Alas, no place is perfect. They have a lot of holds that are worn to the point of slickness, leading them to annoy you more than they challenge you. They do some small work to keep the place tidy, but «clean» is not the first word that would come to mind, particularly in the gym area. And finally, the prices are a bit steep, and I’d recommend either waiting for their annual sale on punch passes (20% off around X-​mas) or singing up for a year-​long pass with friends (the more that sign together, the cheaper it gets) if you’re serious about climbing there. Note that any of the passes you get here (punch, yearly, etc) are all good at the other Rock’n & Jam’n location, thus doubling your value if you’re willing to make the drive!
On a final note, if you haven’t been back in a long time, you should give it another try. They’re under new management since about a year ago and are actively working on some of the issues I mentioned above. The old holds, for example, are getting gradually replaced with brand spankin‘ new ones that are almost unfairly grippy. As they continue to improve, I might have to tack on another star.

My son goes with my dad here to climb and the people are usually pretty awesome. They are helpful and always put safety first which for a mom is great to see. They can get pretty busy but I have never been where we had to leave.

I am new to climbing so my review is really aimed at those that are less experienced.
I had emailed the gym and asked to set up a group introductory lesson. The person that answered, Tricia Fehr Carver, was so helpful. She set the whole thing up seamlessly.
Our lesson was taught by Michael (didn’t catch a last name). He was knowledgeable, helpful, and funny.
We were able to «free» climb after the lesson (which is so much harder than everyone there makes it look).
We are now going every Tuesday for a group climb… and yes, we are still very inexperienced but trying.

My kids have been climbing here for 8 years but only recently have there been improvements done. Also my daughter has been doing their climbing team and has gone up almost 2 number grades in onsight ability. The rout setting has gone from good to great. the ratings used to be soft (5.11 everywhere else would be 5.12 at R&J) now seem to be more accurate. Good place to climb if you have to climb inside.

When I moved to Denver I got a year membership to RJ and in general I don’t regret it. There isn’t really a better option in the Denver area if you want to climb roped routes. They have tall walls, but slightly less variety at this location (there are no slab routes). The route setting isn’t bad but I’ve seen better when I lived in Dallas.
Yes there are better options if you want to go to Boulder, but I live in South Denver next to RJ2 so that isn’t a regular option. Thrillseekers doesn’t compare because their walls are so short. If you only boulder the RJs aren’t the greatest and you would be better off going to Denver Bouldering Club. I don’t find RJ2’s bouldering area near as interesting as RJ1’s, but this location tends to be less crowded which is nice. I do think RJ1 is better than RJ2 even though I live right next to RJ2.
I’ve found the staff really friendly at both RJs.
I saw there is a gym opening up in Golden called Earth Treks which might bring some serious competition to the RJ gyms. Until then I would say going to an RJ is your best option.

I went here with my staff for some team building. We did two hours and our experience ranged from someone who was super-​excited to do it again, and a person that thought she would only make it part way. Trisha (or Tricia) was a great teacher. She made sure everyone felt comfortable. And everyone, even those of us who were new or nervous, made it to the top multiple times. We had a lot of fun. I highly recommend this gym. I am hoping my church will let me bring the youth group here.

Nice gym! The walls are super tall. There are three auto-​belay systems, which I love to use. Their bouldering section is meh, but that’s not the reason to go there anyway. I wish there was more of the gym because on a Saturday afternoon it felt super crowded. The crowd conveniently cleared out by 4 though and we got to climb to our heart’s content.

As a kid I was always a huge fan of those transportable rock walls that would set-​up at festivals and fairs around town. Once places like Dick’s started touting them as an in-​store attraction you can bet it was something I made my parents delay there shopping for. Fortunately, Rock’n & Jam’n lets me climb all I want and I don’t even need someone there to help me!
I came here for the first time about six years ago and after a very long hiatus returned last week to monkey around. Since it had been awhile, I had to be retested on how everything works. The staff was really nice and helped me relearn all the knots and precautions you need to know before venturing out on your own. Once I passed, we were set loose and I remembered why I loved this place so much. From bouldering to climbing (I also love the auto-​belay in case your partner gets tired) and ladder to tight rope, there’s no shortage of fun activities.
If you don’t have your own equipment, one visit costs $ 22. A little steep if you aren’t planning on spending a good chunk of time there but if you are planning on going back time and time again, I’d suggest investing in your own harness and shoes to save you 10 bucks.

I’ve been to 5 gyms since I started climbing in January of 2010. This is the best gym I’ve been to so far. The details are what make this place stand apart. Here’s my thirteen reasons why this place «rocks»:
1) The routes are amazing. Routes harder than 5.10 are ranked by the climbers. After a route is newly created, the route setters then let the climbers of the gym rank the climb by voting via a tally’n system. This makes for very accurate route rankings. Additionally, my 5’4″ tall wife didn’t have any height problems with the 5.10’s and 5.11’s we were trying…
2) This gym has great height. This gym is far superior to Thrill Seekers. Thrill Seekers maxes out at about 25 feet (some routes are only 20 feet). This gym has to have at least 35 foot walls.
3) There are GREAT overhanging features which make for some exciting climbing.
4) The have a courtesy phone for peeps too poor to own a cell phone.
5) They have a microwave to cook your lunch (even with napkins and plates! How nice!) — They also have an area specifically for eating…
6) They have a shower in the lockers.
7) The lockers and bathrooms are clean (unlike Thrill Seekers)
8) They have auto-​belays which help if you don’t have a friend to climb with — the auto belays are on tracks, thus allowing you to slide them over to a route that you’d like to climb (instead of being limited to one route).
9) Each area of the gym is individually temperature regulated.
10) The bouldering cave is excellent (of course I’m no pro, I only climb their Rec climbs — V0-​V2)
11) The owner (I only met one of them) is the nicest lady I’ve ever met
12) They have a slackline to help build your core strength.
13) The ropes here are quite new (as opposed to Thrill Seekers)
To put it simply, if you live more on the southern part of Denver, do not go to Thrill Seekers, go to RJ2. This place was created by climbers and proof of that is seen in the small details. My only complaint is the empty space above the bouldering cave. Oh man that’d be awesome if they filled that with more climbing… Oh, and the lack of smearing on their walls. You can smear on the wall, but not as well as some other gyms… That’s it! Now get over there and climb!

Decent climbing facility, friendly staff. I took their one hour beginner climbing class. The instructor is very knowledgeable and friendly. They have membership discount, something you can take advantage of if you go there often. Compare to Thriller Seeker, it’s easier. For a total beginner, I could climb 5.6 or even 5.7 no problem, but at Thriller Seeker (I think it’s more for professional climbers), I even struggle with 5.5. You can also rent gears (harness and shoes) for $ 10.

Pretty good gym, although it feels a bit small during peak times. Fortunately the hours are pretty good (it stays open late, til 11pm on weekdays) so it’s easy to avoid crowds.
They have a bouldering cave with lots of routes that fall into several categories of difficulty level (ie, the easiest is Rec, which is V0-​V2). There are a lot of lead/​top rope routes (I think about 80 routes all together) on pretty tall walls with varying angles.
The cardio/​weights area is small, but has sufficient equipment for working out and training to climb. Particularly useful are the campus boards and finger boards.
A major attraction of this gym is the slack line. It is kind of nice to practice slack lining in a safely padded area. It’s also fun to catch a glimpse of people doing crazy hard gymnastic moves on it.
Overall, RJ2 is a great place to train for climbing. The staff members are always nice and helpful. Other members are friendly and provide beta if I ask for help :)

Having to drive to RJ2 (Rock’n & Jam’n) the one located in Centennial was worth the trip.
1. I met up with more climbers who call RJ2 a place for them to climb indoors.
2. Regular classes are conducted here for beginners, intermediate and advanced level, for those climbers who are interested to increase their capability to climb @ your pace or beyond.
3. Friendly and knowledgable staffs who are willing to show you the «ropes».
4. The «routes» situated in this indoor climbing gym is gnarly.
5. They have a cave if you are interested to do some bouldering moves. This place is quite similar to RJ1 (another climbing gym located in Thornton), with self belay mechanism. It allows solo climbers who do not have any partner to climb with can climb up the routes via this self belay mechanism.
All in all once again, I am indeed awed with the climbing facility both RJ1 & RJ2 offers for the climbing community in Colorado.
Definitely I would return here to climb with my friends. Give it a try if you are in the vicinity of Centennial. Spread the climbing love, y’all! Above anything else, do have FUN!

I’m completely new to rock climbing, but I like this place. I only go into the bouldering cave. They have the routes color-​coded and labeled «Rec», «Intermediate», «Advanced», and «Open’ instead of the V0−12 scale. I found this place very inviting for starting out in bouldering and I’m noticing that there is a regular crowd of locals who are very friendly. I’ve been going during lunch on the weekdays and there’s a decent number of people there but it’s not crowded.
If you’re thinking about trying it, this has been a great place for me to start out.
