Toy Space

The people there are super nice to start. They help you with pretty much everything you need there. The selection of toys and fun games are large and amazing. If you want to get a good toy, come here.

I could have given it 3 stars but that would be for location, location, location.
Not much else going for it. The inventory is hohum and the staff is not quite up to hohum.
Still, I will use it in a pinch because it is so conveniently located. Prices not too bad and it is always nice to be out of the crush and long lines of the big stores…

After hearing about this place on various blogs I happened to walk past when heading to Fonda for dinner.
At first glance it’s a typical park slope toy store, but it does have its own unique properties that makes it worth visiting. The best part is its far enough off the beaten track that unlike little things on 7^th, I have space to walk around.

I called to purchase the Leapad2. She sharply replied that they don’t carry the product. The highest grossing toy of 2012, and possibly the most popular toy for this age group in the world but a TOY STORE refuses to carry this TOY. If I ran this store I’d be scratching my head wondering what the heck I was doing running a toy store.

I was in the market for some board games so I went to Toy Space. The store staff was a couple of college kids who were pretty unhelpful. I found 3 board games and they were more expensive than I’d anticipated. The very next week I was at Barnes and Noble and saw all 3 items, all for half the price. The ‘Uno’ cards at Toy Space that were $ 10 were $ 5 at B&N. The exact same Scrabble game that was $ 32 at Toy Space was $ 16 at B&N. I’m all for supporting the indie store, but not if the indie store is ripping me off!

I’ve been here before during the holiday rush because I heard that they have a unique line of toys for kids. And that’s true. However, I recently ventured here to check out gifts for my nephew’s first birthday.
During my previous visit, I was too distracted by the unique toys being offered in this small space to place much thought into the fact that no one paid very much attention that a customer (Yours truly) had walked right in. I brushed it off because after all it was the Christmas season. Busy, busy, busy… busy time.
However, I stopped by very recently. It was quite the opposite from my last visit: it was quiet, there was another customer already there being helped by a sales girl, and there was someone by the register. Again, it’s post-​holiday, not busy and still no greeting – nada. I’m sorry is this the morgue or a toy store. I’m not expecting cartwheels, but toys are supposed to be fun… right? What’s the deal?
Well, I shrugged it off. I was there well over 15 minutes checking out the cool (and they do in fact have some cool items in here) toys. But not once did anyone ask me if I was getting along fine or if I needed anything. And to make my entire experience weirder, the gentleman in front of me was offered complimentary gift wrapping, and when it was my turn at the register mum’s the word on the gift-​wrapping option. I left it alone quite frankly because it’s a first birthday not a wedding, and I wasn’t interested in white gift wrapping paper anyway. But, it is the «principalities» (You gotta love Friday, the movie).
To be quiet honest, I do expect some form of customer service, especially from a local business. Yes, even in New York City, I expect it.
Bottomline: Everyone’s experience is different. But every time I’ve come here my experience has been the same: lackluster. I try to be fair in all my reviews, and I won’t be any different here: this store has some interesting toys that are fun and cerebral for the smart tykes in your life. Come here and experience it for yourself. If I were to vote on the toys alone they’d get four stars.
Unfortunately, I won’t be going back because customer service is an important part of my shopping experience.
And you know this man! (Okay, seriously that’s my last homage to Friday).

I don’t have kids, but since most of my friends are now parents I seem to buy lots of presents for youngsters so I am grateful to have come across this place. The store makes it easy to buy a great gift that the baby/​kids and their parents will equally love. I appreciate that its a small store with a huge selection that is well organized and edited.

I like this shop as well but I’m surprised no one has said anything about the high prices. Then again it is park slope.

this place has all the favorites you remember from way back when! great selection of diy crafty kits and science experiments in a box. I like that you cam spend $ 2. or $ 20. and find something super cool!

Great shop! Super helpful staff. great selection of edgy and innovative toys for all ages. really like that they carry lots of wood and natural type toys in addition to your standard fare. Free gift wrap on your first two gifts, then $ 1.00 per thereafter. Highly recommended.

I love this place! I nerd out when it comes to kids’ toys, not to mention science-​y kids toys, and then I discovered the back wall of Toy Space. Not only do they have a giant assortment of tablets that turn into something else when you put them in water (read: AMAZING!), they also have some crazy NASA-​side kids’ projects in the back,
Two that intrigued me were the Antquarium, an ant farm «in 3D» because you could see the tunnels as ants would dig them since the «soil» was actually a non-​toxic gel; and the Growth Pods, where they have a hydro-​gel substance with which you can grow tomato seedlings, basil seedlings, and flower seedlings. This blew my mind.
Of course I could have seen al that at, say, a Discovery Channel Store, but the thing that sets this place apart is everything else they carry that you can’t find at a Toys R Us or FAO Schwarz: subway trains for train sets, Ugly Dolls, and a really neat model car stand.
It’s a little on the young side for toys, but I’m always happy to relive my childhood.

The best of the best in my honest opinion. I echo the sentiment of the previous two reviewers. These toys are classic, unique and one of a kind, the type of toys that won’t be found in Toys’R’Us but perhaps in another country who deem sensible toys are suitable for children to play and learn. The toys are highly engaging and kids can really get immersed into them. ToySpace is the best place to go for gift ideas. Their selections are well picked, I have no complaints.

love, love love LOVE this toy store. Tons of great European brands, lots of multi-​sensory/​multi-​intelligence enhancing toys to choose from. None of the heinous Disney/​cartoon character plastic shit that makes people’s homes look ghetto. The toys are somehow stylish looking (is that possible?) yet actually fun for the little ones.

It seems like every week I’m buying another baby/​kid gift and so I’ve really been getting to know the local Brooklyn toy stores quite well. Toy Space is definitely my favourite. It’s a great combo between the ultra high end toy/​clothing stores that dot 7^th and 5^th Avenues in Park Slope and the really super old-​school stores that are dominated by Disney and Ernie and Bert figurines. Nothing against Ernie and Bert — I certainly did love them as a child — but I just can’t hand my friends an Ernie or Bert figurine for their new baby. It just seems weird.
Anyway, what I like about Toy Space is that it is divided into age-​appropriate sections and it is extremely affordable! Which is really helpful when I’m buying a baby gift each week. The center of the store has lots of little gadgets at knee-​high level and I always see at least three or four kids poking around the magnetic stones and farm animal displays. The staff is helpful and make great recommendations. I just wish that they had a frequent-​purchaser incentive card or something like that!
