Khamit Kinks

I have been coming to Khamit Kinks for years. I like the salon and I like my stylist’s work. I have never had any major issues.
This weekend, I had an appointment at 4pm on Saturday. I waited a month for this appointment. Two hours before my appointment, the salon called and said my stylist was sick and had to cancel. I asked when the sylist’s next appt is: it is July 23^rd — almost 2 months later. They said they would give the stylist my number and the stylist would let me know if he can accommodate me any time sooner. A few days later, I haven’t heard from anyone.
Per their website, «If we receive no cancellation from you 48-​hours in advance of your appointment we charge 50% of the service.» This is reasonable. I do not think it is reasonable that they cancel 2 hours in advance and tell me I have to wait almost two months for my service and not offer any type of discount. I did not appreciate how this was handled.

The 2 stars are attributed to the following: My stylist, Nereshte was the best part of my experience. She was helpful and did a good job providing the services. The salon is nice and has a good vibe! I was there from 11am-​2pm. My issue with Khamit Kinks is that they are uncomfortably overpriced. There was also some inconsistencies with what I was told I was receiving vs what I paid for. This ultimately led to the receptionists throwing my stylist under the bus. I received a trim ($ 65) that’s a lot right?, deep conditioning ($ 35), and then a wet & wear/​Aphrodite which is when the stylist puts product in your hair, you sit under the dryer for 10mins and then you get diffused for 5−7mins. This «styling» cost ($ 65). I had a real problem with this price point because while I was please with my hair it looks like it does when I do it. I had no idea it would cost $ 65! I would have opted for no style at all. Upon arrival I was told that the Aphrodite was an intricate finger styling and my stylist actually didn’t recommend it so I opted for a simple wet and wear which I was led to believe was something different and assumed would be at a lower price point. It wasn’t until after I was finished that I learned my wet and wear and Aphrodite were the same and that my stylist was «wrong». I ended up paying $ 65 to look like I did my own hair in additional to the trim and the treatment. If you go, get the prices up front. I feel like I was flimflammed. Hair looks nice and healthy but definitely not worth the $ 172.00 I paid. I’d go back but only for an intricate/​sophisticated styling which I think is their specialty.

I’m in town visiting from Georgia. My stylist Regina was excellent. She took great care of my hair and told me the honest truth. No, a trim would not be sufficient for my hair and that I needed a cut. Received deep treatment and steam care. I also purchased some products that were used on my hair so I can better take care of it.
The atmosphere is great here and very spacious. If you ate in town I recommend you to stop by.

This was my first visit to Khamit Kinks. I got a cut/​trim by Andre and he was AWESOME! He made my natural curls look amazing! Great environment! Friendly receptionists! Clean shop! It was a good experience! I definently recommend this salon!

Disappointed. My first impression of this place was that it had a nice atmosphere, and the receptionist was friendly enough. And even though my appointment was for 3:30 and I didn’t get seen until 5:00, that still didn’t even dampen my mood — I’m a patient person and I completely understand that people get backed up. I have a customer service job myself so i know how it can be. So i was totally cool. Even the receptionist thanked me for being so patient.
I was finally seen by my stylist, Andre, who at first was welcoming and engaging and made me feel comfortable (I was getting my locs cut completely off after 6 years so I was slightly apprehensive). But like I said, at first I felt comfortable.
Now after he finished cutting off my locs, that’s when he decides to tell me «I’m not sure if you’re aware, but it’s gonna be $ 175 total.» Never mind the fact that I was told over the phone countless times that it would only be $ 75 for a cut and wash. Now all of a sudden, I’m being told it would be $ 75 to cut the locs and then another $ 100 to trim and style. Even if that’s your policy, so be it, but don’t wait until AFTER you cut my hair off to confirm this. Not to mention I specifically told him I didn’t want it to be styled. Not only that, after he cut my hair there was barely anything to style! So basically, I would have paid another $ 100 just for the 3-​minute trim? Negative. Thankfully, the manager was much more amicable and told me that they would «waive the fee this time» (even though I still don’t quite understand why there was an extra $ 100 fee to begin with — AGAIN, I told him I didn’t want a style, just a wash and go). So truthfully, I shouldn’t have felt like I was being done any favors. Even if it would have been an extra $ 10 – 20 for the trim, I would have understood that, but not $ 75-​$ 100. It was no where near that serious.
To top it off, after that exchange with the manager, Andre completely switched gears. He became indifferent and standoffish. I would try to make conversation with him and ask him simple questions and would literally get ignored. Maybe he didn’t hear me, I think to myself, so I repeat myself and he actually says «I heard you.» At that point I asked him if he was okay. I mean, what exactly was the problem? I certainly didn’t do anything to him. And it wasn’t even as if my conversation with the manager was negative — i simply told her what i was told over the phone to which she responded she would waive the fee for me… I told her i appreciated it and that was it. A rather pleasant exchange in fact, so why Andre became cold is seriously beyond me. I wasn’t one of those problematic customers who thinks they’re always right and likes to make a scene. I didn’t owe him any apologies, if anything it should have been the other way around since I waited over an hour to be seen and there was a miscommunication about pricing.
Lastly, when it comes to the quality of my hairdo, i was not 100% satisfied (it was cut much shorter than i think it needed to be) BUT I have sense enough to know that I’m not the professional, so i did not even complain about that. All i did was request that you leave as much as you could… after all it’s still my hair not yours, i should have some say, no? But again when i asked i was completely ignored until i specifically asked if you heard me and it turns out you did. So why you didn’t respond is anyone’s guess i suppose? Smh. Overall, Andre, please know the difference between when you should have an attitude and when you shouldn’t. I was completely patient and understanding the whole time I was there and you made me feel like I did something to you when I did not. I could’ve even walked out of there without tipping you but once again, I’m not that grumpy. But I do feel like I had to write this review because the service you gave was highly unfair and maybe it’ll help someone else avoid that kind of embarrassment. You didn’t do me any favors, so hop off your high horse.

Great experience. No one handles my natural hair like Regina. If I could handle it myself, I’d want to do it like Regina. Thank you, Khamit Kinks.

I am so in love with my Senegalese twists! I’ve been wanting to get twists for a while and am going on vacation so figured this was the perfect time. I am so happy I decided to come to Khamit Kinks. Anta and Fatou were so wonderful to work with — kind, knowledgable, patient, understanding and put the health of my hair as their number one priority. Also, I’m very tender headed so was concerned about the pulling on my scalp — this was not a problem at all and they continued to check in to make sure. My experience was just fantastic from start to finish. Thank you Khamit Kinks!

This was my second time here and my experience was traumatic and horrible. I wanted a tapered cut. More on top sides low. My appointment was for 5. I wasn’t seen till 6:10. No one apologized till about 45 mins after 5 said he was running behind with another client. I really wanted this haircut and I trusted this salon so I waited with my 5 yr old daughter. When I was finally seen I felt like I was rushed. 1 wash, 5 mins under dryer. Then he started cutting. Didn’t explain anything. Well I got a big chop. My hair had some damaged ends. But not one that warranted how low he cut my hair. Not a tapered look. And on top of that someone came out and asked me if I had headphones for my phone for my daughter. Really? A lot of people warned me about going to this salon but I didn’t listen. My hair honestly looked horrible it looked extremely dry. No products in my hair, no twist out or anything. I did that myself when I got home. For a whopping $ 104. I was so disappointed. I don’t mind paying money as long as I get what I was paying for. Now when people ask where I should go for natural. I will say definitely not Khamit kinks.
To Khamit kinks. Your ‘if you are not happy oh well, we’re going to get business regardless’ attitude disgusts me. I will never come back here again. And I will never recommend this place again. My trust in black salons were already low. But you have taken the little bit I had completely away. Thanks

The salon is pretty clean but my gripe is the lack of knowledge of natural hair. I don’t think they offer any advice for naturals unless you inquire amd still it’s a bit unanswered. I miss Jen that cut my hair I heard she moved away. I recently got a trim and I had to tell Regina to put hear protectant before she proceeded to blow dry to trim. Upon looking it was just a leave in. I was agitated non the less but didn’t say anything because I don’t like to complain. She cut pretty well but left a lot of product to which the manager had to tell her to sponge it out. the deep down under conditioner was just OK nothing special. I think they should have more sales instead of just black Friday and 15% off on birthday. Sucks bec I’m due for a trim in Feb n my birthday is in January.

I have never had a worse experience at a hair salon. It was bad in my and their opinion because without me having to go crazy, they comped my appointment. I’m not usually one to go to the salon, I’m a YouTube university grad, but I can’t cut my own hair so I decided to try this place out. Worse decision!!!
To start off the receptionist and woman who does the consultations are nice and professional, if not a bit dismissive. That’s the only positive thing I have to say about this place.
What is the point of a consultation? You attend a consultation in order to discuss and figure out what you want done to your hair. As a new client, they REQUIRE you to attend this $ 50 appointment. That was fine, after my consultation I felt confident that I would be happy with the style and color we discussed. (We had a plan figured out, we did a skin test for the dye and everything.)
I get to the appointment and had to wait for 45 min, I brushed that off because people are busy, I was annoyed but whatever. Then some dude just walks up to me and is like «let’s go.» Uh okay ‘hi to you too sir.’ So we get to his chair and he asked what I wanted. I figure he just wanted to confirm what was said during the consultation so I told him I wanted a specific color and the damaged hair cut.
This dude went to town on my hair. I’d say the damaged hair was about 2 – 3 inches long and he cut off at least 5. And he went in so deep on the first cut that I didn’t get a chance to ask him not to cut so short. After the first snip, my hair was down to a couple centimeters long on the side. When I asked about it he said he thought I wanted it’s at short. (Maybe he confused me with someone else)
At this point I should have asked him to stop and talked about the consultation but I didn’t. So he cuts and we get to the color portion, and he asked what color I wanted, I told him the specific color I discussion with the woman in the consultation. He said they were out. I then said «Okay well what are some alternatives?» His response was «Anything but that color…» Okay?! (If they knew I was coming for a a specific color that was discussed in the required consultation why didn’t they have it the day of my appointment???) At this point I was beyond pissed off!
Since they didn’t have the color I wanted, I stated that I wanted get as closely to the purplish/​red color I had originally requested without the use of bleach (as discussed in the MANDATORY consultation). He said okay!
GUESS WHO BLEACHED MY HAIR!!! Not only did he bleach it, he put it on then left for 20 minutes and I had to ask one of the other stylist to find him so he could rinse my hair.
At this point the lady from my consultation came back from lunch and, initially, didn’t recognize me. When I explained what was supposed to happen she kind of ‘had a talk’ with my stylist and tried to talk me down. At this point, so fed up, I told them to re-​dye my hair black and that I would leave. She tried to talk me down about how it didn’t look bad and asked if they could fix it but I didn’t want them even looking at me, let alone touching my hair. (Also when I got home I realized that my roots and edges were still white from the bleach and there were patched of brown where he didn’t let the black sit in my hair long enough)
All this to say, the service and experience at Khamit kinks was the worse. If you want people to listen and care for your hair, I say avoid this place.

Beauticians were nice. However I had a long wait, they took forever. Even though I purchased a Unilocal voucher, I thought it was an okay experience, but not worth the price.

I’ve been natural for about 2 years and you would think I know anything about anything but I don’t…I have some clue but not a lot so I thought maybe going to a salon especially one that specialize in natural hair would help me but sadly I left a bit underwhelm I would even go as far as disappointed. *I should note that this is my first salon experience since becoming natural*
Let’s start from the beginning I wanted to get a trim and did some searching online and found this salon so I tried using their website and saw all about consultations, style etc but their website kept crashing for some reason so I just decided to give a call.
Called in and the receptionist was pretty helpful she answered all my questions I had at the time and let me know about pricing. She also said that there was a deposit that needed to be put down in order to confirm the appointment and that I could do it over the phone or come in.
Being the highly skeptical person that I am I was like might as well go in… so a day later I come in to make the deposit and ask a few more questions. My friend and I come in and the person at the reception desk is seated we tell her what were there for and try to ask questions but she stayed seated and we can’t hear her… thankfully someone else comes up on their way out and give us some more info and answer our questions.
I make the appointment (deciding to only go for the trim) and was ready for it. Your hair has to be able to make a comb pass through it so there was that. I get there ready and excited. I WAS EXPECTING AN EXPERIENCE My stylist was Kanye? at least that what I thought she said led me to the back area where she washed my hair (nothing special) and put me under the dryer. Then she lead me to her station where she proceed to blow dry my hair then trimmed it and that it. NOTHING ELSE. I understood from the very beginning that you have to pay extra for styling but that not what I was looking for.
I wanted to know what product did she use… did she have any recommendations on things I should be doing for my hair anything that her salon sell that will help me along my journey. ANYTHING REALLY I was surprised that none of this was done… maybe I’m to use to the Dominican salons where they tell you that your hair is dry and you need a deep conditioner and to use this crème or that.
I went to go pay and the receptionist was having a convo with someone there but I didn’t really care about that she did apply the 15% off for mentioning Unilocal which was cool. The only thing I was surprised about was that they don’t have a option to tip on your card… which I guess is my fault for not asking.
I don’t carry cash around for personal reason but I felt a bit bad that I wasn’t able to tip my stylist if I’m in the area again I will go back and give it to her.
Will I come back here in the future… probably not.

I had a visit there a few weeks ago for hair color. I had a picture and everything and my hair came out NOTHING like the picture I showed the stylist and the manager.
I admit, I’m fully natural with a full head of hair and bra strap length. Some stylists find it hard to manage hence why I do my own hair. But I did want to have «professionals» color my hair. They showed me how the color was supposed to come out using the color wheel. I wanted dark red roots and fire red tips as indicated in the picture. I ended up with fire red roots and orange tips. How am I supposed to start my new job with this mess. Turns out they didn’t have enough color for the amount of hair I had, nor did they have the exact colors they showed me on the color wheel because I would have definitely opposed to orange.
So what’s done is done. Come to find my «colorist» is not experienced with color as she had to have her manager help her. To top it off, I had to leave with NY hair damp and unstyled because she did not do a deep condition and was ready to style me with a wash and go… That is a NO NO. So I left and did my own deep condish and style at home. Never going back.

I highly recommend trying out this salon. My stylist was Fatou for two-​strand twists and she was excellent. She was thorough, efficient and very friendly. I love the décor of the salon and the overall professionalism. I steered clear for a while because of the price but honestly it is worth the price considering that they charge market value. My twists lasted me a month. Give them a try you won’t regret it.

For as much as a service costs in this shop, the setting could be much nicer, much cleaner and cozier.
I came here for a color service. I wanted Khamit Kinks because I have natural hair and wanted to go to someplace reputable. The color came out ok (more orange than the lighter brown I asked for) but I’m certain had I not gotten up and walked around looking for my stylist when I did, she would have forgotten I was there (as she started getting her own hair braided.)
Not impressed.

I went here for my first professional trim since being natural (almost 2 years). I had an extremely positive experience. Saniyyah was my stylist. She has a very warm personality. She was caring and patient with my hair, and I felt 100% comfortable with her blow drying and cutting my hair. My fro now has the exact shape that I was looking for.
I found my new stylist! Looking forward to my next visit.

Yay, I think I’ve found my salon!
I was a long time client of Turning Heads in Harlem. They took me through a lot of iterations of hairstyles (relaxed, natural, braids) and after they closed, I was lost in a vast wasteland of African-​American haircare options.
My hair is natural and was in desperate need of a haircut, so I did a search on Unilocal and was impressed with the reviews of Khamit Kinks. Plus, the salon was offering a 15% new client discount for mentioning Unilocal.So, I decided to give it a shot.
The salon is conveniently located and very well maintained. I visited Khamit Kinks’ website before my appointment, so I had an idea of the style I wanted. My stylist, «Doc», did a wonderful job. He gave me a precision haircut, hot oil treatment and replicated the «Afrodite» style from the website to a tee. My hair feels soft and healthy and I feel confident in my ability to maintain the style.
I will be back. Solid 4 – 4.5 stars – great job!

From the time my phone call was taken, I was treated very well! The receptionist was very courteous and informative regarding the issues I’ve been experiencing, gave me a few options and encouraged me to come in so that my hair could be accessed.
I went to the Salon a few days later and I was greeted and treated with at tremendous amount of professionalism. The salon was very clean with a lovely ambience. The technicians were very honest about my hair situation, explained the loc extension process extensively! I left feel very confident and will definitely return to go forward with the extension process!

Let me start off by saying Khamit Kinks does excellent work. My daughter has had her locs groomed and styled, and I’ve had flat twists done. Our hair always turns out beautifully. A weekend evening visit turned out to be an insanely long wait once, but I can forgive that. Quality of their work is excellent.
My problem lies in their business ethic. I find their price for loc grooming is more than fair. Flat twists are expensive, but I’m willing to pay more for quality. My issue is this. They hike up the prices without a legitimate reason. After emailing a picture of my style and having it done the exact same way twice, I was told the price was being raised by a whopping 40% for my next visit. When I asked why, I was told first, «Because that’s what the computer says.». Me not being the type of person to accept a ridiculous answer like that I pressed some more. I was told I received a 10% discount before. I informed her 10% of he price isn’t $ 50 off. Being that she had no other lines to throw me she said, «I don’t know why. It’ll just be more.». I informed her I wouldn’t get my hair done there anymore and she said, «Okay.».
So now, I call to make an appt for my daughter. From her first ever visits, yol her last visit, an appointment was made with no problems. Today I’m told a picture must be emailed to see how much time is needed for her hair because it’s been a few months since her last visit. I asked why this was their policy suddenly and was told it’s always been this way. Once again, I had to let the rep know I’m not an idiot and to please stop the shenanigans. She persisted. Being that I knew this was all a bunch of BS, I played with her and said, «Actually she had her hair done in July. Just not with you guys.». I was put on hold, and not surprisingly, I was told that NOW it was because it wasn’t specifically with khamit kinks a photo had to be emailed.
I immediately asked to speak to the manager. She politely gave me another load of nonsense. The bottom line is I don’t mind paying. Just be upfront and leave the shenanigans out of it. It’s a major turn off and very unprofessional when my intelligence is insulted in an attempt to squeeze more money out of me. I guess Khamit Kinks feels they have such a big name that they can do what they want. Not with me they can’t. I will find a good quality salon that is straight forward and fair with their pricing.

My experience at Khamit Kinks was phenomenal from setting up my appointment to the finished product.
I was ready to make the transition to natural hair and I needed a good stylist to assist. I read a bunch of reviews on Unilocal and I finally decided on Khamit Kinks. I emailed in some pictures of tentative styles and I received a timely response from Melody who gave me a quote for the styles I was interested in. I also explained that I was ready for the big chop and would like a stylist who is savvy and experienced in that area. So she set up an appointment with Andre.
The salon is a very spacious venue — easily accessible from various trains. It has a nice chic décor and a tranquil environment (nothing like the ghetto superstar salons where there are 49 374 926 conversations occurring at the maximum volume). Everyone is very friendly and has a smile on their face. While waiting for your appointment, you have the option of complimentary tea or water. And there he was; Andre, my stylist.
I’ve never been apprehensive of having short hair because I’ve rocked a permed short cut for the past three years. I was nervous that some of the styles I was interested in might not suit me. So I put all my faith in Andre. I told him I was tired of chemicals and I needed something that would suit my face. He said «Got it», and my transition began. Andre himself is a very personable stylist who makes you feel comfortable enough to crack jokes or even talk about your personal life. It was definitely cool talking with him about his journey and how he got to where he was. Asides from being a great stylist, he is definitely a down to earth person which only made the whole experience go alot smoother.
He explained everything he was going to do before he did it. It definitely wasn’t a situation of the crazed scissor happy stylist (which im sure we have encountered at some point in time). Everything flowed well. No extended periods of just sitting around. In under two hours, I was in and out; which is rare these days.
After Andre was finished with my hair, he gave me a much needed beginner’s crash course on how to care for and style my natural hair. Overall, a 5 star experience with a 5 star stylist.
