Hong Kong Supermarket of Brooklyn

A newly converted New York Mart has replaced the Hong Kong Supermarket on the same site as of 2013.

The name is change but still the same sign which is kinda weird but whatever… So much cleaner and neater then before everything is at the write spot. Doesn’t smell like hard core fish which is awesome! There are some cheap finds daily which I like! Bought yummy Japanese ice cream for five bucks! Haven’t find four favor in one box for the longest time so happy to be finding it here! The only problem would be how there no heat in the supermarket the outside is just as cold as the inside and when I was pushing the shopping cart there was no room to push just cause this place was just that crowed. Not really a fun time but at the same time like the new arrangement really please about that!

The name has changed, but the signage still shows Hong Kong Supermarket… but they still sell typical chinese groceries with free 2−3hr parking… something that’s seriously hard to come by in 8^th Ave Chinatown in BK. You can get everything you need in one fell swoop under one roof if you drive… live perishables, frozen food, off-​the-​shelf sauces, packaged food, candy, snacks, it’s up to you. Time hasn’t been kind to them as competition has increased with nearby and new stores like Fei Long and Great Wall several blocks away. They’ve done some renovations to change for the better but I’d like to see HK up their game to stay on top since they have a great location.

This place isn’t HK Supermarket anymore. They remodeled the store and it isnt gross and smelly like it was before. They also label the aisle so you dont have to walk down each aisle to search for a product. Usually in Asian markets, they don’t mark/​label the aisles.

Woo! Now that I’ve discovered this place, I’ve realized I don’t need to trek all the way into Manhattan for all of my Asian food supplies! Soon, I will be returning here to buy a giant bag of jasmine rice!
The grocery section is extensive — really, it’s got everything you could possibly want in this shopping category — noodles, sauces, spices, candies, you name it. The prices are pretty decent.
However, the fruits and veggies looked just OK, and I have to say, I don’t think I’d buy anything at the meats and seafood section… it just didn’t look very hygenic, and there was a distinct non-​fresh odor in that area. Like others, I also have mixed feelings about the vat of live frogs sitting on the floor. (Awesome! Check that out! But… where are they coming from? Aren’t they threatened, as a species? Hmm.)
However, they also have the aisle of «Houseware, Kitchenware, Diaper and Godly Tribute.» How can you pass up that selection?!

Does not carry the products it boasts to online. When you get there the staff is rude and unhelpful. They tell you they do not have products they are standing in front of. Produce is not that fresh and it is dirty. I used to shop here with my parents all the time but the quality of the place has eroded.
Make some changes — you used to be great!

I’d like to say I’ve made it to Vietnam and China and back every time I go to Sunset Park.
Anyway, Hong Kong Supermarket is, well, as you would guess, a huge Chinese supermarket catering to the Chinese, Vietnamese and SE Asian community in BK. I mean, it’s facination and amazement down every aisle. Everything is so interesting to the non-​Chinese (though still Asian) eyes — mine anyway. I mean, half the shit there is probably illegal — turtles, frogs and tortoises oh my. Ok, maybe not necessarily illegal but definitely questionable.
The sad thing is, I really needed Korean ingredients, but Korean ingredient I couldn’t find much. Alas, Chinese replacements had to do.
If you go here and you need help finding things though, be prepared to use a lot of miming and gibberish sign language — barely any of the staff speaks English.

In the interest of full disclosure, I worked here when I was in high school many years ago. It’s definitely taken a turn for the worse since then. Really, ever since Great Wall opened about half a decade ago, followed by Fei Long flexing its muscle and extending its presence, Hong Kong Supermarket has struggled to keep up. Produce isn’t as fresh, the place isn’t as clean, and the aisles are too narrow. I’ll always have a soft spot for the place, but the only thing it’s good for is the occasional cheap meat, cooking sauces, junk food and the parking lot.

They have everything I need! Especially when the sesame Popsicles were in stock. I was über happy!

Great! I went just before sundown on a Saturday, and it wasn’t too packed at all. The produce wasn’t the freshest stuff I’ve ever seen for sale, and I couldn’t find kaffir lime leaves anywhere, but I got everything else on my list, and then some. Some of the signs above the produce are in English, but many aren’t, so make sure you really know which green leafy thing you want before you go, if you don’t read Chinese.
Regarding the deathly fish smell — I didn’t smell anything too heinous, but my boyfriend did. But I’m a vegetarian and didn’t get too up close and personal with the meat section, so, who knows.
I’m definitely planning on coming back. Cheap prices, lots of selection, less chaos than Canal/​Hester St, a quick bus ride from my apartment — I think we’ve found a winner.

When the Chef in me takes over, I head to this supermarket for particular ingredients. For instance:
— Pad Thai sauce when I feel like making Pad Thai
— Red pepper paste, Red pepper flake, Black bean sauce when I’m in the Korean phase.
— Avocado when I want to make guacamole or California roll and the other markets don’t sell them.
— Sushi vinegar when I’m lazy to mix a few simple ingredients together.
If you want variety, this supermarket has Korean, Japanese, Thai, and many other hard to find ingredients. For all others like seafood, poultry, produce, I would head to other mini markets in the area that are fresher.

If you have ever been to Brooklyn’s Chinatown or any other Chinatown (Flushing/​Manhattan) you’ll realized how hard it is to find parking. Let’s just say parking is practically impossible!!!
Hence this is why I shop here all the time. I love the idea that I can just drive in, pick up what I need and then drive off. It’s quick, fast, and easy (muah)!!!
Their stuff here are not bad, typical asian products (I guess), nothing special. But since it is a supermarket, they generally have all the items I would need in order to whip up a dish that even my mom or better yet, my great, great, great grandmother would be proud of. They asian products are the real deal.
All in all, if you have a car, go here! The convenience is great, if you don’t’ have a car then it’s just another typical Asian market.

This place use to be perfect for food shopping. and it was also slightly more pricer than the supermarkets at 8^th Ave… but its the giant supermarket that gets you excited…
However this has changed throughout the years, more supermarktes opened up and business has been affected. Furthermore, it has changed quite a bite inside… not as popular as it use to be. but would come here once in a while for certain items that is only available here. like my favorite childhood snacks from China… XD

Don’t go here much anymore. Prices are a bit expensive in comparison to their other competitors that are basically within 5 blocks. Fei Long is the new HK supermarket… cheaper prices, more products. HK has a parking lot which is good. Annoying though at times since you have to go get the ticket and get it stamped. They have samples there which is good. Overall, okay, but I rather go check out Fei Long or GreatWall.

I always found this supermarket expensive. The produce doesn’t look fresh and this supermarket is not crowded at all. They have been there for a long time; I hope business isn’t that bad for them. They installed a new drive through, which I find kind of pointless and dangerous too! I was walking passed it because I saw it up and then all of a sudden it was coming back down, good thing I saw it fast enough and ran out of the way or else I would have been with the ground.

Hot digity these prices are cheaper than the prices in Chinatown (Manhattan).
However — buyer-​beware. This is a low-​down old school supermarket. While the cashiers inside have a digital scanner, in the traditions of (frugal) Chinese people who considers it a sin to waste food — you may find fruits and vegetables that are too ripe to eat bordering on its way to rotten. At first glance — 39 cents/​lb for broccoli seemed like a steal until I got a closer look and noticed how yellow they were turning.
Also, while the prices are cheap I’m sure there’s some sort of health code violation or something to have exposed meat (chicken) simply lying there at waist level. Just notice the flies buzzing about could be enough to make anyone squimish walk away or not to come back.
That said, I’m still giving 4 stars cuz the prices and free parking is da-​bomb. Just check the expiration date before you check out and the fruit/​veggies you buy outside is good.

If you’ve been to a Chinese supermarket before, you pretty much know what to expect with Hong Kong Supermarket. I prefer it to the ones in Manhattan because Sunset Park is a lot more laid-​back than Canal Street, and the ones in Queens because that’s just too far away for casual shopping.
They get points for their selection (half an aisle dedicated just for ramen) and prices (as good as the street vendors along 8^th Avenue), but the quality of their produce can be a little iffy at times – of course, you can decide for yourself just how iffy. Some awesome finds include:
Fancypants Korean ramen (baked, not fried) for 99 cents;
Baby bok choy for something like a buck per pound;
A bag of shallots for what came out to about two bucks a pound (though not the freshest shallots you’ll see); and
Frozen veggie dumplings at six for $ 1.50.

I love visiting the ethnic foods sections in big-​chain supermarkets whenever I get the chance. It’s even better when I come to an authentic one in an authentic neighborhood.
Even though I’m Chinese, most of these foods, novelty items, and knick-​knacks rest within the periphery of what I’m familiar with. It’s like a museum! And even better when you’re with someone special. I usually like going to these places with my Russian BFF, gawking at the cool stuff and low prices.
I used to go grocery shopping here and other neighboring grocery places with my aunt and uncle when I was younger on Friday afternoons with the car. Cheap prices and fresh foods are hard to beat. My favorite acquisitions were the Red Bean or Green Bean popsicle bars.

This store has a nice variety of DIFFERENT asian foods, not just chinese. I was able to find thai staple ingredients and a larger amount of malay and filipino products as well.
Prices are generally cheaper than nearby large chinese supermarkets, but they all compete making for cheap and interesting specials.
They do offer a parking lot for those who drive. For train riders it is steps from the N train 8^th ave stop. There are also 2 buses that stop within a block of here.

I love this supermarket because I could find almost everything I want for my Chinese appetite~~ Even if I have to take Q and then transfer to N, spending about an hour to get to this Shopping Heaven~
