Nancy Mullan, MD

I could tell from my first appointment that this was someone who was going to be difficult to work with. Not that she doesn’t have some lovely traits – she has a nice, unaffected, earthy, let’s-get-down-to-business attitude. But she’s disorganized, impatient, unfocused, and extremely defensive. With MTHFR problems, there are only a handful of MD’s in the country to choose from. Dr. Mullan is the only one I found in L.A. She works as a team with Dr. Yasko, who wrote the book on this stuff. So, though it is an expensive proposition (Dr. Mullan has opted out of the insurance market, so the fees, supplements, and testing are all out-​of-​pocket), beggars can’t be choosers.
With 20 years of chronic fatigue syndrome, I’ve seen many doctors, so I don’t go into a new doc’s office with high expectations, nor do I expect to be cured. But I did expect at least a little concern and willingness to take time with me for the $ 1,000’s of dollars, and hours of time I invested with her. Instead, after nearly a year of assiduously following her protocols, she suddenly cast me out as a patient – refusing to see me, and ignoring my pleading emails to have one last appointment with her so as to at least have some closure. By closure, I meant, «Just tell me whether there is anything further that might be done, or have we reached to end of what you can offer.»
[In all fairness, she did email the name of a homeopath she thought might help. But I had already tried that approach. So I begged her not to close the door on me. She wrote back, that she wasn’t, and after consulting with the homeopath, I could see her again. I suspected that she was blowing me off. And, indeed, after several months of unsuccessful homeopathic treatments, all emails I sent to her were ignored.]
Here’s how it works. Dr. Mullan has no office staff. Everything is handled online. This saves money for her, and makes more work for you. After your initial appointment, she refers you to Dr. Yasko’s website, where you purchase the lab work. When the tests come back, Dr. Yasko reviews them and makes comments. Then you book another appointment with Dr, Mullan to go over the comments. (Mullan defers to Yasko on everything. I’m not really sure – beyond the basics of how the MTHFR cycle works – that Mullan really knows much of anything.) You are then tasked to return to Yasko’s site to buy a dozen or so of her line of supplements. By the way, those supplements are higher priced for lower dosage, and many of the ingredients are concealed by proprietary labeling so you don’t know how much you’re really getting. A month or so after using these supps, you book another appointment. Each subsequent visit, you bring with you a detailed list – three or four pages – of the supplements you’ve been taking, and Dr. Mullan adds or removes supplements based on how you’re doing.
Despite all that expensive testing, their approach is mostly just to throw everything at you and see what sticks. If you’re responding well, great! But if you’re not, you’re out of luck. They don’t take time to work with you as an individual. So if you fail to respond, you’re just a big nuisance to them.
FYI, I have since discovered a MTHFR specialist in Austin, TX who is far ahead of the Mullan/​Yasko team in knowledge, testing, and caring. Plus he takes insurance.

I went to Dr. Mullan as my last option and hope and paid quite a bit for her service and $ 400 for the supplements she recommended and she just dances around my questions with no real answers. Its so sad as I really thought she could be of help. She cannot answer 1 question thoroughly, honestly I don’t think she really knows what she is talking about. I gave her a chance by directly expressing how I felt about her service. I spent 2 hours there and she never addressed or answered anything accurately. She looked through her Dr. Amy Yasko’s book and still couldn’t really answer much. She then advised that I have to do more tests and that I don’t have enough for her to go off of. Meanwhile I came in with 2 valid tests but then I figured maybe she is right; so I got on the call that she does regularly and listened to others who had extensive testing and supplementing and she danced around their questions as well.
While she gets on the phone with me on the call, she calls me dead weight and depressed; says that she is not there to carry me because I wanted real answers and muted me and moved on.
While in her office, she advised me not to do the GAPs or paleo diet that I was on but on the phone tells me to do so. While in her office, she says to me that she is really impressed by the amount of research I have done and that I should be a lot sicker than I am but then on the phone tells me that I am dead weight and depressed because I challenged her B.S.
I am really upset and honestly doing this review to really help others save their time and money. It is definitely not worth it. I am certain there is real help out there with real NDs that actually know this field of work and she is not one of them.

Dr. Nancy Mullan is a beautiful person. She is an expert in her field and has helped our family so much. I am very grateful to her. She came highly recommended and I know why. I would recommend her and her website for information re: healing from a genetics point of view. Thank you Dr. Mullan for everything.
