Business Owner

Dr. Howard E. Stein is a board certified optometrist who is DPA and TPA licensed to use diagnostic and therapeutic medications. Dr. Stein graduated from Southern California College of Optometry in 1959. He Is a member of the South Bay Optometric Society, the Califoria Optometric Society, the American Optometric Association, and the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association. Dr. Stein was chosen as a Centennial Honoree by the Southern California College of Optometry. This honor was conferred upon 100 of the optometrists who contributed to the field of Optometry and Southern California College of Optometry between the years 1904 – 2004. Dr. Stein is a benefactor for the Stein Contact Lens and Cornea Clinic at Southern California College of Optometry.

The older we get the more shit starts going. First it was my strength, there was a time when I could carry two 5-​gallon water jugs like nothing. Now the only jugs I want to hold are the ones attached to a woman, which truth be told is a far better option than overrated water.
Next was my vision. Years ago i’d be able to see clear as hell at night, now I can’t see worth a fuck without my glasses. That’s where Doc Stein and his team of eye people comes in. Everytime I go in they sit me down in this chair and blow air in my eyes, then they tell me to keep my eyes open during the process. Ummm… you try keeping your eyes open while air is blowing in that shit. After some more tests the doc finally had my prescription ready, picked some frames and was on my way.
A week later my glasses came in and I was able to see for days. Now instead of looking like Mr. Magoo, bumping into shit or walking past a fish market saying «Hello ladies,» I can finally hold my head up high while walking instead of looking down looking out for shit that might make me trip and bust my ass. Thanks Doc Stein.

I was really looking forward to purchasing those frames. I stood for 15min waiting for someone to pull a frame from behind the counter, and nobody was able to take a split second to do that. There was one customer (a family) being helped, and 4 associates. I walked out. Ridiculous.

Marilou is always in a great mood and happy to help. Have purchased several sunglasses there over the years. Really good selection. Helps that they can tell you what looks good on your face — I’m pretty bad at that.

I’ve been a patient here since 1996. I got abrasions on my corneas right after I bought my first convertible. Dr. Au saw me right away He sent me to Dr. Stein for a secondary consult without me having to ask. They are professionals who treat you with serious medical attention not «medical theatre» the staff is super friendly and fun. They give me a 20% discount for being a nurse. Vets, seniors and uninsured get discounts too. When Costco opened I was tempted to take the Rx there. My daughter said «Mom, don’t you want this place with the real doctors to be here anymore?» She was about 11 yrs old, she was right though. If my frames need adjusting I can just pop in and the same great people who helped me pick them out and fitted them just right will adjust them back to new again. Try that a Costco on a Saturday. Get your Charmin at Costco, get your eye care at Steins. It matters.

5 stars solid! Was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Pearla fixed my favorite pair of sunglasses and made them look like brand new :). Will I go back, DEFINITELY.

My family has been using Stein Optometric for years; however, it was the Manhattan Beach location. Last year we relocated and found that this location is closer to us. We wondered if we would have the same experience and I have to say its been better.
–Selection of glasses? Fantastic! This is what attracted me to this place.
–Price? It can be expensive because they have top brands & styles.
–Doctor? He’s been fantastic; approachable & friendly
–Staff? For the most part friendly
–Availability for appointment? I have a tendency to call last minute and they’ve always gotten me in quickly
–Location? I’m not a fan of this mall, but parking is free and if you know where to park you can get in & out quickly

I think it’s weird to have an optometrist in the mall and it took me a while to fully trust the situation. But they do a great job here. The optometrists are excellent, the opticians are excellent, their frame prices are very reasonable, and their customer service is also really good. They’re open late and on Sundays, too.

Was not a fan of the staff, the doctor was very friendly and nice but the staff could use some people skills training. They tried selling me $ 300+ frames, I know you have to make money but I just told you to keep under $ 150 and you’re adamant on showing me the expensive frames?! I left and didn’t bother coming back. Nope.

I’ve been going here for several years for both eyeglasses and contact lenses. I’m always impressed and thankful for how helpful the staff and doctors are. Doctor Kawamura is attentive to my needs (I have astigmatism which makes choosing the right contact lenses fun) and is very patient and takes time to answer any questions I may have.
True, their office is located in the mall but it’s not difficult to find (especially if you use the maps). Call ahead to make an appointment and you will be fine.

Eva is always wonderful and so helpful! I cannot thank her enough — she helped me tremendously today. She saved me a lot of time and effort by offering her help and solving a difficult problem for me. Thank you so much!
Marilou is great! She is very knowledgeable and very nice. She have spent 2 hours (!) choosing just the right frame for me for my last glasses. Now I love my glasses so much that I prefer them to contact lens.
Dr. Tracy Kawamura is very caring, very knowledgeable. I trust her completely.
The whole office is run very well and everyone is very pleasant and helpful.
I cannot even imagine going anywhere else!
I highly recommend Stein Optometric Center.

FYI This place is IN THE MALL. I was driving around, looking for it, and then realized it was in the mall LOL
The office staff was very nice and I liked that I could see a doctor within a day of calling. But Dr. Au kept calling me ‘sweetie’. I’m the same age as you, dude. I’m not 20 and you aren’t 65.
The medical furniture was also sort of beat up.
The selection of glasses was really nice and I liked the mall location. But i’m not sure I’d go back, honestly…

This place is basic at best. I’ve been to bad eye doctors before so it’s no surprise, but I was really unhappy with my service. Their motto of «having convent hours» seems to be the only thing they have going for them. The people at the front desk can be snooty, and when I was trying on potential frames the helper got tired of me after barely 10 minutes and even though I said I wanted round glasses she kept pulling out rectangle ones. My vision is awful so maybe this place just isn’t specialized enough to see me. Just got my frames back and the prescription is weird. How come I can read better further away in my old lenses than what I just bought? That was the reason why I went there. Waste of money and time.

The experience depends on which doctor you see,
However it doesn’t have dedicated parking, you basically need to park at the mall and find the place at the map in the mall, for me it was quite confusing, and even tough it says you don’t need appointment to get exam, YOU ACTUALLY DO, otherwise you will waste a lot of time just sitting there and waiting.
Other thank that, it looks nice.

It’s inside of the mall, kind of a weird location for an eye doctor. The clinic is nice, but the whole thing is a bit salesy. I’m not sure how but every time I go to buy glasses I end up spending so much money by the time I get done with the anti-​scratch lenses and anti-​glare, etc. Furthermore, I recently went to a new optometrist and they had a machine that doesn’t need to blow air in your eyes. As that was by far the worst part of the exam I only wished I knew there was an alternative years ago!

I didnt see a doctor for my eyes, but had my prescription. Came into Steins to see if they would have new glasses i would like. Unfortunately, nothing i saw, but was offered if i wanted that i could re-​order the glasses i had. They were raybans but from 3 years ago. Fortunately they called and rayban had it available. I ordered the glasses along with my prescription. The price was great, and happy with what i paid. Id like to mention a woman Pamela who works at Stein that she helped me through everything, and appreciated her help and all my care for my new glasses. Thanks Pamela.

I have been going to an optometrist for 40 years, most of my life. My vision sucks and so I have had quite a few optometrist in my life. So when my friend axed me about my doc visit, I paused I told her that it was the best visit I had with a doc, prolly ever. I dont think I have ever had a BAD doc persay, but I definitely had a great doc at Stein Optometric. He (Dr Au) made me comfortable and filled my head with some knowledge and chastised me (just a little) about how I wear my contacts 24 hours a day, which is cool. If you are close by, go see Dr Au.
PLUS they said my contacts will be here on Monday, and bing bam boom, I get a call Monday morning that my contacts came in. Not the week it took at my last place, NICE!

Wow, what a pleasant experience I had. Who knew that getting your eye check up and glasses could be so much fun! The staff here was so wonderful, friendly, and patient, I just couldn’t help but want to linger around with them. Michelle was especially helpful in finalizing some choices for frames because I am just so darn indecisive! So if you are reading this, thank you Michelle! And if you’re also indecisive like me, make sure to strongly consider their suggestions. The staff here generally know what would look good and what would not on you, so definitely take advantage of their knowledge.
Dr Eric To was also probably the nicest Optometrist I have ever met. He took his time and explained everything he was doing, and also gave me advice and precautionary steps to ensure healthy eyes (like how a good doctor should).
5 stars for such an affectionate staff, wide selection of frames, and quality service. If you’re in need of new contacts, glasses, or whatever… look no further and come check this place out!
