History

Established in 2000.

Floating Piano Factory’s founder, Eathan Janney, discovered his talent for piano tuning when he was in music school at Rutgers University and befriended the staff piano tuner there. After 10 years of experience in both NJ and Chicago he moved to NY, founding an apprenticeship program that allows promising technicians to rapidly learn the trade while offering exceedingly valuable services to a broad range of customers. You can now catch our newest apprentice, Tom Erickson, while he is learning the ropes and his rates are incredibly affordable. And as always you can trust our experienced and highly regarded apprentices, Daniel DiMaggio and Bimol Karmaker, who are handling most service calls in NY. Presently, Eathan Janney, our lead technician is only performing tunings in Peru, as an ambassador from our organization. Business Owner

Eathan has 15 years of experience as a piano technician. He studied with Dave Miller, the staff piano technician for the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Dave Carpenter, inventor of the Verituner electronic tuning device, provided mentorship for Eathan in Chicago. Eathan also worked with Ken Eschete and Bill Schwarts, the staff piano technicians at Northwestern University in Chicago. As a resident of Brooklyn for the past 6 years, Eathan has developed a strong reputation in the NYC area. He is an active member of and the NYC piano technician’s guild and a registered piano technician.

In addition to piano work, Eathan has a wide variety of interests and pursuits. His collaborative and broadly interdisciplinary life’s mission is to perform a series of bold creative acts that through their implausibility inspire a mass sense of duty to overcome fear and subdue violence.
