Specialties
The Camp Sherman store is a unique general store, in business, continuously, since 1915. The store specializes in «what you forgot». We have groceries, a deli, a fly shop, clothing, camping gear, gas, propane, a rental cabin, and a great variety of cold beer and wines.
Travelers from around the world come to the Metolius River to try their skill at catching the elusive trout in the river which is just feet from the store. Fish for native redband rainbow trout, white fish, brown trout, and what has been called the best population of bull trout in the lower 48 states. We have everything you would need in our fly shop to help you on your quest.
Our sandwiches are constantly praised. «Best sandwich I’ve had in a long time», «great burger», and «why do you put so much meat on the sandwiches» are frequent comments from our well fed customers!
Special events at the store include BBQ’s on the Saturday’s of Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekends. Metolius River Bamboo Rod Fair
History
Established in 1915.
In 1915 Congress passed an act that allowed private citizens to least Forest Service land for recreational opportunities. Farmers from Sherman County had been camping in the Metolius Basin for years at this time. That is actually how Camp Sherman got it’s name. While clearing the road into the basin one Spring in the early 1900’s, the crew decided to put up a sign directing everyone to the correct route. Puzzled with the lack of an «official» name to put on the sign, they decided that «Everyone who came to the area was from Sherman County, and they all camped, so, we’ll just call it Camp Sherman». Since the area had been popular and now that cabins would soon be built, a store was allowed to be built and the rest is history! We are the lucky 13th owners of this fine institution and this past season marked our 14th year.
We celebrated the 90th birthday of the store building two years ago. In 2015, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the business.
Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner
When we got here, my qualifications for running a store were the knowledge of the old mantra «buy low and sell high». I had been in front of cash registers many a time, but never operated one. Luckily, Kathy (my wife) and I were open books and were eager to learn. We soon learned that half the people on the West Coast had an interest in the ownership of the store. Nothing financial, but a passionate interest. We reassured folks that we had no big plans to change anything. Soon we were asking «what would you like to see us carry»? That worked, and we got a lot of great input. Then we asked the various salesmen, «what sells the best»? That worked too. The other part is to carry the best product available, whether it is food, drink, clothes, or flys. The formula seems to be working as the store is filled with happy, laughing, satisfied customers, many of whom we call friends. We are highly seasonal, with Summer being the prime time and Winters being the «Winter Wonderland».
