Description

Specialties

We’re an occasional shop specializing in vintage and handmade goodies for mamas & munchkins. Find us open on the FIRST Thursday through Saturday of every month.

In addition to items made locally by our shop, we also feature awesome goods from other talented folks across the state of Iowa. You’ll find unique home décor, industrial & architectural salvage, repurposed & painted furniture and more.

Because we’re only open once our month, our inventory is always changing so stop by often. We’ll never look the same month to month!

History

Established in 2014.

What started as gifts for her friends, blossomed into Hatchlings & Hens, which Katie Bjerke has been operating out of her home for the last two years.

While she considered outlets like Etsy for sales revenue, Bjerke felt the same business model could be achieved in a storefront. And after a quick search on Etsy, discovered a wealth of talent in her home state of Iowa. She was convinced there were other talented crafters out there that would be excited about an opportunity to sell their handmade goods in an actual store, where customers could touch and feel the merchandise.

The business became more official in December 2014 when Bjerke was asked to share space with Stew’s — the other half of the shop — in it’s quirky location off Main Street in Cedar Falls. Hatchlings & Hens and Stew’s launched their first occasional sale in February 2015 and the rest is history. The pairing is completely unpredictable and complete polar opposites. It’s a match made in heaven!

Meet the Business Owner

Katie B.

Business Owner

Katie graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2001 with a BA in Communications /Electronic Media and a minor in Journalism. She has eight years of experience as a communications specialist and event planner. In 2009, after the birth of her first son, Katie decided to be a full-time mom and temporarily ended her career in the corporate world.

These days Katie is a stay-at-home mom and moonlights as a self-taught seamstress, crafter and interior designer who hides away in her craft closet. She is addicted to Pintrest, HGTV, all things Martha Stewart and SHOES! Keeping up with her two boys (age three and five) is a full-time job, so Katie finds balance in life by creating little works of love that are inspired by her munchkins and life as a practical mama.
