I remember back in the day, I went to my brother for advice. He was all like, «For that you gotta go into the city.» I didn’t want to, but he insisted«No, it’s all about B&H or J&R. Straight photographer ToysRus.» Walking up Flatbush, what do I find? J&D Image, and I’m all ready to store this in the grudge-section of my brain, and boast that I found his precious J&D(which like I said was really J&R) right in our barrio. Then I smelt the curry. No, you don’t go to J&D for the image, which is good because it sure doesn’t look like much. You go for the cheap Trini take-out cuisine. The doubles are the best that I know of for blocks, and the roti is competitive with some of the neighbors. Like I’ve said in other reviews, you might not want to try the mauby drink, but I’m always a sorrel fan.

Best West Indian food I’ve had in(my limited travels around) the neighborhood. Had a «doubles,» savory chickpea stew in a soft flatbread, and a «fry bake with salt fish,» flaked fish and veggies in a puffy bread bun. Both absolutely amazing, $ 3.50 total. If you’ve never had West Indian food, just drop by and start pointing at things off the menu… you won’t be disappointed!

I’d been eyeballing this walk-up Trini joint for about a year, much to my girlfriend’s chagrin. Since it’s next door to Blockbuster, I’d always try to peep the menu through the window on the way past. There’d always be a line out the door and the prices looked cheap, so I was intrigued. Luckily, she flew home and was never seen again, so I got to finally eat my J&D! This place puts a great roti together with curried chicken, channa, and potatoes. Always get the hot sauce, pussy! I’ve grabbed an aloo pie from here, and was surprized to get a cruller stuffed with a tart, yellow potato curry. Plenty of stuff like plantains, okra, oxtail, and mysterious saltfish for the adventurous and stolid alike. Did I mention it was cheap? Oh, and my girlfriend came back. She still thinks roti are«glorified knishes.» Irie!
