The Center for Photographic Art is a nonprofit photography gallery that offers contemporary photography exhibitions as well as classes, lectures, special events and members’ programs. We are inspired by the belief that photography is a powerful language for creating, interpreting and expressing meaning. Informed by regional traditions of mentorship, respect for craft and mutual support, we are committed to artistic development, creative inquiry and education.

History

Established in 1992.

The Center for Photographic Art (CPA) was created in 1992 after the renowned Friends of Photography, founded in 1967 by such luminaries as Ansel Adams, Cole Weston, Brett Weston and Morley Baer, moved to San Francisco. Grounded in the regional traditions of California’s Central Coast and the photographers who were attracted to it, the Center for Photographic Art promotes excellence in photography through exhibitions, educational programs and publications.

I stopped by here during a recent trip to Monterey. The space is somewhat hard to find — look for the Sunset Center, and it’s a small building adjacent to there. (They seem to be associated; a lady at the box office had told me parking in the Sunset Center lot was OK.)
The gallery itself is one large room, and when I went it was a juried show of over 100 large-​ish prints — so we’re talking about a space bigger than most Carmel galleries. The show I saw was very nice with a range of work from general appeal to a bit more challenging; other shows there seem to be a bit fluffy.
There were a few people working when i went in — they were retiree age (volunteers, perhaps?) and they were all super friendly and happy. It was generally a nice place to be — a bit off the beaten path from the main Carmel galleries, but worth the trip.
