History

Established in 2010.

ABOUT SYD’S: Syd’s was born and raised in North Philly and growing up loved to hear his Mom say, «I’m not cooking tonight. Here’s $ 5, go get yourself something to eat.» That meant Syd’s could check out any of the numerous steak and hoagie shops in the neighborhood.

The owners of these sandwich shops took sandwich making seriously.

After leaving Philly, Syd’s realized that no place outside of Philly got steaks or hoagies right. So ending up in New York almost 20 years ago, Syd’s got the idea to open a sandwich shop in the tradition of those he frequented in North Philly. Sandwich shops where you could get a cheese steak or hoagie made with quality, fresh ingredients, and made the North Philly way, SERIOUSLY.

In September 2010, Syd’s opened its doors. Dedicated to preserving the North Philly tradition of serious sandwich making, Syd’s wants to share the incredibly great tasting sandwich experiences of his youth. Come check it out. The sandwiches are good, SERIOUSLY.

It was ok for my first visit. Me and my bf went in for their subs. I ordered the pastrami he ordered steak and egg. Then we were told breakfast stops at 4. It would be nice if they put that info on their menu. We then saw the owner and asked if we could still get it because it’s not listed. He acted like he wasn’t the owner until the cashier called his name — what business owner wouldn’t want u to know that they own this place? Aren’t u proud of your business? My point is they did not get points for customer service. The cashier was complaining she didn’t get 8 hour shifts, shouldn’t be said in front of customers.
Overall the pastrami was good. The steak was ok. Not sure if I will return. First impressions are everything to me…

Great neighborhood sandwich spot. If you are serious about where you get your sandwich, this place goes over and above any meat/​cheese/​everything on a roll at the bodega. I had the jerk chicken sandwich. It was awesome!!!

I finally made it! After being opened for years, and driving by just as long, I was able to make the time to stop by Syd’s. Now I can only speak on the Veggie Cheesesteak, which was quite tasty. I anticipated it being soy beef based but it was mushrooms, zuccini, and other veggies along with you choice of melted cheese. As I unwrapped it at home the flavor from the heat wafted from below and the first bite was quite good. I do wish it had a bit more flavor from spices and sauce, but nonetheless it was quite tasty.
I feel it could be enhanced with some seitan or soy strips, but then perhaps people would ask for those to be the primary ingredients and then it’d be too expensive. I dunno. But I do know that I’ll be having it again. I should add that Syd himself took my order and we had a good chat about entrepreneurship. Great experience all around!

A great option when you want a delicious, take-​out meal. I’ve yet to be disappointed with a cheesesteak (or turkey steak), even when they get my order wrong…
Yeah, Syd’s is clearly delicious, because they are incredibly busy every time we go. If you want a sandwich, I suggest doing it in person and waiting the 15 minutes it’ll take to fulfill your order. They now have ordering online, but for whatever reason it seems like businesses around here don’t like to tell you how long it will actually be. So if you’re like us, you’ll be waiting for an hour (or more) for a sandwich that you thought would be there in 30 minutes. As for the errors with our orders, I’m not sure why, but sometimes our orders don’t have the veggies we ordered. It’s happened to three or four sandwiches. Like I said, it’s not the end of the world because they are delicious regardless, but they might not be as organized as we’d like them to be. Lastly, you should always get the footlong, unless you really can’t eat that much. The six inch is probably six inches, but it’s certainly less than half of a footlong.

So, I always try and give the things in my neighborhood a try. I’ve gone at least three times & I must say that the biggest problem with Syd’s is not the food. Actually the food is great. The problem is the wait. I mean, I want to give more stars but every time I go there I wait for so long I have to go to the bodega to get a snack and come back. It’s one of the few places in the hood to get a good cheesesteak from but I often find myself settling for something else at another restaurant because I’m just too hungry to wait! That aside, the staff is always super friendly and the prices are right for the area. If they could just move a tad bit faster I’d probably go more often.

This is usually the go to spot when I’m visiting my BFF in Brooklyn. The sandwiches are very big. Unless you’re starving… one can usually be satisfied with half and save the other half later for dinner or a snack. Quick delivery! Potato Salad is awesome!

Their food is great, and if they were at all reliable, they’d be an easy four, maybe even five stars. But they mess up so much. Order ham, get pepper turkey. Order no lettuce, get lettuce. Order it dry, get mayo. First of all, who the hell puts mayo on an italian sub? If you’re gonna mess up a dry Italian sub, at least mess it up right and put on oil and vinegar. Second of all, I ordered it for my wife who doesn’t eat mayo.
Of course they were closed by the time she got home, so there was no fixing it. I may as well have put the money I spent between two slices of bread and thrown it straight in the trash, like she did with the sandwich.
To be clear, I’ve only ever ordered from them via GrubHub. Maybe they’re better on a walk in. Maybe they haven’t got GrubHub figured out. At any rate, if you’re not picky about what you end up getting, take a shot. If you want what you order… order someplace else.

The tuna is really good and so is the bread. They gave me a huge helping of tuna also. Did not shy there. A lot of topping choices and they are really big sandwiches. Tasted great.
Only complaint is I asked for avocado and mushrooms on my hoagie but there weren’t any when I unwrapped it. Not a huge deal, but I mean still bothersome a little.
Gonna come back and eat more hoagies and try other things because it all looks great.

Great Service. Interior eh. It’s great to see where your food is prepared tho, everything done fresh and right in front of you. I used the check– in offer, worth it. got the Turkey Hoagie and my friend got the cheesesteak. it is EXCELLENT… I recommend you go here… :)

I have always heard about Philly cheesesteaks, but I never tried one until this eatery popped up in my own backyard. I stopped in for lunch with my boss and I’ve got to say I love that the owner, Syd, is so friendly and well-​known by his customers. Everyone who walked in knew Syd, placed their order, and smiled as they walked out. Syd and I had a convo while I waited for my food and he even asked for my feedback. I was impressed by the food and the customer service. I also enjoyed the strawberry smoothie too.
Even before I ever stepped inside, I heard rave reviews so I referred a few friends who were blown away. Syd and his team will see more often as a neighbor and customer. Two thumbs up and bon appetit!

The sandwich are decent but I fine it to be over priced. I bought two 12 inch ham and cheese sandwich with bacon on both.
Each 12 inch starts at 8.49 but when u add cheese for 1 $ then 2 $ for bacon, plus tax. it pretty much came out to 25 $ not including tip. That’s with no chips or beverage.
Idk about y’all but for almost 30 $ for two Hoagies i rather take my chances with the corner grocery store. Considering the fact that they both use the same boars head products… :/

Syd is clearly not joking about his sandwiches… For evidence I hereby submit: the name of this place; and the two times so far I have ordered a cheesesteak via delivery I ate every tender morsel of meat stuck to the paper said sandwiches were wrapped in. Excellent flavor that rings true to a former PA resident. I haven’t been in to the actual location, but it looks shiny and new, bright and clean, a real standout on Nostrand. My mouth is watering, my work here is done.

Three and a half stars would have been my rating if it were possible.
I came across this place online on my never ending journey for great cheesesteaks near my Bed Stuy residence. They didn’t seem to be far but hadn’t yet delivered to my area. I wanted to head over there myself and see what all of the fuss what about but never got to it. They now deliver to me! Yay!
I ordered using GrubHub. I got a cheesesteak with green peppers and my mom got a pastrami hoagie (hot) with mustard on the side.
Cheesesteak– delicious, yet too small. I think $ 5.49 is slightly steep for the size of it. It literally looks like it was flattened.
Hoagie– Well, my mom wanted the meat cooked and mustard on the side. The meat wasn’t cooked and the mustard was MIA. I had even called minutes before ordering to ask if they cook the meat or leave it cold and was told I could have it either way.
The delivery guy was very polite and all smiles. That’s cool and all but they need to be more attentive when it comes to the special instructions box for deliveries. Until they improve on that front, my 3 star rating stands still.

Yes. It’s all about the cheesesteak. Well seasoned beef with cheese on a soft bread. …although I would have liked the bread to be toasted bread (personal preference). Generous portion
Drawbacks
–Small setting with literally 3 chairs. Don’t come here during lunch hour.
–The smoke, the smoke in here is crazy. While waiting for the food to be ready, my eyes watered and burned 3 times. to the point where I seriously considered just leaving altogether .
Besides all that, the food is that good that I will give it 4 stars.
Great lunch option for the neighborhood.

My eyes are still burning
The taste of the philly cheesesteak was second to none The bread was soft, the meat to cheese ratio was perfect. There wasn’t an overabundance of ketchup. And the half sandwiches are about one and a half times the size of the hoagies you get from the corner deli. This place loses a star because being in there fore more than ten minutes during the lunch rush does serious damage to the eyes. We made the poor decision to wait and eat in at the small table. My eyes burned for fifteen minutes after we left.
TIPS:
— order ahead and pick up
— wait for your order outside if the weather permits. (or even if it doesn’t permit)
— get a hold of your order before you get to the front, to avoid holding up the line
— if you’re ordering for two, and you’re ordering the same thing, you’re probably better off ordering one large and splitting it. Both parties will be satiated in the end.
— if you’re here for an extended period of time, you WILL end up smelling like a cheesesteak

Small place. I went there because of their cheese steak rave… it was decent, but not really impressed. It was lacking quite a bit of that «Philly» flavor. My boyfriend’s burger was really good — I would get that again next time… and continue my search for my favorite cheese steak in the Brooklyn area.
Service was great. The girl working the register was busy, but very sweet and kind. I’ll go back again, for sure.

The stuff inside the sandwich is quite good, but the bread didn’t really do it for me. It lacked the crusty exterior and chewy inside that I’ve come to expect Philly style sandwiches be served on. I’d describe the bread my sandwich came on as «fluffy». The bread used looked different than that on other Unilocal photos of this restaurant.
Maybe they were having an off day (girl working the register didn’t even know what their lunch special was). I’ll give them a try again in a few months time to see if its improved at all.

I’ve been holding off on writing a review because they didn’t have beef for a proper cheesesteak when I first went and I ordered regular hoagies there in after. But today I went in and asked…“Where’s the beef?.” Ok I didn’t quite say that but i did order the cheesesteak and I can confidently say that I love me some Syd’s. So here’s the story. Is this the exact replica of a Philly cheesesteak? No! Is it a really good frickin’ impostor? Yes! growing up in Pennsylvania you take the availability of cheesesteaks at your local deli or pizza shop for granted. Here in NY, particularly Brooklyn, your only real option is to get a steakum or horsemeat like cheesesteak from the bodega, which I just can’t fathom doing.
I had a little chat with the owner of Syd’s one day and he spoke about wanting to give folks an alternative to bodega sandwiches by offering fair prices, fresh ingredients, and stellar friendly service. I dig it. Oh and about that service. It has been nothing but impeccable every time I go in. They honor the Unilocal check-​in deals each time and the woman who usually works there is awesome! I hope they stick around for a while.

I don’t particularly like sandwiches, and I don’t particularly like meat, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed my cheese steak sandwich: 6″ cheese steak, with American Provolone, green peppers, mushrooms, mayo, no ketchup, no onions, hot peppers ($ 4.89 with taxes).
This is a pretty solid sandwich: the meat is flavorful, juicy, and plentiful. The American provolone proved a bit bland, just like the mushrooms and the barely hot peppers. Overall, however, well worth the $ 4.89 I paid.
The place is very bare, with 5 – 6 stools and no décor to speak of. Does it matter? Not really when the product is this good and cheap. Be prepared to wait, though, since each sandwich is made from scratch.
Hot (steaks) and cold (hoagies) sandwiches go from $ 3.99−4.99 for 6″, to $ 6.49−8.99 for 12″.
