Sixth Avenue Baptist Church: The Legacy of two praying men
Our roots came out of disease and turmoil. As a result of the prevalence of yellow fever in Manhattan during the summer of 1822 many people were dying. Two men Elijah Lewis and Eliakim Raymond retreated to Brooklyn from the scourge. There they found five other Baptists and commenced a prayer meeting. Those meetings grew and continued even after these two men returned to Manhattan. The result of those meetings was revival and a movement that started many Baptist Churches here in Brooklyn. That was even before Jeremiah Lanphier and his six charter prayer warriors started praying for revival in 1857. We are blessed that God hears the prayers of the faithful. Those prayers are the roots of our history and the vision of our future. Some notable historical tidbits of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church include our founding Pastor and hymwriter, Pastor Robert Wadsworth Lowry («Nothing But the Blood,» «Low in the Grave He Lay»).
