I called the organization this morning simply to clarify the identity of 2 dogs I adopted from a hoarder to which they had transferred the dogs. the paperwork from PHS did not match the paperwork from the other «rescue» I was very curtly and rudely told that I could not get any information from them and must contact the rescue from which I adopted. I was given no chance to explain that I did not trust the person from whom I adopted, Beagles and Buddies. She has, currently, 134 dogs in a crumbling desert shelter. As a former rescuer I was appalled at the conditions and lack of organization. Not listening to why I was requesting the information was rude, irresponsible and could be detrimental to the health of my dogs. I am livid with my rescue experience in CA. Honesty and customer service do not seem to be required.

This is A beautiful site with lots of volunteer help.
One floor for dogs, over for cats, one for injured animals. Highly recommend this shelter.
Everyone here seems very into animals… site is clean. Real treat!

I am so grateful for PHS for bringing such a perfect little pup into my life! We adopted Percy about a month ago, who came to PHS severely matted with 2 bad ear infections. He seemed like the happiest, healthiest dog when we met him, so PHS really does an amazing job rehabilitating animals who are victims of neglect. Anika was very helpful with the adoption process and didn’t make us feel rushed to make a decision when we were first meeting Percy. The facility is beautiful. After spending several weekends meeting dogs, PHS looked clean and the dogs always looked very happy and well taken care of.
We signed up for the 6 week training class for small dogs and we loved our first class! Our trainer Lisa is very knowledgeable and patient.
We have been so impressed with all the services that PHS provides and we are constantly recommending this amazing shelter to anyone we know who is looking for a new furry family member =)

The workers are very helpful and you can tell they really care and love animals.
They have all kinds of reptiles here along with cats, dogs and rodents.
I saw three of the coolest looking guinea pigs here.
I am definitely gonna place on getting a guinea pig here .
I can’t wait to rub him or her on my face and show them love because if ya know me ya know I loooove guinea pigs.
They have some interesting and cool looking birds here too.

Penninsula humane is AMAZING! They help so many animals in need. They have come up with their Spay/​Neuter van to alter animals in rural Red Bluff. We have so many low income folks and no affordable spay/​neuter. We have such a huge over pet population here. Very small county with very limited funds. THANK YOU from all the citizens from Tehama county. You guys truly care about animals and not just in your community. We appreciate your help and generosity. Animal angels! Please donate to this organization, they do a lot for homeless pets!

this is a pretty impressive shelter
its a no-​kill facility that was I believe was funded by a couple that really loved pets
I know there is a walkway and wall that lists other donors too
there are quite a few volunteers taking care of the animals, actually taking them out for walks down the street and also in their indoor play area! the indoor play area is actually quite large, allowing for dogs to exercise if weather outside is bad
the dogs are kept in small rooms for viewing, each having blankets and most have a nice piece of furniture (arm chair)…dogs actually look content here
really makes it nice to see the love and care the staff provides here
also nice to know that the animals here are not subject to being put down if not adopted
2^nd floor houses cats (YUCK) and other critters (snakes, lizards, etc)
even if you don’t find a pet to adopt here, leave em a small donation, they really deserve it!

I just really love this spca’s environment. It’s filled with so much warmth and love and hope for all its animals. They also have some very nice puppy play and training classes that we attended with our pup Zeppelin. They were very kind and informative for training our pup and we hope to return soon!

Brought two squirrely guys in. They lost their mommy! But I am happy to know they are at such a clean and beautiful facility and will be kept together then released back in MY neighborhood! So awesome! Thanks guys! :)

Just spoke to this company today… So sad, I visited a probate home for sale and a kitty was there left per the neighbors by the previous owners. I do not live in the area, but may have to go back and cage home and bring him to them!
Because he was not in harm or danger they would not send out a rescue to pick him up. He was so sweet and loving…
I assume like a person if you need help and your not causing a problem, no one with help! Sad

I absolutely love this Humane Society — it’s such a clean and friendly environment! I’ve always wanted a cat, but my fiancé at the time and I were so busy preparing for a wedding and to move in together that we couldn’t adopt right away. But of course that couldn’t stop be from visiting to interact with the kittens. The staff was so accommodating even though we said we weren’t there to adopt that day. I’m not sure if she noticed, but one woman helped me on two separate occasions and was kind and still took the time to educate me.
Finally after we got married and settled down, my husband and I decided to just jump the gun and adopt a kitten! We’re so happy that this Humane Society was close because each staff member was so nice and insightful on cat behavior and training.
It’s been about a month and a half since we adopted our kitten Pluto (formerly Cecil) and we’re so glad we did! He had been a stray and was incredibly shy, but warmed up in a very short time!

I am giving the PHS one star because the facility has not been taking many of these Unilocal complaints into account.
Several other people on this site have commented that the staff here is very rude. I completely agree; not only were staff members rude to me when I was volunteering, but they were rude to me even when I was trying to adopt an animal a few days ago. The staff members at the front desk were reluctant to help me when I requested to meet with the dog I was interested in adopting, and they appeared to be annoyed that I came to them with my questions! How could they be mad at me for asking them to do their job and help me with an adoption? I ended up not meeting the dog, and I adopted from another organization.
The staff at PHS may love animals, but some of them certainly cannot work well with people. And, as far as I can tell from my three years of visiting and volunteering with this shelter, many of the rude staff members have not improved their attitudes.
Yes, the animals are in good health and in good condition, but the staff is so unfriendly that I would not recommend coming here.

My husband and I were very impressed by the conditions here. The cats and dogs were all kept in rooms with each other. There were little couches and chairs and windowsills to climb around on. If you want to meet an animal, they’ll take you to an empty room or a grassy little play area.
The documentation on each animals seems to be very well done as well. Each time the pet is taken out to be played with, the worker writes down their experience and adds it to the collection.
The adoption process is very quick and there is a shop on the first floor where you can buy the food, litter, collars and other basic necessities you may need on your first day of fur-​parenthood.
Thanks to the helpful staff here, our family just grew by four furry feet.

I am so happy to have adopted Jason yesterday. I wanted another dog but he was taken and I was very disappointed, but the staff at PHS recommended me another dog who they thought would be suitable for me & my family. I am so grateful that they recommended me this wonderful boy. He is just the sweetest and most adorable dog ever. So, thank you PHS!

Many situations, feelings and hopes send people to the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS). For my 83-​year old mom, her four recent visits to PHS were driven by deep emotions. She had long loved her dog Mimi, a prior PHS adoption success story, but had recently had to put Mimi down after a long illness. My mom cried as she asked her family, «I’m 83 now… is it too late to love another dog? But if I don’t, can I spend the rest of my life without a loving dog as my companion?»
Her pain and confusion were pretty evident to the compassionate adoption counselors at PHS. I said a silent «thank you» each time I visited the facility with my mother and observed how the PHS staff kindly and patiently listened to my mom — her sadness, her questions, her ambivalence. Each visit, they offered just the right balance of support, information and empathy. They constantly assured her that the decision was hers and that they were there to help her with this journey when she was ready.
My mom came back several times to see if she could form a connection with one particular dog. The staff patiently sat in the Get Acquainted room with us, easing my mom slowly through the process. She didn’t just have many questions (all of which were answered patiently). She also had a need to talk — about her beloved former dogs, the pain of the loss, and all the «should I/shouldn’t I?» deliberations she was concerned about. Step by step, the staff worked with her, never impatient, always supportive. The encouraged her not to feel guilty if that first dog was just not a match.
The outcome? Mom visited the first dog three times, growing more conflicted about what to do. Then she was introduced to another sweet mutt and it was kismet! I was thrilled as I watched my Mom holding and rocking Lucy like they had been friends for years!
As a daughter, I was pretty fixated on my mom’s beaming face, but I also noticed something else: all the PHS counselors who had interacted with my mom were so genuinely excited for both of them that… well, it was just a pure moment of joy.
How’s it going now?
Mom and Lucy have connected so fast these past two weeks, learning each other’s personalities and life paces. Turns out they like to walk and nap at the same time, they both love cuddling, and they are both Giants fans (well, Lucy watches all the games with mom anyway).
In this doggie adoption heaven sent, we recognize we have many wonderful earth-​bound PHS staff to thank: Dan, the Customer Service Director. The kind greeters, front desk workers and gift shop staff who always chatted with my mom about her experiences. And the awesome adoption counselors — Elise, Serena, and especially Lauren — for your guidance, insights and compassion with my mom.
Our whole family feels that PHS is a beautiful facility. My sister just had a great experience with PHS adopting two bonded kittens; my brother has adopted a dog with you as well. And I certainly know where I’m going when our family is ready to adopt! We choose PHS because you do so many things right by the animals you care for and the clients you work with. We appreciate your guidance in explaining each animal’s history, behavioral profile and current needs. We respect that you are working thoughtfully to achieve the most promising matches that are good-​for-​humans-​and-​animals alike. But most of all, we appreciate how compassionately you helped our mom both times she lost a dog, and wondered what to do next. As she said the other day, «little Lucy is so sweet, and helping me to smile again.»

I was one of the few people there and still was never asked if I needed help or really even acknowledged.
Clean facility, super cute animals. It’s kitten season!!! I wish I could adopt them all! Lol.

Here is a beautiful animal shelter that has three floors of pets for you to view. First floor is dogs, second floor is small animals, and third floor is cats.
The facility is quite nice, and they do not keep most of the animals in small cages. I did see some cats in cages but maybe it’s due to the cats not liking other cats (or they are FIV+) — I wasn’t sure about that. For the most part, the dogs and cats are in these nice big rooms, although sometimes there are multiple pets in each room. I never got the feeling that it was too cramped though.
There are these small peepholes that you can put your fingers through for the dog rooms and they often come up to say hello. They are so cute.
The volunteers were tending to the pets very well. The pets looked well nourished and got a lot of attention.
I already have a cat, otherwise I would totally get another one, but if you’re looking for a furry friend (or even the non furry friends), I would recommending stopping by this shelter.

My wife and I decided to adopt a cat, so we visited PHS on Thursday to meet a few. The staff and volunteers at PHS could not have been nicer or more accommodating, they gave us information on every cat we met, and allowed us plenty of alone time with each. We narrowed our choices down to a few. This morning, we arrived at opening time, along with our adult daughters, to meet the finalists. Again, the staff and volunteers at PHS were great, and I think we made an awesome choice! It makes us feel good to know that our new cat comes from such a clean, modern facility, where he was obviously loved and cared for. I wish everyone we do business with treated us as well as PHS did.

We have been searching for a new cat for awhile and finally we found a great guy!
We met with many cats at the shelter and the volunteers were very nice and helpful.
We were able to adopt an awesome cat and I appreciated the care that all of the available cats seemed to be receiving.
They were all happy and relaxed and we looked at the dogs and small animals for fun and they all looked well taken care of as well .

I love my dogs. I have a female Yellow Lab and a Bichon Frise. My lab, Maxie, is now 8 years old and is your typical lab. She’s friendly, curious, happy, energetic and always hungry; which always gets her into trouble.
She has a penchant for escaping, too. We have a big backyard and we let her out there to conduct her business. Problem is we have an In-​Law neighbor that lives in our garage and sometimes they leave the front gate open, which Maxie uses to escape. Even though there’s a four foot fence that we placed in-​between the front gate, she’ll just jump over that fence.
She’s probably managed to escape more than a dozen time and either she always return or we find her wandering in the neighborhood. She does have a collar and tag, but in one particular night, I let her out to do her business as usual and went upstairs to brush my teeth. I went to bed assuming that she was back inside. When Wifey asked me her location, I had a sinking feeling that she had escaped again. Sure enough, our In-​Law neighbors downstairs had visitors and they probably left the gate open.
This time was different as we were looking for her until close to 2:00 in the morning. I put on my hiking boots complete with flashlight and hiking sticks to search our hilly and wooded backyard to no avail. We grabbed separate cars going into different directions and nothing. I drove further down from neighborhood and went from street to street with my flashlight until I spotted (or he spotted me) a Broadmoor Police Car. He immediately asked if I was looking for a dog. Apparently, he had come across a lab earlier and all he did was opened his back door and she went right in. I followed him to the Police Station and sure enough, she was just chilling in the backseat of the squad car without a care in the world.
What a relief that was. The Officer asked if she had a chip and I replied that we had been planning on it. If he hadn’t seen me, the next step was to transfer her to the SPCA for pickup since there was no way to identify her. We decided right there and then to attach a chip unto her. AND… to remind our In-​Law neighbors to keep the front gate closed.
The next day, we took Maxie here for her chip implant. This is a new location and it’s a brand new facility. With the help of former Congressman Tom Lantos and generous donations from Larry Ellison and other Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs and Millionaires, this is one state-​of-​the-​art facility. The staff is friendly with and endless stream of friendly volunteers, it seems. They were informative, caring and efficient. They took Maxie in the back and was done within seconds.
It’s good to know that there are so many services and resources at our fingertips that are easily accessible for us animal lovers.
I can’t thank them enough.

They say that our pets choose us. And this was without question the case with our newest member of the family-​Nima.
This is one awesome adoption facility. The staff is well trained and genuinely care about their residents. They know their cats dogs like they are their own and are experts at pairing up potential family members.
We came in on a Sunday afternoon and spent some quality time with «Nima». We were given a private room where we able to bond and learn more about her and all her weird habits. The key word being «weird’, we knew she would fit right in at home.
The final adoption process was a breeze, and we were given a complete history of Nima’s past right down to what her favorite food is.
It’s been 2 ½ months since we brought Nima home, and each day she bring us more joy around our house.
