History

Established in 2009.

Lifelong friends and finance industry veterans Greg Porter and Bret Smalley joined forces to form First Carlsbad Mortgage in 2009. We established the business to help our network of clients, friends, and family navigate the increasingly challenging mortgage process and secure the optimal loans for their unique situations. We founded the company with the goal of offering objective mortgage advice, access to the lowest rates available in the market, and concierge service for our clients from the quote stage, through loan processing, funding, and beyond. We decided to keep overhead minimal, and to process our own loans, in order to minimize costs and optimize service. Since 2009 our business has grown substantially by word of mouth referrals from our satisfied network of clients.

Business Owner

Greg Porter is the Founder and President of First Carlsbad Mortgage. Greg has 21 years of experience as a real estate lender, broker, advisor, and appraiser. Prior to founding First Carlsbad Mortgage, Greg served eleven years as a senior loan originator and underwriter covering the Western States for Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns. Greg has personally originated and underwritten over $ 1.5 billion in real estate loans in over 30 major markets across the country. Prior to working as a lender, Greg served as a senior consultant within Arthur Andersen’s commercial real estate group, and prior to that as a licensed commercial real estate appraiser. Greg holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Real Estate Finance from the University of Southern California. Greg holds current California Real Estate Broker and NMLS licenses. Greg lives in Carlsbad, California with his wife and two daughters.
