G.Lee’s Smokin BBQ

I meant to post this and now I. Think they are out of business. Shite,.
Went in to G Lee’s for the «last time». I told the owner, look, we’ve eaten here twice and food was over cooked, etc (see last review). He was very apologetic and spoke to the pit cook I guess.
We still waited 20 min for our food but it was DELICIOUS, MOIST and JA-​MAZING. Ah Ha! That’s what it’s supposed to be like. The ribs… the ribs. I need more right now. The rub they use on the ribs and chicken is out of this world.
The thing to know, which was explained to me, is this is rubbed and smoked so there’s no «sauce» except on the pulled pork I think? They have sauces you can add if you want but if you get the meat cooked right you don’t need it.
So I’m giving this 4 stars. Not 5, and here’s why I deducted the last star.
1) SLOW service. The sh$t is already cooked, yo! What’s taking so long?!
2) TINY sides. For $ 12-​$ 20 bucks, pile that macaroni and greens on. Pu leeze. It doesn’t cost you a thing.
3) OVERPRICED sides. $ 5+ for mac and cheese. They say it’s «special» and it’s pretty good, but we all know how much cheese and mac costs to make, there’s a vat in the back, ½lb for $ 5+ is still wrong. $ 4 maybe. Even that is pricy but you can’t serve it in paper containers if you want to charge so much.
4) Emotionless décor. Silly I know, but a few hats on the wall doesn’t make this homey. I needs to be personalized.
Still, 4 stars, go eat there, ENJOY THE HAPPY HOUR and the good people and the good food.

So this was the second time my bf I tried to come here and have dinner. the first time was memorial day and they were out of much of their food. It was a holiday so we let it slide. (many barbeque restaurants we came across that day had the same issue)
A few weeks ago we decided to give it another shot. It was a Sunday late afternoon. We go in and have a seat order drinks while we take a look at the menu. We decided what we want (the sampler platter) and begin to place our order with the waiter/​bartender. He then makes a sound and says that that’s probably the last thing that the chef will want to make. I’m shocked and confused at the statement. I mean isn’t that what he’s supposed to do, cook what’s on the menu. The waiter goes and checks with the chef and surely enough he says the chef only wants to make chicken and chicken wings. Really a bbq joint! We paid for our drinks and left. Last thing I want is a lazy chef making my food. I won’t be back. Management needs to regain control of this restaurant because that was ridiculous.

Absolutely love this place. First I’m not a big fan of bbq but the St Louis rub has won me over. It is the best bbq I’ve tasted and the cocktails are amazing. My favorite is the jalapeño margarita, I’ve tried it at other places but this place makes it the best. This place is the best.

This restaurant needs a lot of TLC
My wife and I came here on a Saturday night. When we entered, there was a preview for a Tina Turner video that was on an unending loop to the point of madness. Okay… eyes away from all the TV screens that surround this place.
Happy Hour prices on the bill does not reflect happy hour prices advertised. When we sent the bill back, the bartender still got it wrong. We gave up.
FOOD =
Barbecue burnt ends were fantastic. It cannot be denied.
However, the pulled pork sandwich that came out was dry, bland, and very skimpy on the pork. No silverware. We asked for it and waited a while to get it. Then we realized that the sandwich was completely bare… just shredded pork with no flavor. We had to ask the bartender many times for the BBQ sauce… so much so that the sandwich got cold when it arrived. No fries??? The bun looks like it came from the grocery store… and I am not talking the grocer deli but the bagged buns in the grocery aisles.
We did not even want to explore dessert.
TLC is needed in this place.
– Bartender needs to be more alert and able to double-​task (wasn’t that crowded
– Some pride and love needs to go into the sandwich. This one reminded me of a sandwich from public school cafeteria.
– Ambiance needs work. The décor is fine, but playing something on a loop is maddening after 2 hours. Turn the visual off and plug in an ipod if you need to. Or play neither music or TV.
I want this place to be good so I hope that a lot of love and a lot of attention is spent on streamlining the service and the food to a level of high quality. I doubt I will be coming back but there are future customers to be had.

What a joke. 45 minute wait after ordering. The ribs were the driest ribs we’ve ever had– like jerky dry. The chicken was dry, the pulled pork wasn’t. But it was cold. Our 45 minute wait was explained as «all of the food is cooked to order» how is that possible with these dishes? Also, $ 6.50 for ¼ cup of bland collard greens! Give me a break. The complete lack of accuracy about the types of BBQ on the menu should have been a clue. Also $ 10 for a cocktail that is clearly corner store margarita mix is a joke.

The most disgusting BBQ I’ve ever had. Burnt to f*ck –tasteless and completely inedible. Shared a sampler with the BF. An hour later when the waitress came to clear our table and 75% of the food was still there she said nothing and didn’t seem surprised by our dissatisfaction. It’s restaurants like this that make people believe we have no idea how to do BBQ in the northeast.

Sadly we came to town for my wife’s birthday and they were out of everything she wanted. A table that got here before us ordered the rest of the ribs and they were already out of rib tips. The jalapeño margarita was excellent however.
Wish I could have tried the food.

We had recently visited Morgan’s barbecue (for which I’ve written a review) off Fulton and were thoroughly disappointed. The barbecue was so unauthentic that I swore off NYC’s ability to make good barbecue. My wife dragged me here because of a deal from here job. We were pleasantly surprised to put it mildly.
Pulled pork sandwich. Very good. It was appropriately moist and the cole slaw topping perfectly complemented the pork. The meat was nicely seasoned We had no use for his (vinegar based) bbq sauce that sat at the table. No complaints here. ⁸⁄₁₀
Rib tips. Man oh man. I bought them figuring they would be a good deal but expected them to be dry hunks of pork. They ended up being very moist and flavorful with excellent seasoning. Great smoke ring. I can’t imagine how good those full size ribs must taste. I’ll have to return to see. ¹⁰⁄₁₀
Jerk wings. So my wife is a Jamaican food snob. To the point that she takes points off if a place says Jamaican but sells trini food. Needless to say she didn’t want to order the jerk wings but I wanted a different taste for our third dish. The jerk wings ended up being perfect. They had a great smokey flavor, were moist, with an authentic jerk sauce that had been cooked onto the wings. We thoroughly enjoyed the wings. Possibly the best we’ve had. ¹⁰⁄₁₀
Overall this place may be our go-​to bbq spot. Everything was excellent and the prices, while slightly high, weren’t outrageous. We would definitely return. Hopefully it wasn’t just a fluke. ⁵⁄₅

Me and the bestie just left this «establishment». We walked in, nobody assisted us at the door. We seated ourselves and sat down for 20 minutes, nobody came over to take our order. Honestly the only person that looked like they worked there was the bartender. We spoke to nobody the whole time. We got up and left. This review is not based on the food, strictly based on the service which was non existent.

I came here twice over two consecutive days. That’s how much I loved their pulled pork and rib tips. On both occasions I ordered their BBQ platter and a assortment of sides. I also ordered the shrimp and grits and the sides included bacon Brussels sprouts, mac and cheese, and fries. The rib tips were all caramelized, with chunks of fat, and smokey meat. The ribs had this awesome burst of smoke and sweetness. It comes with a vinegar bbq sauce that creates a nice contrast. The pulled pork was definitely the highlight, it was juicy, melt in your mouth moist. The chicken was a little inconsistent, it was a little dry on the first night but better on the second night. The sides were all good, brussels sprouts were a little more fried in the second night vs. the first night. The mac and cheese was good, but it was missing that awesome crusty top I was hoping for. The shrimps and grits was amazing, it was creamy, tasted like bbq drippings, cream and butter. The shrimp was dry crusted with spices and breading and fried well.
This joint was pretty empty on a friday and saturday night, you basically have the place to yourself. Its a very laid back bar with a back dining area. The service was good. The only major complaint I had was the loud music and the project screen of music videos. The second night consisted of hip hop and club like music. I found it to be distracting and took away from the overall experience. Id prefer to have the game up or something, vs pounding music.

The best thing about this place is that it has a really laid-​back vibe and a mom-​and-​pop locally owned business feel to it. The owner (I believe) was around the whole time, constantly surveying the place and making sure everything was running smoothly and that everybody was being tended to. The servers are phenomenal — very welcoming, friendly and helpful in taking care of our large party.
The ribs are the best thing on the menu. They are huge and very moist, tender and flavorful, definitely a must-​try. The pulled pork is also very moist and delicious. Only the chicken was overly dry. The happy (which was still going on on a Saturday) is also great. $ 5 cocktails gives me nothing to complain about!
The place may be easy to miss, there is only a banner outside with the restaurant’s name on it, but it is definitely worth a visit.

I went to G. LEE’S with a friend who highly recommended it and I truly enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu, both the drink and food menu. She gave really good advice. The cocktail drinks were delicious and affordable. I ordered the ribs and seasoned greens. The ribs were amazing and fell right off the bone. The greens was decent, I had better. Our waitress recommended the peach cobbler for dessert and boy was my mouth in for a treat. The peach cobbler was phenomenal with a side of vanilla ice cream. Really made me feel like I was in the South.
Small restaurant. Seating can be limited. I went during the week so there wasn’t much of a crowd. There was a live singer and small band playing while we ate which was a nice change of pace. I would recommend this spot to couples or a small group of friends. Great eating for an affordable price. Cannot beat that.

Came in here Columbus Day weekend because my babe was craving Bbq. So I pulled out my handy dandy Unilocal app and searched for places in near our current location (his barber hehehe). I figured this place would do. 1. its black owned and I love supporting black owned businesses 2. pretty good reviews 3.nearby.
However I was sadly disappointed. I ordered wings and collard greens. He ordered ribs. And we shared the mac n cheese. He lied the ribs, the collard greens were too tough and something else was wrong I couldn’t put my finger on it though, neither of us were a fan of the mac n cheese. My wings weren’t fully cooked. I asked the waitress if she could have the chef cook them a little longer. However when I got the wings back they just had more sauce on them and tasted like it was heated in the microwave instead of cooked. My babe sensed my annoyance and said are you ready to go. Yup, we are done here I would of rathered Wendy’s spicy nuggets and fries. Needless to say I had to cook the wings longer myself the next day before I ate them for lunch.
Will I try it out again. Yea why not. Maybe it was an off day. Plus once the wings were cooked they were actually quite tasty. Also the owner was at the bar the whole time overseeing things I guess. I like to see the owner in their establishment.

Have been here several times before. Service could be better (need more staff) but food is good and has great atmosphere. They have potential to be a great restaurant.

Lured into this place as we were walking down Nostrand Ave on our way to sushi.
We ordered the smothered chicken and St Louis baby back ribs. We were the last clients that night, our food within 30mn. They both came out really good. The chicken was soft with lots of smokey flavor. The ribs had some really nice seasoning but the meat was not as tender that I would have liked. The mac n cheese was good but it got cold pretty quickly. The muffins also cold but not memorable. The BBQ sauce was watery.
Really good deals for happy hour. We had the strawberry moonshine and the rum punch (pretty strong).
Overall, I like the look of the place. Not totally sure where they are going with the cowboy theme with old movies projecting while the songs are mainly pop rock but l like the warm dark colors.

Visited G. Lee’s last weekend and it was well worth it. My girls and I enjoyed all enjoyed a meal and their happy hour drink specials. When we first walked in we weren’t sure if we should stay or leave due to the lack of patrons but after looking over the menu we decided to sit at the bar… good choice because our bartender Evan was cool he chatted with us and gave us a little history on how G. Lee’s came to be. They didn’t have patron which my friend wanted I guess cowboys preferred moonshine and bourbon over tequila.
After being made aware that they were out of pull pork I decided to go with the BBQ chicken sandwich with fries, the sandwich was full of meat… a bit too much for me but flavorful. Our order did take sometime to come out, assuming that G. Lee himself was alone in the kitchen, whom we met during our dining. He is known as the Pit Master and if you know anything about BBQ then I’m pretty sure that’s a big deal lol.
The décor is that of old western, rodeo, and cowboys. It’s not overwhelming tho, a few cowboy hats on the wall and two big cut outs of cowboys on the back wall. It still gives a relax and soft feel, dim lighting but good enough to read the menu. Not too loud as there was no music but the TVs were on very low. It was a bit chilly but the heat was turned on of shortly after Evan heard us say it was cold lol and it warmed up pretty quick.
Overall I would def return to G. Lee’s, the happy hour alone is a good enough reason as it is EVERYDAY 5−8pm! The food is tasty and the staff is nice. Go give it a try your bound to enjoy something.

We really wanted to like G. Lee’s. The bar was happening that night with every chair taken. The drinks were stiff and not the typical girly cocktails. The staff were very attentive and personable.
But, the food was the huge disappointment. The food order took a long time to the point where multiple staffs were checking on our order for us at one point in time. We had ordered the smoked chicken and ribs. When our food came out, we were excited to see the blackened ribs but after a few bites in, we found 80% of our ribs to be dry to the bone. The flavor was there but it was just overcooked. The chicken was similar — flavorful but dry. The sides — mac & cheese and corn were delicious and made us wish even more that we could enjoyed the meats.

I have been waiting for this place to open up since they started construction! And let me tell you, I was not disappointed in any way shape or form.
The atmosphere is very warm and inviting, and they staff is very friendly. Evan, our host/​bartender, was mega on his game making sure we lacked for nothing and he is fine as all hell. Oops, eye candy with your BBQ? Yes puh-​lease.
So food.
Where did I even begin? My friend got the ribs and jalapeño Mac n cheese (which I was worried would be too spicy– was very mild and more about enriching the flavor of the mac n cheese) I got the pulled pork sandwich with fries. Those ribs were so meaty and well seasoned it was no joke. I must say though that pulled pork was on pointe.
This place is definitely going to see a lot more of me, and if your interested in trying it, just do it. I promise you a great meal.
