My printer broke. Way back in the day, I was HP certified to work on Laserjet II’s and even the new Laserjet III’s and IV’s. So I know a little bit about working on computers and printers. Recently, my HP1600 Color Laserjet starting printing some really funky colors. Look on the HP trouble-shooting site– nothing. Do a little Googling and come across the well documented HP Colour LaserJet Fading Fix. Printed the instructions. Well, after looking at all the steps it would take and the little tiny screws and the boards that have to be removed and cables that have to be unplugged and mirrors and lenses that have to be meticulously cleaned, not to mention shutting down the atomic pile and the warp drive and reaching into the dilithium crystal chamber with my bare hand, I decided, «Screw this. Let someone else do it.» Not really comfortable with taking it to Best Buy or Office Depot so I ask the guy who services out computers at work. He doesn’t do ‘em. But he knows a guy who does… Enter Hamilton Business Machines. Started by the old man and now run by the son. Cheerful and friendly. Came by my work and picked up my printer. «I’ll have it back in a couple of days.» Didn’t sneer at me when I gave him the instructions I had printed out. Two days later and it’s back, working great. Cheap, too, when you include the fact that it included pickup and drop off. Good old fashioned S-E-R-V-I-C-E. I like it.
