Specialties
2b design is an award winning design social enterprise which transforms architectural salvage from 18th, 19th and early 20th century destroyed houses from conflict zones into stunning one-of-a-kind home décor creations. Our unique lamps, sconces, candleholders, tables and consoles are made of old wrought iron or precious wood which in a previous life used to be gates, doors, balconies and railings. Our handmade lampshades and pillows are created out of 19th century hand dyed linen from French bridal dowries, vintage Suzani from Central Asia, Chanel fabric remnants or other rare fabrics. We employ disadvantaged and disabled people of diverse backgrounds to promote reconciliation and our flagship brand is called «Beyt» which means house or home in Semitic languages.
In our Cambridge location we focus on turning homeless or marginalized women into world class artisans. Our mission is «to restore the unseen beauty of the broken». We invite you to visit us and discover how our mission is turned into reality!
Meet the Business Owner
Benedicte M.
Business Owner
Benedicte comes from a family whose commitment to serving others goes back many generations. In her early twenties she started traveling the world and devoting time and efforts to help those in need. In India she volunteered with Mother Teresa, in the Philippines she helped exploited street girls come out of marginalization, in Brazil she worked in the slums of Rio. Later on she decided to combine her passion for social work with her design skills: in Tunisia she launched a line of artisan made wrought iron items. Her big project however started in Lebanon after witnessing the disappearance of the country’s architectural heritage and the tremendous challenges faced by the disabled and the disenfranchised. With her husband Raja she decided to start collecting beautiful architectural elements from salvage yards in order to transform them into works of art by employing the unemployable. In October 2012, Beyt, 2b design’s first store and creation workshop opened in Cambridge, MA.
