Baths at Roman Spa

We came here as part of a girls weekend — my SIL and I did the mud bath. Now, I had never done a mud bath before so I’ll share some details for other mud newbs, but in short it was a really great experience! We were brought to a room — looked like a typical spa room with two beds in it — to strip down and put on robes & flip flops. Once ready, we left our things in that room and we’re escorted to the bath room — not to be confused with bathroom… although we were offered that as well. :-) In the bath room, there were two tubs full of mud, two one person Jacuzzi tubs and two showers. We were given some pointers on getting into the mud and then left to own devices, with assurances she’d be back with water in a few minutes. The mud is not sulfur smelling as I had expected, not much of a smell at all… but it’s mud… brown, thick, gloopy, oozy mud. When you get in, it’s a little challenging to get sunk in all the way, you have to do some serious wiggling. There are some hot spots as hot mineral water is being pumped in. But after a few minutes, I was successfully submerged. The attendant came back several times, giving us cucumber water and cold compresses, which were VERY welcomed. After approximately 15 minutes I’d guess, we were told that it was time to get out, shower off and get into the Jacuzzi tubs which are full of mineral water. Check! The shower had mineral water flowing from it which IS sulfur smelling, but effective, ESPECIALLY the hand held nozzle — gotta get the mud out of all of the cracks and crevices! The tub is nice, had some essential oils in it and was very relaxing. More water & cold compresses were brought. Then after about 30 minutes I’d guess, we were told it was time to leave the tubs and go cool down in our cool down room — the room where we left our things at the beginning. We laid there for about 15 minutes, with more cucumber water, cold compresses and cucumbers for our eyes. It was a delightful, relaxing, rejuvenating experience. Some things to note that I had questions about: yes, totally naked so if you do the two person experience, make sure that you’re OK with being openly naked in front of that person. You spend most of the time covered, but you are definitely naked and in plain view while getting in and out of the tubs etc. While in the mud, it got hot… this may be an issue for someone with claustrophobia or a sensitivity to being too hot… I do and I alleviated my «discomfort» by occasionally raising my feet or hands out if the warm mud. Dry… you’re going to feel dry after so have plenty of lotion available later and drink lots of water. The one thing that they didn’t provide was some sort of hair conditioner… there was lotion and plenty of water to drink but my hair felt like hay when I left… if I went again, I’d bring a leave in conditioner to put on my hair when I was getting dressed. I read a lot of reviews of various places and some apparently have heating elements IN the mud with you and some have reported being burned by them. This exact thing happened to my SIL, she said that THIS experience at the Roman Spa was far superior. I’d recommend and I’d do it again.

Never did this before and will again. Husband and I loved this place. Was able to enjoy the mud bath for 20 minutes then the mineral bath for 20 minutes then off to see our private room with cold compresses and cucumbers on the eyes. Very relaxing! Thanks Mary for an enjoyable visit.

I had a 50 min deep tissue massage and paid $ 123. It was definitely not worth the money. Not deep at all, and very-​very slow. Apparently, to make it easier for the masseuse. My friend had the same treatment by a different masseuse and was also not impressed with it. Here in the Silicon Valley, for $ 60 or less you can get a much better massage. Also, unlike other Calistoga spas, like Calistoga Spa Hot Springs, this shop will allow you to use their mineral water pools only you spent at least $ 350 in the spa. The next day we went to Calistoga Spa Hot Springs where my friend had a good 30 min Swedish massage. After paying an additional $ 25 we both were given access to their three mineral water pools for 4 hours.

Mud bath was an interesting experience that we loved! It was relaxing followed by the mineral bath. The massage was just good. My husband liked his with Gina. I wish my girl Michelle would have massaged a little harder even after I asked her to. She also spent a lot of time on my feet and legs but no time on my neck so next time I would have specified a little I guess– I just didn’t expect to not have my neck massaged at all. When I flipped onto my back she started at my legs/​feet and I thought she would end in my neck but then the massage was over. It was still relaxing but I’d highly recommend being specific on what you want.

I love this spa a lot, Page, the spa director, has created a warm environment and leads a happy and professional staff. Just enjoyed my second visit so have tried it all. The mud bath and mineral waters are magical. Bruce provided the best massage and energy work I’ve ever had and that’s saying a lot. My still healing torn achilles is stronger and my body is enlivened! Don’t hesitate to visit this healing place

This place was recommended by our hotel for the mud baths, so my boyfriend and I booked a mud bath/​massage couples treatment for the Saturday night we were in Calistoga (booked last minute, btw).
The facilities looked old and dingy from the outside, but everything was clean inside and they had nice robes and bath products (a mint soap that felt great on my skin), cucumber water, calming music… They were making the most of what they had.
The receptionist was friendly and our mud bath attendant, Jewel, was fantastic. She explained everything perfectly (it was our first time and I had some questions) and she was highly professional, slipping in and out with water and cold compresses almost silently, and not intrusive at all. It was incredibly relaxing and the mud felt amazing. My skin felt so good afterwards.
We soaked in the mud for about 15 minutes, then Jewel put cool compresses on our faces and we soaked for another 10 – 15 minuted before showering and then getting in the mineral spa tubs. 20 – 30 minutes in the mud was more than enough time, in fact my boyfriend got out a little early on his own because he was getting too hot. Jewel told us the temp was 104, which was just right for me.
After the mud, shower, tub soak (with more water and cold compresses) and another shower, we were so relaxed and feeling great, the massages seemed unnecessary. But we got them anyway, and both were only mediocre. So one star deducted for that. But the mud bath experience was definitely 5-​stars and I would definitely go back for that.

I purchased a groupon for a massage and mud bath for 2. We arrived an hour early to use the pool and hot tub. The spa was small but clean and comfortable. The grounds of the resort were lovely with lots of plants, palm trees, picnic tables, sitting areas and bbq’s, The indoor area had a bathroom and small sauna and an indoor heated swimming pool with spa jets, so awesome! A heated pool and hot tub were right outside the door.
We returned to the spa for our teatments and were promptly whisked away by our mud technician Sabrina. We settled into the mud for a soothing soak. Just as we started to feel overheated, sabrina came in with cold water and cold towels for our heads. After a shower, we retreated to the mineral bath, Again, just as we started to feel overheated our mind reading therapist arrived with more cold water and towels. So awesome! Next was a relaxing blanket wrap with more cold towels and cool cucumber slices for our eyes.
After the wrap we were taken to the massage room by Michelle and Lori. We told them exactly what we wanted and thats exactly what we got. I told Lori I was a bartender and she paid special attention to my shoulders and feet, I also told her I had a cold and she applied eucalyptus to my chest. A fabulous massage! The groupon was a steal at $ 219 for 2 and we will definetly be returning, If you go, make sure you arrive early to use the pools as you can only use them prior to your treatments, Which is fine because after you will be too spa drunk to function!

I’m gonna throw them the coveted 5 star rating. I’m not a spa kinda guy. Really not a strip down to my jiggly bits and sit in hot mud, but I am now! Not the best place in Calistoga, the atmosphere could use some improving, but for last min reservations and pretty cheap price I loved it.

interesting experience but I probably won’t be going back. I only went for the mud bath treatment and I’m not sure I buy the benefits. my room was much nicer than my friends — there were open windows, fans and essential oils to help with the sulfur smell. overall it was relaxing. the three star rating is because of the customer service. the receptionist was unfriendly, not what you expect when walking into a spa. as I waited in the lobby for my friends to finish their treatments a staff member started openly complaining about clients to the receptionist. the clients may have been in the wrong but I find that highly unprofessional. take it to a private area. also, both of my friends reported the massages to be mediocre. their requests of areas to focus on were ignored.

We had the mud N mineral bath followed by a massage. Sebastian and Amy are so wonderful and gentle with their well placed massages on the feet and palm of hand. We will definitely come back again.

The physical experience was excellent — the mud bath, mineral bath and massage. All felt great on my body. The staff was friendly too. My only knock on the place is the facility itself. It’s generally unattractive inside and out and the smell in the mud and mineral baths area was not pleasant (maybe that’s how all mud baths smell — it was my first one). I don’t regret going but I don’t think I’d go back.

We chose this place for our first private mud bath experience. It is a hidden gem!
We chose the: «mud water massage» choice off the menu. This includes a mud bath, shower to get clean, mineral bath, and a massage for the time of your choice.
We were a little uneasy about trying a mud bath when we came to Calistoga, but wanted to give it a try!
We really appreciated the privacy of the room. It was just for the two of us. You first change out of your clothes into a simple robe. The attendant explains the process to you and then leaves. She gave me a shower cap for my hair. The mud was warm and was hotter as I sunk in. It takes getting used to, but we enjoyed it! We were in there about 20 minutes. Our attendant, Erika, was very friendly and helped us both feel comfortable and relaxed. She always knocked before coming in to help us which was nice. Also, she brought us plenty of water and cold cloths for our foreheads.
Then we showered in two private stalls. Afterward we took a mineral bath. It was a jet tub full of bubbles! The music was calming. There was a fan on as well. Again, we were brought cold cloths for our face and neck. Felt amazing! About half an hour later we went to the relaxing room to lay down with cucumbers on our eyes. I was so soothed that I almost fell asleep!
Our massages: We were expecting to go in together, but I guess there was a misunderstanding, so they were separate. My husband said that his massage was good, but not great. Amy did my massage and was very attentive to my sensitive back. Her voice was calming and she really did a fantastic job! I used the balance essential oil to be added to the massage oil. It smelled great and you get to keep the rest of the bottle. The music was nice. I came out feeling rested and rejuvenated!
Overall, we had a great time. It ended up costing about $ 400. I’ve definitely seen spas that are nicer and fancier, but to me it’s the experience that matters. I loved it! We will definitely return to this spa on our next trip!

The experience was awkward and completely disappointing. The entrance was a faux painted door to a small reception area which was also the waiting area. There was nothing ‘spa’ like about this place. When I was called back to the room for the massage and ‘facial’ as they would refer to it, I was put in a room with another person. No curtain or divider between us. It was a terrible waste of money. I wouldn’t go if it was free. I woke up the next morning with very sore shoulders. The facial did not include any steam, scrubbing, exfoliations, or extractions. I would NEVER go back. There were no robes and the swimming pool is just the resort pool for all guests. Don’t go!

Not terrible, but not the Calistoga experience I am used to. Massage was OK, and their «facial» is just a face massage which I thought was misleading, interior was kinda shady like an old portable they use in schools and it just wasn’t the nice experience I look for when I spend money at a spa.

This was a relaxing way to spend part of our day.

We changed into bathrobes and flipflops and were escorted to the room where there were two mid bath tubs, two showers and two jacuzzi tubs. Relaxing music was playing.
I appreciated having a fan in the room as it was quite warm.
Sabrina was our attendant.
She checked in on us during the mineral bath. She brought us water. Later she brought us seaweed facial scrubs, then a cranberry scrub with loofa. She also brought cold wash clothes throughout.

Cool down:
When we finished the mineral bath we dried off, robed and went to our cool down room. Sabrina put cucumbers and a cool cloth over our eyes. We rested for a few minutes.
Massage:
Mark and Gina came to get us for our massage a few minutes later. We were in a room with two massage tables. We had great massages. They were both very attentive and expert at what they were doing. We left feeling quite refreshed.

For starters I’m a local here in Calistoga so I am familiar with the spa environment & the mud baths & I always find myself coming back to Roman Spa for treatments. I think this place is amazing! Very clean & the staff is extremely friendly & caring. Massage therapists there are very knowledgable & helpful & the front desk always welcomes me with a warm smile as well.
From all the times I’ve been here their staff have always gone the extra mile to make sure I am comfortable & have accommodated me & all my special requests. Their prices are very good & they have specials going on every Tuesday & Friday for the spa making it possible for me to treat my friends & family on occasion! Overall it is a super cute, intimate, clean & nourishing place!

This is far and away our favorite place to go for our annual winter holiday mud bath-​and-​massage retreat. Calistoga itself is a small and charming town, which has unfortunately become a little precious in recent years, with the old local shops displaced by upscale wine tasting rooms, but the mud baths remain a unique local attraction. There are only two places that offer coed couples the opportunity for this unusual, back-​to-​the-​earth primal immersion together: the Baths at Roman Spa and Golden Haven Hot Springs. All the others, including Indian Springs, are same-​sex only facilities. Of these two, we have come to prefer, and wholeheartedly recommend, the Baths at Roman Spa.
For many years we went to Golden Haven – it was easy, had an appealing, Zap Comix-​like humor in the paintings in the waiting room, an adjacent heated indoor mineral pool, and the room rates were more affordable than at the Roman Spa Resort. But we gradually began to notice feeling like cattle being shuttled through the mud bath process: what was supposed to be a once-​a-​year luxurious indulgence turned into a pressurized environment, where we, the guests, were being asked to move on to the next room, and stage of the process, before we were ready. Not so relaxing after all!
About five years ago, we stopped going to – and staying at – Golden Haven and returned to the Baths at Roman Spa instead, which by then was under new management. And what a difference it made: a sensitive environment, geared to optimizing their guests’ experience. Enough time in the warm glove of the mud to relax fully in this other worldly (yet firmly terrestrial) nurturing sensation, followed by enough time in the soothing (and bubble-​filled) mineral baths with the option of jacuzzi jets at hand; then time to cool out in the twilight of the blanket wrap room before your massage. Highly recommended. We will come here again and again.

P. S. If you are sensitive to price, there is no need to stay at the adjacent Roman Spa Resort, which we find a bit expensive. There are many more reasonable places to stay in town, including our most recent find, EuroSpa & Inn. Save your money for a good dinner at All Seasons Bistro instead!

Enjoyed my third visit to the Spa. The mud, mineral water and massage were fantastic. I left feeling relaxed and ready to enjoy the rest of the day. The facilities were very clean, considering mud is their business.
As I stated before, it’s mud. From the ground. Mixed with geothermal water that smells like sulfur. If you can deal with it, you will LOVE this place. Set your expectations to old school, salt (mud?) of the earth, humans have been experiencing for thousands of years kind of expectations. Then… DIVE IN! Naked. And enjoy.

Not good. The «spa» image that they project on their web site does not hold up. It is housed in a VERY old and run down hotel. They’ve tried to spruce it up and paint over the problem, but there is very little «spa-​like» about the place, other than the cucumber water and high prices. Cracked asphalt floor in the tub room, exposed pipes along the walls, loud ventilation fan, Whirlpool tubs from the 80’s. The mud was barely warm. The staff was friendly in tone, but didn’t feel terribly welcoming or warm. There was a feeling of being pushed through the experience throughout.
We were provided with «sandals» (cheap flip-​flops that were three sizes too small), and the towels offered were not fit for Motel 6. Small and rough as sandpaper. Not «spa towels» in any sense of the word.
It is conceivable that the run-​down motel could be made to seem quaint and historic, but even if they had bothered to take that approach, there is no excuse for providing crappy towels and footwear, cool mud in the mudbath and noisy, unpleasant bathing area. Not at these prices.

My wife and I love this place! Such a relaxing way to spend a day or weekend! The mud baths were so amazing! We were side by side and do relaxed! My wife has rheumatoid arthritis and I have never seen her so relaxed!
I can’t wait to go back! I want to and recommend spending the night at the adjacent hotel! We were so relaxed after the mud bath and jet bath, that driving home wasn’t so much fun!
