I used SOS Mold to mitigate mold at our house when we were in the purchase process. They did an excellent job, but they forgot one piece when they did their original estimate — and they made good on what they promised on their nickel. That is my definition of a stand-​up business.
I then called Chuck because I wanted some advice on radon measurement and mitigation. Chuck was more than patient and explained to me best way to go about it and figure out if I need him or someone else. Turned out I was OK, but he demonstrated professionalism and integrity and that’s why I would recommend him.

With just a phone call, we got the information we needed to move forward with the problems we had in our house. We knew the news wasn’t going to be good and Chunk knew immediately from my description what was going on, confirming our fears but, unexpectedly, his first concern was for our living situation and our health and gave us recommedations including NOT having him come out for a full inspection since it was obvious what was going on. That kind of honesty and personal concern is so rare these days that it really blew me away. If we need any documentation or official confimation on this, we’ll be calling him right back. After dealing with many sinus infections, coughs, runny noses etc. from our 3 year old, we decided to have our house inspected for mold. Chuck was prompt, informative and very familiar with our situation having been through constant sicknesses from his own children. He inspected the entire inside and outside of the home. He pointed out all areas of mold and advised that not everything would be considered a hazard to our health. Then he got to the laundry area… our front loader washer was the issue! It was lined with mold on the inside of the washing drum! The washer was removed within minutes! We followed all of Chuck’s instructions. daily vacuuming, opening all windows for natural air flow, tossing all items with stuffing/​batting that have ever been washed in the the front loader, and washing all items that had ever been washed in the front loader on the hottest sanitizing cycle in the new washer (NOT a front loader, btw!). We are approaching 2 months since Chuck was here and we have been free of any kind of sickness! We are so thankful for you, your expertise and your kindness. We already have and will continue to refer you business!

Spoke to Chuck over the phone. What an honest and good natured man! He could have made thousands of dollars off of me like the other Mold Inspection companies were trying to do. Instead he told me the truth, that the leak we had was minor and though there was most definitely mold, a full thorough remediation was unnecessary for such a small area and minor leak. He gave me step by step instructions on how to get the problem fixed without extensive remediation.
Your problem will likely differ from ours (as I overreacted a bit). And when it does, see Chuck. Unlike many people I called today, he was very honest even though he could have made more money by lying.

I always read other Unilocal reviews with a jaundiced eye as you never know who is writing the reviews or their motives. I was in need of a mold inspection for a condo purchase in Santa Barbara asap. I gambled on SOS/​Chuck Colby and it was a great gamble. I live 2 hours away and coordinating remotely has it challenges. Chuck was so great — returned phone calls promptly, communicated well, showed up on time, totally professional and nice. Fortunately the condo had no significant issues but his written report had some good recommendations for improving interior air quality. His price was fair and his report thorough.
