Burbank Animal Shelter

Yes this place is clean and usually the staff are responsive. I’m here now though and wanted to ask questions about 3 different dogs and all the volunteer at the front could say was no one is available to help. Look — I get its 15 minutes to closing (early at 2 pm) on New Year’s Eve but you’re still open and you should try to adopt a dog out especially since you’re closed tomorrow! I’m so frustrated because I’m ready to adopt a dog today. In fact the one I want is 10 years old and missing an eye. How long you think he’s gonna last at any shelter!!!
Just sad and angry right now. These people are more interested in going home than helping animals.

This is a great animal shelter. The people that work here really care for the dogs. I adopted a dog 2 years ago and it was probably one the best decisions of my life. I adopted a pitbull and it is a great dog

Clean facility, smaller than some of the other operations around the city but you can see the care and time the staff puts in. Front desk is very professional and helpful. They’re also open on Mondays when most animal shelters are closed, which is great. While their adoption process is a bit more involved than others, it’s still efficient and, most of all, protects their furry friends from unknown variables – like whether or not they’ll get along with your current animals at home, as well as the dreadful humans who browse shelters for the wrong reasons. Lots of cuties here. Adopt a forever friend!

I am a sucker for a cute face. Especially when it’s furry and accompanied by a wet nose. It helps that I volunteer here, it’s difficult to not get attached to some of these furry friends. Most are adopted and end up with wonderful homes. It’s a fantastic option to going through a breeder if you’re in the market for a puppy, dog or cat. They all receive a full physical exam, their inoculations are up to date and they are given a temperament evaluation as well.
So when you are looking for a furry friend to complete your family, look no further than the Burbank Animal Shelter!

We adopted our baby Boo-​Weenie from the burbank shelter after losing 2 cats earlier in the year. the staff was very helpful and let us take our time exploring and looking at new babies.

This place is clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I adopted a cat about a year ago from the Burbank Animal Shelter and she’s been a blessing! The staff was hesitant on letting us take her because apparently someone else adopted her before only to return her the next day because it was «a difficult cat». They really made sure me and my boyfriend knew what we were committing to and we’re ready to take on the responsibility. And she was super scared for a while after we brought her home but now she’s the sweetest cat I’ve ever had.
The Shelter gave us very good advise and explained specifically how to transition the cat from the shelter to a new home. They also gave us the information of affordable vets in our area and my cat’s complete medical record. Great experience and amazing cat!

Hate writing a bad review about an animal shelter, but I have to share my experience. As we were driving home, I noticed a little dog with a harness and tag walking down a busy street on his own. My husband drove around the street so we could help the dog. The dog had a collar with Burbank Animal Shelter name and phone number on the tag. We decided to drive the little dog to the shelter. We told the officer there what had happened. He asked us if we would drive the dog to its owner if he can locate them. We said we’d rather leave the dog there so the owner can pick him up because we were in the middle of errands. However, we said we’d take the dog to his owner if they won’t take him. The officer said they’re not open yet. It’s 9:30, and the shelter opened at 10:00. In the end the officer took the dog anyways. The officer did help the dog eventhough they were still closed. That was good. However, we called the shelter later on to find out if the owner was located because we just felt bad for the dog as he looked scared when we found him. The lady who answered the phone just said, «I can’t help you» repeatedly. She didn’t even made any sort of effort to find out the status of the dog. She was just plain rude. I don’t know why she even bothered to answer the phone with that bad attitude. I truly hope she cares more about getting lost pets to their rightful owner. Hope she treats the animals at the shelter nicer than she treats people.

Burbank animal shelter is amazing!!! The kennels are half indoor and half outdoor, so the dogs in the kennels get a lot of fresh air. They have such sweet dogs there and we just love going there to say hello to all happy furry doggies there. If you go a little bit more back you will reach the cat room! The cat area is also really nice! It is in an enclosed back room separate from the dog area. They have many adorable purring kitties ready to meet you!

I have two animals adopted from this shelter. We got our dog from them in 2005, and our cat in 2014.
I already had a cat at home and I wanted for her to have a friend. She is a very active kitty and loves to play. I thought it would be a good idea for her to have a pal so they can keep each other company. I was not sure about how to pick the right cat for her. I went to Burbank shelter a few times and talked to a lady who was volunteering there. She was really nice, patient and friendly. She knew a lot about every single cat they had there at that time, and she let me hold some of the cats we thought would be a good match for our house. We adopted a very friendly older cat who turned out to be a perfect match for our household.
I can’t imagine anyone giving a bad review to this shelter. People who work there really go out of their way to give every animal a home. They have all sorts of adoption events, fee discounts and wavers. They also keep the animals for a long time in the shelter instead of putting them down like some other city shelters do. The cat i adopted was in this shelter for 2.5 months. I don’t think she would last that long in most LA city shelters.

Please note that this review is strictly regarding giving donations to the shelter. The shelter itself is wonderful and i would adopt again from them, BUT no more donations. I have been bringing in veterinary supplies ever since I adopted from there. I guess they are not needed, or appreciated. I came in today. No one lifted a finger to help me carry a large box of veterinary supplies and a large bag of other supplies. They just sat there and complained. Not even a smile or a thank you. No more…

For a while now, my boyfriend and I have been considering adopting a pup and getting a new friend for my golden retriever. We noticed this shelter on the way to Krispy Kreme and wanted to check it out, but it was already closed so we made it a priority to come back.
Upon entrance is the reception area. Dogs and puppies are located in the next building over. Very clean, well-​kept and not unbearably smelly. Each kennel had posted biographies of basic info, good qualities and how/​why the dog or puppy ended up at the animal shelter. I remember most of them were abandoned and found in public places, tied to a tree somewhere or their owners were unable to keep them. Every one of them had a touching story and it seemed like they knew how to play up their «puppy dog eyes», which made me melt and want to take them all home. But once they spotted a staff member, there was an uproar. I’m guessing they wanted to be fed or let out to play. You can also walk around the outside of the kennels, but there are no biographies for you to read. At the end of this hall with dogs and puppies, there’s a door that leads into a room with cats.
I was interested in either a pit bull puppy or beagle puppy. Unfortunately there were only two (non-​pit bull) puppies who were a few months old, both had not received all their shots and weren’t ready for adoption so we were unable to meet them out of their cage. There were plenty of pit bulls ranging from 2 – 6 years old, all very calm and beautiful, but none that were younger. I’d love to take these bigger ones home, but my living situation isn’t conducive to housing two big dogs at the moment. I will continue to check their website, and other animal shelter websites, but seeing them in person is a greater experience.

I have a dog that is an escape artist and often comes to jail here. When I come to pick her up I can’t help but look around. I’m an animal lover. This shelter is nice and clean and has great employees.

Was holding off because I didn’t want to write when I was so angry, but since I’m back to square one with this adopted dog, here it is: Tried to believe this was a really pro-​animal shelter. Went several times looking for a dog that would possibly be a good pal for my adult dog. 1^st try: Found a possible match and went to the desk to ask to see the dog. A woman, who was in the back office and who I never saw, shouted out to the man at the front «That dog’s too spirited for her». Please keep in mind that I had walked in on my own two feet and wasn’t wheeled in on a gurney. I went back to the cages to look for another dog — found one and the man at the desk (nice guy) said there was no one to show him to me –could I come back in 20 minutes? I returned as promised and another guy was now manning the desk (dark hair –shaved up the side). I told him I wanted to see a dog and he said he couldn’t do that because they were so busy (I saw no one around, btw). I told him I’d already gone and come back, as directed and would wait. It was now 3:45. he said I’d have to come back tomorrow because they stop showing dogs at 4:30. I mentioned I’d been there at 3 pm and now it’s only 3:45 — well before the cut off. He said it wouldn’t happen and I’d have to come back some other time. Not even apologetic.
I wrote off that shelter for their rudeness and lack of consideration.
Last week, I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d give it one more shot. Luckily a nice guy was there and helped me with the dog that looked good. Took my dog in the next morning and they were okay, so went to the desk to adopt the dog. SADLY, that guy with the dark hair was there and he said, «Now what do you want to see?» in a very annoyed tone. I said I was there to adopt the dog. Just tried to look past his horrible personality. This was Wednesday and he said the dog would be neutered on Thursday and ready to pick up on the weekend. I called to check on the little guy and they told me he was doing great and should go home on Friday. Called again Friday to make sure he was okay. Was told they’d checked him and he was ready to go — no problems. When I arrived to pick him up around 3:45, they brought him out and he was bloody. The woman who held him said «whoops». Seriously. I looked at him and he’d chewed out his stitches — no one had ever looked at him, post surgery (obviously), and they didn’t even put a cone on his head to prevent it. She said, ‘hold on, I’ll be back’. I said to the the people at the desk that i’d rather pick him up after he’d healed from that. They said no. They brought him out again — he was wearing an ECollar that was a size too small and not helping, AND they had ‘stapled’ him back together. Basically, they handed this freaked out little dog to me and said ‘here you go — good luck’. Oh, and by the was, make sure you go right to a pet store and get him a cone that fits.
This was just the beginning. The dog has been in an E Collar day and night because he ripped a staple. He is now on sedatives and I’m heading to my 3^rd vet visit within 8 days of adopting him. An ounce of intelligent prevention — like putting on a plastic cone collar for that first night — would have probably avoided this last hellish week. He is clearly miserable and having issues navigating with that thing on his head. Shame on them for telling me he was okay to pick up when he had been gnawing on himself all night. Shame on them for not allowing him to stay for a couple of days to heal a bit before being sent off to a new home with another dog (who won’t go near him now because he just hits her in the face with that collar), shame on them for not even considering a dog that has just had major surgery will probably want to get at the area. If you go to Burbank Animal Shelter and they are going to spay or neuter your pet — go there yourself and check the animal so that you don’t go through what is happening in my house. In sum: the nice people there were very nice, but the rude ones kind of ruin it and they are seriously lacking in post-​surgery monitoring. Never again,

I had a great experience here. Plus, I brought home a new family member. I found the staff to be very animal friendly. They really do care about all animals that they come across. This is not an easy job people. Give them a break. I was at the shelter twice & witness professional fair treatment of everyone that came thru the doors. Great job BAS!

This shelter is a FRAUD !!! I just called trying to locate a no-​kill shelter. Which is what they advertise themselves as. They are not. The lady who answered the phone with the condescending tone so much as bragged about it. She proudly stated ’ no shelters are no-​kill ‘. When I asked why they were described as such on the Internet, she flippantly said ’ oh that’s an error.’ Like it was no big deal. Avoid this place. Some people suck.

My boyfriend and I came here just because. We drive by this place all the time and decided to stop by. And I’m glad we did: D all the animals there are so lovable! I wish I could adopt them all. The staff were very helpful and answered our questions regarding a dog we really liked and hoping to adopt. Even though the place is small and it smelled kinda bad, I didn’t mind at all. Just seeing the dogs, cats, rabbits, and even turtles in a safe place is all that matters to me. One day I hope to adopt and I’m definitely going to come here.

Not to be a braggy Burbanker, but the BAS is absolutely a hit. Well-​cared for dogs and cats for adoption and that’s only the half of it. Rabbits, turtles and even chickens all ready for good homes (i.e., yours).
Of particular note is the awesome Kitten Foster program, one of the few in LA. Kittens do not live at the shelter; they are fostered in volunteers’ homes and, if necessary, bottle and hand-​fed by some incredible volunteers. They bring their kittens to regular Kitten Fairs at the shelter, and can share all kinds of info with you about their fosters. All pets are micro-​chipped and spayed/​neutered right at the BAS.
All pets available for adoption can be viewed on the BAS website, which might not be a bad way to start, as there will be plenty of heart-​melters to greet you on any given day. All animal shelters have a hint of sadness about them, and Burbank’s is no exception (heartbreaking notes on each cage tell the tale — «owner abandoned,» «owner evicted and can’t keep,» «stray found in Vons parking lot,» etc.), but the pets here, particularly the dogs and cats, seem well-​cared for and ready for … you?
Tip — upon entering the shelter, the uniformed «officers» you see can be a bit gruff. They are. In addition to staffing the shelter for adoption purposes, they also have other tasks which, I guess, bring other challenges. Just breeze past them and look for a BAS volunteer — they’ll match you with the perfect pet. A hit!

I wish i could adopt them all! I know it’s hard taking care of several dogs and cats, but this place needs to update how they take care of their animals!
There was several dog poo that seemed like it was dried up for days in the pens. The cats had no space to move. The only animal that had a ton of space was the chicken… ONE CHICKEN!
There was one pitt bull that I wanted to personally adopt. She was very aggressive, but she was afraid of human interaction. She would go to the back of the pen once we went by her, and she would bark at us in a bad tone. She seemed like an abused dog :(
Guys! Try to adopt these animals first!

Excellent animal shelter. The staff is very knowledgable and honest about everything.
I had been fostering kittens here until I moved and I am very excited to start back up soon. They take fantastic care of all the animals and give them the best health services. I ended up adopting my first foster kitten before I moved and they are so reasonable.
The shelter is very clean all volunteers do an excellent job at keeping it that way. The animals have very nice places to sleep and play it isn’t an awful cramped cage. I am waiting until I can adopt a dog and will be doing it from here. They have a variety of breeds and will tell you as much history as they know.
Much nicer than the East Valley Shelter. The Volunteers are awesome and dedicated, if you are able to foster you should!

They provide shelter for animals which is needed.
Unfortunately, the kennel with the dogs smelled bad. I also saw feces that needed to be cleaned out of an enclosure and didn’t see any staff inside. Hopefully, the staff was just outside working and they have a regular inspection schedule for the enclosures. I would think there would be plenty of people that would like to volunteer to help clean the place, so it doesn’t smell so bad.
I hate to compare apples and oranges, but the Pasadena Animal Shelter is so much nicer.
