I asked for a short bob w/burned tips. Pros: 1. Entertaining Nollywood films. I was totally IN in. 2. Easy, appointment walk-in. 3. I initially asked for a twisted bob, it looked terrible, super thin. She took it out and started with the box braids. So they care… I guess. 4. Hair included w/price was fair. But I’d suggest getting your own hair. That $ 1 hair can only last so long. Cons: 1. Lazy job. Initially I liked it, then I seen my hair in the light of day and realized how much she neglected to cut the stray hairs. 2. The smell coming from the bathroom gave me East River vibes. 3. I just called to see if Someone can fix the strays that she neglected. Her response, «if we’re still here». I’ll never go there again. Not for the smell. Not for the subpar job. Go to Yasmine’s on Tompkins :)

I showed up on a Saturday at 1145am and didn’t sit in a chair to to start my hair braiding until 2:45ish. They said the wait was only an hour. So she quoted me $ 80 over the phone and said the braid would be a little shorter. The braiider showed me the foirst braid and I saiid it was too short. So I said just another inch and she said it would be 110.00. I just said fine. She sent me to the beauty supply store to buy hair and said to mention Nene’s name, it was like 5 bucks a pack! They are in cahoots together, clearly. My uuurrrrkkked me the most is that my hair is natural and healthy. She was combing thru my hair, just yanking my hair. I kept saying PLEASEWETMYHAIR. No natural 4C, detanlges dry. She ignored me. They really suck, I wont go again. I really hate posting negative reviews, specially a black business. Beware if you are natural! Oh, lastly my hair was finished at 9:50 pm and I traveled there from Flushing Queens. :o(

So it hasn’t even been a month and my twists are slipping out and unraveling. I don’t care if they were doing them for a $ 1. I will never be back there.

This salon has been open for years! When I was a little kid my older sister would always get her hair braided here, I’m 20 now. Let me just say these women can braid! There’s two and they know exactly what they’re doing. I recently got my box braids done here, took about 3hrs. I didn’t even notice the time because I was so tuned into the African movies they have playing. I came around 5ish and didn’t start my hair until about 630. They were both working on someone when I arrived so I picked up food and waited. Not too bad. These ladies are really fast. My braids came out AMAZING! Beyond satisfied. She used a different type of hair than what I’m use to but I still love it. It’s much lighter and I can style it however I want. Be aware that they braid really tight. Which is good for me, but not so much for others. I paid $ 140, including hair. Might be cheaper if u bring ur own. I highly recommend this place! **NONEEDTOBOOKANAPPOINTMENT! Just walk in. First come first serve. 9am — 9pm

Box braids medium thickness, bob length: Actually the worst braiding job I’ve ever received. I asked for it to be full but the braids were really spaced out with big parts. After it was completed, I noticed the price sheet hidden away in the corner and realized I was also overcharged. I came back two day days after to have it fixed because it was so thin and my hair was already coming out the braids. I was initially greeted with unhappy attitudes and they thought my hair looked fine. They did«fix it» however by taking out some of the braids and redoing with smaller parts to add more body. This was excruciating painful. So much more than when I first got it done. Im Ghanaian and have been getting braids since I was a child and I know it hurts but this was ridiculous. My hair was also braided in ways that cause breakage. I have the hair in for a little less than two weeks and it looks I’ve had it in for 2 months. They were a bit friendly towards the end but that could be just because I was a disgruntled customer who still tipped generously. But it doesn’t matter how nice anyone is at a shop, a shitty braiding like this is not ok.

I came early on a Sunday to abide by the first come first serve policy. They took me within an hour which I guess isn’t bad for a braid shop, it was clean but prices aren’t clearly displayed. I’m giving the shop two stars based off of cleanliness alone. Otherwise I don’t evil mend going for two reasons. 1) today is Tuesday and the hair is raggedy and my stylist burned hair into the twist to give me the length I desired which are now falling out. Go here for maintenance if you have to and definitely do not use their hair. It’s horrible! Wish me luck for tomorrow I got to complain and get it redone. Oh and did I mention another customer came in to complain about her hair when my stylist was almost done with mine?

I walked in at about 9:10(shop opens at 9) and was immediately accommodated. Thank goodness I walked in at that particular moment because a customer who entered after me, was turned away. The shop is very small — no frills — but these ladies are fast. So I looked pass the cleanliness & décor. I opted for box braids(long) and was in & out in 3.5 Hrs flat. My hair looks great BUT I’m concerned about the braids lasting(due to how it is closed off). I may have to go back in with a lighter to prevent them from unraveling. I was quoted over the phone $ 80+ for box braids, I wound up paying $ 140 for braids that stop at the top of my hips.

Cosign to what everyone has said about quality and price at this place. That said, I really wanted to give 3.5 stars on account that the ladies PROMISED that I’d be out the door at a certain time bc I told them explicitly when I first arrived, before I sat in the chair, that if they can’t do it in the time frame I needed to be out the door, then let me know and I’ll come back another day. «No, no, definitely you have time,» was the response. An hour later after when I said I needed to be out the door, I’m still here. Quasi fuming. Lack of appreciation for my explicit time restraints is minus 1 star, and a -.5 for the lack of acknowledgement and/or apology that they were going to be behind my time constraints as we were getting close to my hard stop. Black girl salon problems or not– they should be honest with clients about time requirements. Salons have to make their money, but I’d respect the establishment more if they told me what I need to know instead of what they think I want to hear.

I loved my hair. I haven’t had box braids in 10 years and i love my hair so much that i look forward to coming back to NeNe at least twice a year. My biggest concern was maintaining my edges. I didn’t want it too tight to wear my edges would fall out. NeNe understood and took care of me. I got waist length medium sized box braids. I’m 5 ft tall they were to my butt. I took her about 6 hrs. She did a great job at making sure the braids and the ends were neat. They play really good African movies and the staff was pleasant. I came with my hair washed, deep conditioned and blow dried prior to getting them installed. I received so many compliments. Definitely a fan. I had them in for 5 weeks before removing them to wash my hair. Not one of them came out. Great job. She did the braids in my profile picture.

I recently(as of 3 weeks ago. wow already!) had the pleasure of getting my hair braided by NeNe! I was on vacation staying at a friend’s place who lives in Brooklyn. She was so kind to find me this lovely hair spot. I was going on a cruise and wanted to get my hair braided so that I could get my hair box braided like Janet Jackson in «Poetic Justice» The night before, my friend and I picked out the hair at a beauty hair supply. I had dark hair with some pink hair for fun. Nene’s shop opened at 9AM. I got there about 8:45 because I wanted to be in there early and out early. Once the door opened she greeted me with a warm smile and had me come on in and sit down. She chatted with me for a few minutes to find out what i wanted my hair like. The hair i got was 22 inches. I am 5 feet tall, and that is just too long. We agreed on a 16 inch length and i told her I wanted dark hair with pink highlights.
Nene was so kind, but she was all business as well. She got to work and it took about 5 hours to do. She has other ladies that came in as well and for a small little place, the customers still kept coming in and out. They do a variety of styles and the service is very nice. I loved my hair when i got finished. Everyone has complimented me on it. I will say, the braids were tight, but I don’t want them loose or falling out. Usually they stay for 3 months and I want them to stay for 3 months. I had no place to be after I got my hair braided. I put some Olive oil on my scalp and took a Tylenol and then I was fine. You know what they say«Beauty Costs». You know, when you get your hair braided, your scalp will be a bit sore from all the pulling. Just know that’s what it takes to have nice braids. I was not hurt at all during the braiding process not one time. Heck, I even fell asleep in the chair. Everyone is different on pain, so just know before you go.
My braids were reasonable priced, the service was fantastic! I will come back again when I am in town. Thank you so much Nene! I will see you next year for something new and fun!

I’ve gone to Nene’s three times now to get braids/twist extensions installed. These ladies move quickly and do a great job. My hair is always neat and never once has a braid or twist fallen out. The braiding process goes by faster when 2 – 3 women are working on your head simultaneously — but it can get painful. I’ve experienced nothing but professionalism from these ladies and will continue to go here for my hair braiding/twisting needs as long as I’m in Brooklyn.

This is my hair braiding salon of choice. I have sent friends there and they never disappoint. I also love watching the Nollywood movies lol. But pretty clean, I wouldn’t eat off the floors or anything. Very quick and efficient. I waked in ester day to get small box braids. Sat down at 12:30 was out by 4 o clock. And I have ALOT of hair. Three women worked on my head to get me out. My main braider was actually pretty kind and concerned. As long as I’m in Brooklyn these will be my preferred braiders.
