SoYo Frozen Yogurt

I love frozen yogurt and have had it a bunch of different places but we were given free samples and it tasted like soured milk it was really bad. I would not recommend this place at all. I hope you have better luck than we did.

Ate dinner over here and happen to sit next to this frozen yogurt smoothie place. It was really good. They had some unique flavors and it’s really refreshing to eat while walking around. They have a few tables next to i you can sit at as well

SoYo is amazing! I have been going to the Pine St. location since it opened. I really think that Soyo has the best froyo there is. I moved to SF 6 months ago, supposedly froyo mecca, and I still can’t find any that’s as good. It’s very creamy and it’s not icy. They don’t have any overly sweet flavors. They make the yogurt with all natural, locally sourced ingredients with the real stuff, awesome Vermont organic dairy. When it melts it’s not watery or powdery like other yogurt shops… It’s, well, yogurt. I always love the original tart flavor but all of the fruit flavors are excellent as well, and even flavors that would normally be too sweet and more like ice cream, like chocolate (made with my fave, lake Champlain chocolate), are still very yogurty and perfect. Soyo is one of the things I miss most about Burlington. Also, the people there are nice! :) I am so happy they opened downtown as well. More yogurt!

I went into Soyo with high expectations due to Unilocal telling me that it’s better than Orange Leaf downtown. There are pros and cons to this place though.
The pros:
–Parking is very convenient as they have their own lot in the back
–Right next to Zero Gravity Brewery
–Kiddie size is offered (yay!)
–Rotating flavors that provide variety every time you go
The cons:
–More expensive than Orange Leaf
–Less flavors to choose from than Orange Leaf
–You can’t put on your own toppings and they charge extra
–Charge by cup size instead of weight
I enjoyed the experience. The atmosphere at Soyo is very different than the lively atmosphere downtown of Orange Leaf. A suggestion would be to sit at the outdoor patio of Zero Brew Gravity which is a much nicer scene. The inside of Soyo is very small and so is the outdoor space. I don’t necessarily think this place is better than Orange Leaf. It really depends on what you like in terms of atmosphere and how you get your froyo. I do give this place props for being more convenient in parking, which can be a pain downtown.

I didn’t even know they existed. I went for a mile walk from my house with my toddler. It was a Sunday and they were closed :(boo. They are open until 9 pm throughout the week. Just a suggestion, close at 8 every night and then you can be open on Sundays too.
So anyhoo I walked down with my toddler on a day that they are open. It is very clean and bright, small space. I went in with my child. There was one young girl working. She was not pleasant. She was not busy. She was mean mugging me. There was no friendly greeting or an acknowledgement like «welcome» «come on in» She ignored my child. She barely said 4 words to me, except to take my money. I didn’t even want to sit in there and eat my yogurt.
I like that they make their flavors, all 4 of them.
I got an extremely expensive milkshake. They are definitely over priced. Use less fresh fruit for topping and charge less for the products. The flavors are bland and not very flavorful, especially for the price.
I support local businesses and I would go there again, but I would not go back in if I say the same employee. I would go there and spend $ 5 on a bland milkshake as opposed to going to the gas station across the street and getting a slushy for $ 1 because I support local businesses. But not if someone is going to be rude and impatient when they aren’t even busy or working.
I would not suggest SOYO to my friends or family. But if some Richie rich from Canada or out of stater asked I would send their money there as they probably won’t be returning there anyway.

This is hands down the best frozen yogurt on the planet. Local ingredients and creative flavors! Please open a store in North Carolina so I can have this everyday.

This place sells heaven in a cup! There is nothing like them. I prefer the sharp tanginess of plain yogurt, finding the candy-​like sweetness of most flavored yogurts much too much. Well, this is the frozen equivalent of buying plain yogurt and sweetening at home. This most recent trip I got half chocolate and half strawberry rhubarb with salted caramel chocolate candies. It was absolute perfection. It’s probably good for me and my wallet that I don’t live closer. The staff are delightful, too.

My favorite! Small batch, fresh toppings and great service… what’s not to like! I’ve been here more times than I care to admit and cycle to burn it all off! :-)

There’s a lot of downsides to an interminable winter season, one of which is SoYo’s winter break. I totally appreciate that the frozen dessert biz takes a big hit during the protracted period of subzero temps known around here as ski season, so I don’t fault them for closing up shop for January and February, but we so miss them in the off season. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, so I was indeed jazzed to reunite with my favorite Pine Street treat on Monday, puffy coat and all.
What makes me a regular at the hot pink walled froyo spot that confuses out of towners and locals alike with its quirky name? It’s the three P’s they’re rocking. Product, people, placement. The tangy frozen treat is unbeatable in the refreshing realm, with a light enough body to balance out the many sweet toppings on offer (try as I might to branch out, except for that one time I got experimental on the mochi, I tend to gravitate toward the brownies, nuts, and Reese’s pieces). Flavors rotate regularly, and none come across as artificial. If anything, those more accustomed to a highly saccharine chain froyo experience might find the flavors lacking. I, however, appreciate the subtlety of fruit flavors tasting fruity, not chemically infused. Sample them all, if you can’t decide on the menu names alone. They’ll also let you go halfsies with two flavors. And unlimited chocolate sauce and honey ensure you’ve got something sweet to cut the tart yogurt after you’ve scarfed all the toppings.
The people behind the counter are great. Friendly, knowledgable, and willing to wear a tee shirt in March. Tip them if you appreciate genuine service.
Placement– really I’m talking location. While it may be a downside for some who want to foot it from downtown, I find it’s quiet pine street address a plus. You avoid the long lines of the lakeside creemee joints, can bank on a (free) parking spot, and it’s got plenty of indoor seating for when your craving strikes before it’s warm enough to take things outside. When it is, there’s a picnic table out front and a funky (but not super functional — it’s a slippery seat) bench made from snowboards as well as a little grassy bank to park yourself while enjoying one fine local treat.
Go there when you’ve had a bad day or a rad day. That trusty wooden spoon will cure what ails ya or pump up the jams. Fan for life!

It’s tough to remember that there is dessert beyond Ben & Jerry’s. Let SoYo remind you!
The variety of toppings can be a bit overwhelming, but the staff are awesome, patient young people. The flavors change frequently. I just love this place. I often get dinner at New World Tortilla (next door) then pop on to SoYo for 10% off with my New World receipt.
They also pack a few different flavors in pints for $ 5… which I will consider in the future as two smalls with two toppings comes to over $ 10. A bit pricy, but given that this is a local business that is locally sourced, you can feel good about every dime you spend here. Plus they have a loyalty program that will get you future frozen freebies.
Nice little business… do them a favor and keep it going!

I have an ice cream problem, which has only been exacerbated by living in Ben & Jerry’s country. SoYo helps save me from myself.
They always have Original, which is delightful, and three other flavors that rotate weekly. I regularly check to see what’s on for the week and plot swinging by on my drive home. Favorites are Nutella, Mocha and Key Lime Pie. I love how dedicated they are to being as local as possible, from the ingredients they put in the yogurt, to the toppings (which includes, everything from sprinkles and graham crackers to donuts) and fresh fruit.
Keep an eye on what packed pints are available when you go in and snag one for at home!

I come here at least weekly. I love all the flavors and healthy fruit toppings. Love that they don’t add sugar and a bunch of junk to their yogurt, and you can taste it. Always friendly staff. Parking is a pain, so walk! Cassis and Nutella are my favorites!

If I go for frozen yogurt in Burlington, I go to Soyo.
(This review has been slightly edited from the first time I wrote it because I gave some inaccurate information. Soyo’s owner commented on my review (see below) and I’m updating my info so that it more accurately reflects reality).
Soyo is a locally owned frozen yogurt shop that (as much as possible) uses local ingredients to flavor its frozen yogurt or as toppings that can be sprinkled on the top of their frozen yogurt.
Soyo features four flavors each week. They are often dictated by which fruits are in season (for example, when it’s blueberry season locally, Soyo will feature blueberry yogurt that uses local VT blueberries as one of its four flavors and will also offer fresh local blueberries as a topping). Plain is always one of the four options.
Soyo uses real plain yogurt in its base. They get tubs of yogurt fresh every week from Kingdom Creamery in East Hardwick, VT. Kingdom Creamery also provides their custom-​made milk and sugar base fresh each week. All of Soyo’s flavors contain that custom nonfat milk/​sugar mix, real nonfat plain yogurt, and some emulsifiers that allow that fresh mixture to maintain its consistency in the freezing process. Without them, the yogurt would freeze solid in the machines. Unlike most chains, with SoYo, you know your frozen yogurt was made fresh in shop using 100% Vermont dairy, real ingredients and no artificial flavors.
I choose to go to Soyo over the chain frozen yogurt place that moved onto College street last year (Orange Blossom) but to be fair, from what I can tell, the two brands of frozen yogurt contain roughly the same nutrition profile. Orange Blossom features well over a dozen flavors and you can serve yourself, whereas Soyo offers its four more-​locally-​geared flavors and a server serves you. Both places offer a wide variety of toppings, though I doubt Orange Blossom’s are local).
I do think the Soyo flavors taste better than its competition, plus it’s local, plus by having a server serve me, I tend not to over do it and walk out with a gallon of frozen yogurt ;)
People often choose frozen yogurt as a dessert because they think its much healthier than other dessert options, when in actuality it’s not really. Generally, frozen yogurt contains little to no fat and for some reason people tend to think that’s better for them than ice cream or other desserts, but time and again studies have shown that full-​fat dairy products (or at the very least low fat) are more fully absorbed into the body, giving the eater the most nutritional benefit. Not all fat is bad for you.
I do like the fact that Soyo’s plain flavor has about twice the protein of its other flavors.
In general, if I’m going to eat a sugary treat, I’ve always craved high fat ones. They generally have more protein to balance out the sugar absorption into my system, leaving me with more energy. Additionally, high fat desserts tend to have more nutritional value than low fat ones (not always, but often).
So, I do sometimes go to Soyo when I’m craving it. But I always have a junior or a small size and remember that I’m essentially eating sugar, so try to balance it with a healthy meal before or after.
Buying local is important, and I like that Soyo uses local ingredients when possible, but what I’d really prefer is that they use regular full-​fat and low-​fat yogurt so that I could get some real nutrition in my frozen yogurt, protein, calcium, etc.

LOVE Soyo! Perfect addition to a town filled with high fat, super sugary ice cream. I love the slight tang that their frozen yogurt has, the variable flavors, and the abundance of toppings. A little pricey, but you get quality without the guilt. My favorite has been the mango yogurt with coconut topping and mochi topping. Yum! Can’t wait to try the fall flavors (they suggest apple froyo with cinnamon toast crunch topping to make an «apple pie»). Delish!

In the mood for froyo and found this gem on Unilocal.I was a bit stunned because I expected it to be a self serve froyo place since I’ve been so use to it, but it is NOT.
I got a medium with 2 toppings which costs ~$ 6.50. It’s pricy but expected. Medium is a pretty big size for just me, may recommend a small instead. I chose the original tart flavor which tastes pretty good. The thing i like about self serve is you can use as many toppings and yogurt your heart desires. I felt like I had alot of yogurt (good) but not enough toppings (bad).
There’s a parking lot in the back and they do have a back door that leads to the front. The long hallway has plenty of bathrooms. The parking lot especially at night is pretttyyyy creepy. So try not to go there by yourself. The location for this place is really far from church st Burlington (30 min walk, 6 min drive). We actually passed this place twice because the sign is pretty small and there’s nothing really around the area.
It’s my first froyo place in VT and it tastes really good but I don’t think I would drive out of my way since its the middle of nowhere, unless I’m around.

The yogurt tastes excellent. You won’t be disappointed, as it’s made with very good ingredients — many locally produced. There’s a nice selection of fresh fruit toppings too. I’ve been here 15 – 20 times, and would recommend it to anybody.
The only curve ball is that the to-​go spoons are made out of wood, which some people may not like.
Other than that, I can all but guarantee you’ll like the yogurt.

I’m usually the type that will always skip the froyo for «real» ice cream, but I find myself returning to SoYo again and again. I like that they cycle flavors constantly and their toppings are diverse and unique.

So Yo is a great addition tucked away on Pine Street in South Burlington. The location is great, right next to New World Tortilla. Parking can be a bit of a pain, if you’re not lucky enough to get one of the two or three spots right in front of the building. There’s plenty of parking in the back, but the lane is only wide enough really for one car. I’ve seen two cars squeeze by each other back there, but it’s a tight fit. That’s not the establishment’s fault though.
Onto the yogurt. It’s very creamy, but light and tangy. I’ve been back several times for the rotating flavors (They’ve had their original – a mild and lightly sweet yogurt flavor and several others). Today I had the Lake Champlain chocolate flavor which was so far my favorite. However, I’m intrigued by the maple flavor, which may give me an excuse to go tomorrow. However the original is a very solid flavor and will go nicely with any of the toppings.
The ingredients are often locally sourced, and the portions are rather generous. The price really is quite good I think, for what you get. If you go with a friend, you can each order one or two toppings and then take a spoonful from each other so that you have double the toppings if you wish, although it seems any more than three toppings is a set price. The fruits are fresh – you often will see them cutting them as you eat your yogurt. The brownies and mochi are chewy and delicious. There are a variety of other toppings as well, but I haven’t ventured far from my fruit+mochi or brownie option.
The service has been quite good every time I have gone in there. The counter person has been friendly and smiling and happy to offer a small sample of a new flavor of yogurt – so if you can’t decide just ask for a sample! The portions are quite large, especially as the yogurt is dense. A small is almost too much for me, and I vary between getting a kids sized or a small depending on how hungry I am. Overall – this is one of the places I’ll miss a lot when I leave Burlington.

LOVE SoYo. Though I have now tried some of the flavors, the plain is perfect. If you are a fan of Pinkberry — this is just as good, and perhaps even better. Locally sourced ingredients are a big plus.
The only drawback is the wooden spoon when you take your SoYo to go. It leaves a bad mouthfeel. They should consider using a paperboard spoon which would make for a much better experience — AND is consumer compostable.

Agh! So good! Burlington really needed a frozen yogurt place and SoYo does not disappoint. The frozen yogurt– I’m stuck on the original flavor because I like it so much– is fresh, locally sourced, and delicious. Besides the original frozen yogurt flavor (NOT to be confused with vanilla), they have also offered summer berry and Vermont Maple, both of which have gotten rave reviews. Rumor has it that they are going to team up with Speeder’s down the road to create a mocha FroYo sometime soon. Yummmmmm! Toppings are plentiful and range from strawberries to toasted coconut or oreo crumbles. And if you want chocolate sauce or honey, you can help yourself to as much as you want– for free!
The only downside? SoYo is a trek from downtown– about a 30 minute walk down Pine Street. Luckily, they’re right next to New World Tortilla… looks like the Thai Chicken Wrap just met its perfect dessert…
