Garden Acupuncture offers Traditional Chinese Medicine which includes acupuncture, herbs and nutrition as well as many adjunct therapies such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion and electric stimulation.

Our office specializes in Fertility, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Allergies, Weight Loss, Pain Conditions, Stress & Sleep Issues among other health concerns.

We have studied in China, where acupuncture originated. We have intensive training in infertility and nutritional therapy and acupuncture has shown to increase IVF & IUI success rates. The combination of our education, experience, numerous therapies and gentle techniques ensure the most effective and efficient treatments for you and your family.

Other services offered and health issues resolved through our practice are digestive complaints, chronic fatigue, gynecological disorders, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, migraines, smoking cessation and cosmetic acupuncture procedures.

History

Established in 2010.

Partners in business and in life, co-​founders Alex Goldberg and Lisa Metzger opened Garden Acupuncture in 2010 with the shared vision of offering high quality, authentic Traditional Chinese Medicine to their community in Park Slope and surrounding areas of Brooklyn and New York City. Today their vision is a reality. By making this ancient wisdom easily available through convenient hours and participation in insurance, the over 40+ years of combined clinical experience within the practice is shared in one-​on-​one, personalized visits by their Nationally Board Certified practitioners. Having had the privilege of touching the lives of so many and being humbled by the success of their patients, the whole team at Garden Acupuncture is dedicated and excited to continue offering their services and helping people achieve their health goals.

Lisa M.

Business Owner

Lisa Metzger, Co-​Founder of Garden Acupuncture, attended Ohio University and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

Her Professional Masters degree in Acupuncture was obtained at the American Institute of Alternative Medicine (AIAM), in Columbus, Ohio. Lisa attributes her exceptional educational experience to her Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Professors, all of whom are doctors of oriental medicine and have practiced in China prior to teaching at AIAM. She herself has studied abroad in Beijing, China. Her clinical experience from Guang An Men Teaching Hospital was invaluable to understanding and practicing acupuncture.

Lisa’s continuing education has included Master Tung’s Acupuncture, which focuses on using minimal points with extremely effective results. She has learned nutritional therapy under Paul Pitchford, author of «Healing with Whole Foods.» She has also deeply studied the treatment of asthma and allergies.

I first met Alex when I was almost 41 weeks pregnant and trying to avoid being induced. He fit me in last minute and was incredibly kind, funny and knowledgeable. I went into labor that night. Recently, I have been seeing him under more normal circumstances and have been thrilled to see that he brings the same level of care, kindness and expertise to every appointment. The place is spotless and tastefully decorated and the staff are always friendly and efficient. I highly recommend this place!

There are many options for acupuncture in NYC, ranging from clinical to woo-​woo, and Garden Acupuncture strikes a nice balance. Their offices are super clean, comfortable, and high-​end: think heated tables, new-​agey music, relaxing lighting. They take many insurances and will take care of the billing if they’re in-​network with your plan, which is huge. The receptionists are really sweet, always have a smile and a nice word, and you can easily make appointments online.
I’ve mostly seen Alex, and he is very competent and effective. He likes to joke around, which is nice, and is good at making you feel relaxed. He also remembers every detail about your life, like where you’re about to go on vacation and with whom. Impressive, for someone who sees as many clients as he does!
I’ve also seen Juliet, who is equally competent and very warm and sweet. I always feel like I’m in good hands with whoever treats me here.
Garden Acupuncture is a successful, very busy facility, and sometimes their treatments can feel a bit rote. They always ask how you’re doing and what you want to work on, but they rarely take my pulse, ask to see my tongue, or other diagnostic procedures I’ve experienced regularly with other acupuncturists. They also don’t do a lot of proactive work with diet and lifestyle. They’re happy to answer any questions, but I’ve worked with other acupuncturists who are much more proactive about being like: «what are you eating? You should eat this instead. Here’s a recipe» etc.
Overall, Garden Acupuncture is a solid place that treats you right, really seems to care, and goes out of their way to make the experience comfortable and convenient. If you’re in need of some acupuncture, you could certainly do worse.

Being in NYC there are so many amazing options for acupuncture. I have had chronic headaches and migraines for 10 years and have been getting acupuncture at another establishment for a year or so. I decided to find an acupuncturist closer to my work — Garden Acupuncture fit the bill. Unfortunately, I will have to go back to my original acupuncturist in Manhattan. It is the same price, but a much more individualized, healing environment. Garden Acupuncture feels almost like a dentist office and the interaction is the same. Appointments are $ 130 ($ 150 for the 1st visit) and last 30 minutes. I have seen other healers who give you an hour or more for this price and really seem to care about your well being. When I asked for a treatment I am used to getting I was told that he had other patients to see and I would have to come back (and pay again). The acupuncturist is condescending when you tell him about your experience with acupuncture. To sum up — don’t settle when you live in a city with so many wonderful, caring choices for acupuncture. Garden Acupuncture is a very westernized, in-​and-​out type of experience.

I made an appointment online 1.5 week ago as a new patient. Filled all paper work on line, got responses (phone call, text and email) to confirm my appointment. I was impressed and glad this place actually cared about their patients and was efficient.
Unfortunately on the same day, I got a phone call that tried to postpone my appointment (7:00 to 7:30) The girl explained and apologized to me the online booking will book two ppl the same time; I happened to be the later one who made the same appointment so I needed to reschedule. Nothing is available for another week, so I decided to comprise for the 30 min delay and changed my dinner plan, because I have been waiting the session for almost 2 weeks. But Guess what?! After all this talk, they couldn’t even give me that time slot at 7:30 which was what they originally called me for?!!
I did a lot of research and hoped to find a place that I can visit regularly. Perhaps the acupuncturists are great here as reviewed. But this is too sad and unprofessional the way they handle the appointment in my case. I’m not sure if I have confidence to try another appointment. I will try to find another place first.

I work hard. Real hard. Too hard. Body is falling apart. Every stretch sounds like a stepped on bag of potato chips. Sick of popping pills. This last visit to the ER for a pulled back muscle was the straw that broke this camel’s back. Felt it was time for a change. Unilocaled «acupuncture.» Garden Acupuncture popped up immediately, with rave reviews and for good reason. Garden Acupuncture is a very clean and pretty place. I felt better as soon as I walked in the door. Located at ground level, the entire facility is very soothing. The color scheme, oriental rugs, beautiful statues and space crystals made me feel like kicking off my work boots and prancing around in my bare feet. My 1st timer fears were alleviated immediately. I thought I’d be placed face down in a room with needles jutting out of my back. I was totally off the mark. Juliette was so cool and easy going and so full of knowledge. She made me feel relaxed and at peace. I’ve scheduled a second visit and I’m confident in the expected results. If you live in BK and you’re feeling beat up and broken, make an appointment at Garden Acupuncture. Meera, the office manager is kind and beautiful and she greets you with a sincere smile.

The only thing that I did differently while trying to get pregnant, at 42, was get acupuncture at Garden Acupuncture and it worked. Two failed IVF cycles and multiple fertility treatments did nothing for me but the acupuncture helped to conceive naturally and without any drug or fertility treatments. Dr. Alex prepared me for pregnancy, assisted me in keeping the pregnancy and helped to maintain a healthy hormonal level. I delivered a healthy baby boy after believing that I was done. I wasn’t. And I have Garden Acupuncture to thank for that. I cannot recommend them more highly.

I could not be happier with my experience at Garden Acupuncture. I had never tried acupuncture before, but had received strong recommendations from friends and decided to give it a try (fear of needles, be damned) after a persistent bike injury. After two treatments my symptoms were eliminated, which amazed me after spending a month without feeling in my toes. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and have been eager to explain their treatment process.
I am continuing to work with Chris on some other prolonged injuries and always look forward to speaking with Meera when I arrive. Appointments have always been on time, which I really appreciate. I can easily make other plans around my appointments without having to budget office waiting time.
All around a great experience.

For years I have been suffering from insomnia, lower back pain from a slipped disc, endometriosis, panic attacks, and an overall high level of stress. I first turned to acupuncture after an unpleasant experience with a doctor in Upstate NY, which is where I was living at the time. Being fed up with taking prescription and sleeping pills without any signs of improvement were also motives in trying something new rather than continuously going to different specialists and feeling helpless.
After moving to Manhattan a few months ago, a friend from Upstate recommended that I try Garden Acupuncture. Reluctant to take the trip to Brooklyn and possibly have another bad experience, I gave it a shot. Words cannot help me describe how happy I am with the clinic and the progress I’ve made within a few treatments. The balance of professionalism and genuine care of Alex and his staff always exceeds my expectations. I look forward to my weekly scheduled appointments rather than fear wasting money on something that will not help me. Garden Acupuncture has created a cozy environment where I always feel welcome, comfortable, and know I will not be waiting for my scheduled consultation so that it seamlessly becomes a part of my routine.
I have been off all medication for over a month now and take the herbs Alex suggested for me daily. Not only do I fall asleep quickly, but I stay asleep all through the night. I have never felt more rested in the morning despite living in Manhattan and working in a high-​stress environment. I no longer notice my back experiencing as much pain as I used to even while walking or sitting. I noticed my stress levels decreased. I went to Garden Acupuncture for a rotator cuff injury. I came to them in pain with nearly no mobility and walked out of my very first session feeling amazing. Within 2 sessions, it felt like I had a brand new shoulder. I was shocked! I can’t express the amount of gratitude I have for them and what they do. I’m a dancer and personal trainer and will continue to go to them for any injuries that arise. Their professionalism is beyond measure and they are true experts in their field.

I began seeing Lisa and Alex in July 2013, after struggling with insomnia for months. Exhausting other resources, like medications (prescribed and OTC) and even hypnotherapy, I gave acupuncture a shot and found almost instant relief. They spent time going over my symptoms, assessing my condition, educating me on the process, and providing me with recommendations for treatment in addition to the in-​office sessions.
Alex, Lisa and staff are warm, knowledgeable, and provide a comfortable and inviting space. They genuiniely care about their patients. And, you can tell that they love what they do.

After two weeks of back pain and an upcoming week-​long backpacking trip where I’d be carrying 40 pounds, I needed to get myself sorted out.
I’d never received an acupuncture treatment before but heard great things from friends.
On short notice, Sasha was able to fit me into the schedule for my first treatment.
He succinctly explained how acupuncture works and walked me through the process before beginning the treatment.
Sasha focused on the points that causing my discomfort, telling me what he was doing and the importance of each acupoint.
It was a great experience and I can’t thank Sasha enough for how much better I felt afterwards and especially over the next few days.

I had been experiencing tightness and soreness (stress) in my neck and shoulders, probably as a result of constantly lifting a 14 month old boy! So I went to see Alex and Lisa for an acupuncture treatment. At my first visit, Lisa suggested that I follow the acupuncture with a Gua Sha treatment. I wasn’t familiar with Gua Sha and had only had two prior acupuncture treatments (one to prompt my labor and the other to regulate my contractions). The combination of these treatments left me feeling like an entirely new person! The weight was literally lifted from my shoulders. No amount of stretching had ever achieved what I felt after my treatment. It was remarkable!
Alex and Lisa are exactly the kind of people you want treating you. They are warm, very easy to talk to and are clearly very knowledgeable about all things TCM. Logistically, their office is in a great location on Union Street in Park Slope and setting up my appointments have been seamless.
To anyone looking to use TCM to treat a specific concern or for overall wellbeing and relaxation, I would highly recommend Garden Acupuncture!

If you are looking for an honest, educated, clean and caring acupuncturist in NYC, you have to go to Garden Acupuncture in Park Slope. Alex and Lisa are amazing and and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in acupuncture.
My husband was the first to go, wanting to get some help for weight loss. After a few visits and hearing about how much he enjoyed it (knowing I was thinking about wanting to go for my issues), I went in for a consultation. Alex saw me and sat down with me for 90 minutes! He taught me so much about my body, diet and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) it blew my mind! He asked me to make a few changes in my eating habits, take Chinese herbs and see him twice a week. I have to tell you that in the first week, I started feeling like a completely different person, like the person I am supposed to be! It’s truly amazing! Both my husband and I (even though we are going for different issues) keep saying how GOOD we sleep at night, how much energy we have during the day, and how our overall mood has been elevated. (my issue is an irregular cycle (i’m trying to get pregnant) and so far so good! I have seen a drastic change in my cycle in the first few weeks of treatments and have been feeling wonderful!)
The actual process is painless, simple and relaxing. Alex and Lisa are super friendly and actually take time and talk to you, asking you how you are feeling before and after your treatment. The rooms and beds are clean and comfortable (the beds are heated, so nice!). They’re open late AND on Saturdays too, which makes scheduling easy for any working type.
I would HIGHLY recommend you try Garden Acupuncture and begin your life-​changing healing process. You won’t be disappointed with Alex and Lisa.

A few months ago my fiancée threw her back out while we were staying with friends in Brooklyn. Despite being on a variety of western meds, her pain was intolerable.
We were referred to Alex and Lisa at Garden Acu, and were extremely pleased with them and the whole staff. Their bedside manner put us both immediately at ease, and their holistic approach to my fiancée’s condition was as informative as it was refreshing.

I recommend this place to anyone in need of personal attention and great care that will get you feeling great in no time. The staff here are very knowledgeable, attentive, and do such amazing work!
I’m close to 30 and have been trying to get back into shape after little activity for years. Bad knees/​ankles/​wrist/​hips, and just general soreness from getting back into running and weight lifting. After a few weeks of training I was on the verge of quitting as I was so soar.
TWO visits here and I was feeling great. I go back once every other week or so, but I find I’m more flexible, have less stiffness, and am in such a better mood knowing that Alex and Lisa have my back.. literally!

I highly recommend Garden Acupuncture. I initially went to Garden Acupuncture to work on relaxing — I was previously an anxious and stressed out New Yorker. After a few sessions, I felt much more relaxed and whole again. Then, in October, I got hit by a car while on my bike. I went back to treat my injuries from the car accident (I fractured my hip, tore my knee, and herniated my lower back). In short, they were amazing. Throughout the whole process — every step of the way — both Alex and Lisa were fantastic on both a professional and personal level. Their schedules were always flexible — my main treatment for the accident has been acupuncture and chiropractic sessionss — if it weren’t for Garden Acupuncture, I’m not sure where I’d be.
They not only helped with my pain, stress, and general New York anxiousness, but they also helped me navigate the messy world of insurance — all around — excellent practice with excellent people.
