Re/Dress NYC

I’ve come to love the merchandise and staff of Re/​Dress. Which is why I am more than a little bummed that the store will be closing (forever ever? forever ever.) on November 20^th. Patrons with store credits, or cash amounts owed to them, are encouraged to visit before the store closing to clear out accounts. However, the online component of Re/​Dress won’t be leaving us, just the brick and mortar.
You’ll be sorely missed, Re/​Dress. I only ask that you think of me, think of me fondly when we’ve said goodbye.

I can’t say enough good things about Re/​Dress. I’ve shopped and sold clothes there and I looooove it. While living in NYC Re/​Dress became my primary shopping stop. I found so many great finds, some vintage and some very upscale (love me some Abbey Z!), for a fraction of the cost. The staff are all wonderful and always willing to give a second opinion. To quote Ani DiFranco, there’s even a «boyfriend holding pen» complete with lush couches.
The neighborhood Re/​Dress is located in is pretty great too. You can do shopping for all types of things in the area. There’s a Trader Joes so you can avoid the horrible lines at the Union Sq store. Or you can grab drinks and food from any plethora of awesome spots. It was definitely worth it to me to venture there from Roosevelt Island.
I feel that I should give the disclaimer that before trekking out there you should check their store hours, if they’re closed for inventory etc, their buying hours and what seasonal clothes they’re buying at the moment.
Sadly, I never had an opportunity to check out any of their events, but I love that this store has strong ties to the LGBTQ, fat positive, and feminist communities. Seriously, when was the last time you went shopping and were asked to donate money to a women’s domestic violence shelter or to get a fat positive ‘zine all by a bunch of hotties? This sounds so cheese food, but it’s not just another store to throw cash at, but rather a community; a lifestyle. I’d love to see Deb and the gang open a store in Boston. In the meantime I’ll be sure to hit their On the Road events.

This store is one of the reasons I can never move away from New York City. I actually live in northern Manhattan but it is well worth the trio to BK. The stock is a good mix of vintage and practical items as well as some really cute accessories. Yes, there are some expensive items on the rack, but I just took home two pairs of brand new Abby Z work pants (retail $ 119.00 each), a hot pink houndstooth dress (I am obsessed with houndstooth!), a really cute quarter sleeve dress with lace trim, AND a vintage tunic for eighty bucks. Well, it would have been eighty bucks, but I was also able to sell some ill-​fitting dresses and skirts to the store for merchandise credit, so the total I paid was less than five dollars!
Also, they have a cute husband corral under the stairs with comfy couches and magazines to look through — my honey didn’t want to leave the chaise he was relaxing on when it was time to go. And they didn’t say anything about him removing his shoes, either.
If you are looking for plus size or contemporary clothes this is the place to be — and it is awesome to support a business that supports fat positive culture to boot!

I adore this shop. It’s very spacious as are the dressing rooms which are named after fabulous plus-​sized divas and icons. They have basics, vintage, hand-​made, modern styles, a mix of everything. The only problem with that is sometimes you won’t find what you want. There have been days where I’ve walked out with a huge bag and days where I walked out empty-​handed.
You kinda have to try your luck. Sometimes you find the perfect outfit/​accesory, that will sometimes fit you and sometimes not. However it’s not your neighborhood Lane Bryant although they do have pieces from Lane Bryant. It’s a nice shopping experience. I also do appreciate that I can find clothes from Torrid here. It beats a trip on the Metro North.

I honestly can’t remember how I dealt with the ordeal that is clothes shopping before I went to Re/​Dress.
Because if you’re plus-​sized, your options are pretty limited, and if you want something decent, you’re often paying through the nose. Who wants that experience? I certainly don’t.
But May of last year, after hearing a bunch of rave reviews on LiveJournal and seeing some ads in Bust, I finally decided to step in here and find that perfect dress to wear on my birthday. Not only did I find it, it was beautiful enough that I got the courage to wear it – you see, it was a halter top, and at the time I wasn’t really comfortable showing my arms. But I bought a shrug, and eventually threw all caution to the wind and did without.
Since then I’ve been going here about once a month or so. Like most stores of its ilk, it can be very hit or miss – I was last there on Friday, and I bought a dress originally marked for $ 30, but I got it for $ 15 because they were having a 50%-off-everything-end-of-summer sale. But the few times before then that I had been there, I had come out empty-​handed. Before that, though, I was getting entire outfits for under $ 30. I’ve never tried any of their vintage, or bought any of the new stuff they have (which runs small, BTW).
But despite my previous bad luck, I will continue to go here. Why? Because you never know, it’s a friendly, welcoming environment with big fitting rooms (named after famous fat women of yore), and the shopgirls all have excellent fashion sense and are very helpful.
I also suggest subscribing to their newsletter so you’re not left out of the loop for other events – my only regret is not going to enough.

Now let me preface this that I wanted to give this store a five… But that was before I visited it.
I trek out there on Saturday, they’re closed. Okay, not a problem. A little disappointed but that’s my fault I guess, for not calling. No hard feelings there.
Trek out there again today. UTTERLY disappointing. I’m probably around a size ¹⁴⁄₁₆ and I can shop in most «straight» sized stores without a hitch, but vintage shopping is always a little harder. I was SO excited to come in this store because what I expected to find was not your typical «fat girl» attire…
However… That’s exactly what it is. It is a little less «vintage» and a little more Goodwill from the 2X section. Yes, a few things have the tags on them, but that doesn’t mean they’re cute or something you can’t find at Lane Bryant. Because most of their stuff IS Lane Bryant or Jones New York…
Walking through the store I felt tears of frustration because of the reviews that hyped it up. Its not even that it isn’t my style, because I went with two other plus sized girls with distinctive styles and they walked out with nothing.
I’m not sure what they mean when they say their buy-​back is stringent, because Conway carries some cuter clothes.
Le sigh.

This place is amazing. I usually pop in once a month or so to see what new stuff they have in — because they are ALWAYS getting in new stuff! Unlike a lot of other consignment/​vintage stores that just seem to have the same things sitting there for ever and ever.
As a size 12/​14, I love being able to walk into a store and have clothes fit and look good on me. I have never walked out of the place without buying something. It’s my favorite Brooklyn find, by far.

Looving this store. Clothes that actually fit you. Dressing rooms that are NOT teeny weeny and friendly staff to boot! ReDress… where have you been all my life.
The clothes are divided by sizes and easily organized. Since it’s a vintage store and not thrift, some of the prices are a bit high, but I did find some great shirts for very cheap prices.
Finally – a store that caters to the woman with curves who wants to look good! I’m in love!

Life-​changing.
What a revelation to find a store that’s reasonably priced, cool, and quirky. Staff is genuinely friendly. Fitting rooms the size of Kansas. Comfy lounge to hang out in. And they actually seem to want my business! This might take some getting used to.
The vintage selection (clothing more than 20-​years-​old, mostly dresses) is very nice, everything clean and sharp-​looking. The used selection is where most of the bargains seem to be, with a huge range of styles, from sequiny strapless things to Jones suits. The smallest selection is new from the manufacturer, but that’s the only place that you’ll find the same item in different sizes. Lots of jeans against the back wall, and shoes, belts, bags, and jewelry scattered throughout.
If you want to bring stuff in to sell, check the web site for guidelines first. They’re pretty stringent (a good thing), so why schlep unless you’ve got a shot at unloading your duds?

Picture it. October 2010. Exactly one week before my GF’s mom’s wedding & the first time I’d be face to face with the entire fam. I don’t need to tell you that this size 16 genderqueer had to look absolutely FAB & be comfy at the same time. I procrastinated long & hard & as per usual– was beginning to develop irritability & anxiety thinking about where to begin to look for a great outfit that wouldn’t require an entire paycheck or a full body-​binding girdle. Thanks to the staff (especially Erin Bunny Burrows) my GF & I found amazing fall dresses both under $ 20 & in under 20 minutes.
Yes– the shop can be hit or miss. But so can any other shop. & Yes– they have very inexpensive items coupled with higher priced items (say Target vs Abby Z) — & isn’t that nice? It does offer more for people who wear glitter, glam & vintage. Lots of dresses & skirts. Some but not much for those leaning far away from femme (Althou I have seen some fly masculine snap-​button vintage tops). But I’m fluid & always find something. & p. s.- they have the coziest dressing rooms. Large enough for a private fashion show in there. I appreciate this most of all.
Persistence– my delectable chunky friends– is key here. Come often & ask for assistance & you won’t be disappointed (even if you do leave empty handed once in a while…).

I don’t know why, but this winter I really needed a coat but never got around to buying one.
Then one day, I stopped into ReDress and they were having their 50 percent off winter coat sale. Not only did I get a super warm puffer coat, but I also got a waist length faux fur. And what made it even better? I got both for a mere $ 32.50. That’s right. $ 32.50.
What can I say about ReDress NYC that hasn’t already been said? It’s a complete and total gem. Since the first time I shopped at ReDress, I’ve always scored – whether I unload a few items that I didn’t need/​want anymore OR I found something to add to my already bulging closet – I’ve always considered myself lucky.
The staff is sincerely friendly and honest with shoppers – which is rare these days.
But the biggest reason I love ReDress: whenever I truly need an item or want something a little different, my answer is always right there on a rack.

I’ve never felt quite so at home in a clothing shop in NY. It’s one thing to have a store that accommodates to women of a particular size, but to slather on the icing of good taste, and a cherry of darling shop girls to boot? There is not much more any shopper could ask for.
I have found the plus size wear dull and limiting even here in the fashion capitol. Redress has a wonderful sampling of designer, vintage, and mid-​range new and used clothing. The vintage dress collection is beyond extensive, but if you’re not into retro, the modern clothing selection is smaller but still offers a great array of styles, and there’s denim and accessories a-​plenty!
Strapped for cash? Clean out your closets, and trade up! I love the Cash/​Credit/​Trade system here.
All I could ask is for is Spanx shapers, fishnets, and tights, and perhaps a Hefty’s Hideaway accoutrement of powdered donuts at the door… a girl can dream can’t she?

A must-​visit for the fatshionistas of the world! I am willing to fly, drive, or walk across the continental United States just to visit this store. If you are a plus-​sized woman who has ever dreaded clothes shopping or despaired of finding fashionable clothes that fit, you MUST visit Re/​Dress while in New York City. It is a mind-​blowing experience — a whole warehouse sized store dedicated to fatshionistas everywhere, of every stripe or persuasion. Whatever your style — Punk? Goth? Vintage? Funky? Conservative? Artsy? Re/​Dress probably has something in your size and style. No more being limited to overpriced, ill-​fitting blouses and trousers at Lane Bryant and Torrid.
Please open up a West Coast Re/​Dress soon — preferably in San Francisco!

I was so excited to come here!
There are some original clothing designs by locals or small design houses. Also, there are new clothing lines specifically for plus size. I enjoy shopping the used clothing, because it is currently and the prices are really low. The vintage items here are amazing, however they are out of my price range right now. I was so happy to find such a wonderful selection of winter jackets and coats in plus size that were not only affordable, but very stylish.
All of the clothing is sorted by category, such as; pants, skirts, dresses, jackets, etc. I would prefer them sorted by category and also by whether they are; used, vintage, new lines, or small house/​local designers.
The lounge area is pretty freaking awesome as well, it is a great place for people to wait around while you shop. The sales staff is super nice. The local designer section is really small, I would prefer to see more unique designs displayed.
I would love to see more locally owned plus size stores like this around the country. Maybe they should open more locations in the future.

If you have to take your girl shopping. I highly recommend here.
Comfy couches & seats, near a Starbucks and a Trader Joes.
If she wants to go and you’re not busy… just go.

This store was near the top of my list to visit when I went to NYC. Its not always easy to find cool, vintage stuff in normal sizes, and ReDress has nothing but. The shopgirls were really nice and I have to say that the soundtrack in the store is awesome!
While I didn’t find any clothes to bring home, I did pick up some cool hair accessories that one of the shopgirls makes herself.
I will definately be back!

Deb., the owner really knows her stuff, and makes this store as accommodating as they come.
The merchandise is wonderful, and you’ll find terrific deals on designer plus size apparel.
In addition there are full scale events at the store on a regular basis.
It’s a little known fact, that all smart, plus size, fashionistas shop here.

LOVE this store! Though I’m not spherical, I still err on the small side of plus… meaning around a size 14. I hate how small, cheap stores never have anything in my size. Re/​Dress turns the tables on this completely!
They have an amazing selection of goodies for the chuleta in you, from vintage pieces that err on gleefully tacky to modern, sleek pieces ideal for work. I picked up a lacy bolero for TWENTY DOLLARS. It was a new piece too… so for those who are terrified of bedbugs in vintage clothing, they have plenty of new selections.
Shoes are limited, but interesting. Employees are also really helpful.
What I liked most about the store was the selection of eclectic jewelry.
I beg you, Re/​Dress, PLEASE expand. I love your store but I don’t always want to trek out to Brooklyn!

Joined Unilocal this morning specifically to review my experience at Re/​Dress in Brooklyn; it’s just that amazing.
I’ve been a plus-​size gal my whole life, and have learned to accept that shopping typically means lugging a pile of garments into the fitting room, 50% of which won’t fit onto my body at all, 40% that fit… sort of, except for that pinch here and that bulge over there, and the blessed 10% that fit… mostly. Even within that 10%, there are caveats; this dress will look great IF I find the right cardigan, that top will work IF I get a different bra, etc.
My experience at Re/​Dress couldn’t have been more different. I went in hoping to find at least 2 dresses. I spent nearly an hour browsing, and narrowed my choices down to 20 items to try on. Out of the 20, easily 12 pieces were winners. TWELVE. What the hell?! From there, I had to narrow things down to fit within my budget. I wound up with 4 pieces; 2 day dresses, an evening dress, one AWESOME vintage wrap top.
I cannot wait to visit again next time I’m in New York. My endless trudging through malls is over… why would I need to shop anywhere else?

I spend an embarrassing amount of my free time in the store. I kind of can’t believe I’ve never reviewed it before. Luckily for me (and all of us!) every member of the Re/​Dress army is really welcoming. Re/​Dress is a great buy-​sell-​trade shop, and so much more.
Re/​Dress is a dream come true. They carry so many wonderful, unique, and fashionable pieces (both new-​with-​tags & gently used) in a variety of styles. Being game to try anything new/​anything suggested by the kick-​ass staff means that more often than not I go home with at least two or three great items — sometimes many more. I’ve tested new looks, I’ve bought more daring pieces. I look better than I have in years and it’s all thanks to shopping Re/​Dress.
By the by, Deb & her Magic Re/​Dress Army aren’t only running a shop. They’re also operating a center of awesome. The shop hosts readings, classes, workshops and more. Look, I could write you novels and it wouldn’t give you the full experience. Trust me, get on the train or in a car or take a walk and just GO. You’ll be so glad you did.
