Backyard in the summer. Nicely laid out. Very gentle instruction. I had a great experience w/​this studio. I am not a hard core yoga phone-​I practice to relax and have a meditative experience. I liked the vibe and the very unpretentious culture unlike a lot of spots I have been to in the city. Plus it’s sliding scale which is nice if you want to come often and not break your budget. A jewel!

Such an awesome, small quaint spot! I’ve been going to the morning classes, as I need to leave for work at 8am, so the 7−8am class is perfectly timed. When the weather is nice, and the classes aren’t too big, the practice is done outside in the back. The morning classes are a bit of a beginner class — which is why the lack of one star — it’d be nice to have beginner class MWF and perhaps an intermediate class on TR. The teacher I had spent a lot of time on the lower body and quads… I would’ve liked some arm and stomach workout as well. I also love that they have yoga mats at the studio for free and the sliding scale ($ 7 – 15) is much appreciated. I typically add a few dollars if I’m using one of their yoga mats.

Go! Haven’t been to a bad class here yet – the evening classes tend to get kind of full, so I prefer afternoon. Incredibly reasonable prices ($ 7 – 15 for a 90 minute class!), a beautiful space, and great teachers. I semi-​regularly go to Monica’s classes and would highly recommend her, especially. She does lots of helpful adjustments and teaches a class that scales well – doable by beginners but if you are at an intermediate level of practice you will still find it challenging.

Love these guys and gals. Lots of great reviews here talking about the pros and cons of this place, the only real con being the tiny size of the studio, and only one bathroom, so changing into your outfit isn’t necessarily going to happen. Still, the quality of the instructors is fantastic, the price is perfect, and the classes themselves are a wide enough variety of types to give people whatever they’re looking for. I especially love that the instructors are happy, enthusiastic and funny people — I am a super beginner, so I never feel judged, and feel like this is a place I can consider my yoga home to build my practice. Well worth checking out — although I don’t want them to be too popular :)

I went to Natalie’s class on Mondays and she was just so great! She had a very nice flow. it was very relaxed from the beginning and then more intense towards the end. There were usually not so many people in the class since it’s Monday afternoon so she will come and adjust your positions for you which was just so great!!!
I love that she made a theme out of each classes. One time she made the entire class about goddesses and explore a lot of the positions about them. Highly recommended!

This review is for Prenatal Yoga classes at BYC only.
I have been to this business about ten times.
Pros:
— Sliding scale fee, plus free mat rentals that are clean (not stinky!).
— Incredible quality of teaching. Tina and another sub I had once are both incredible knowledgeable and caring, and go out of their way to make sure everybody is comfortable.
— A broad cross-​section of people from the neighborhood were in attendance. No freaky yoga cult vibes here, it’s a very sweet group of women who attend from all stages of pregnancy.
— The atmosphere is calm with light blue walls, natural light and air from the front and back, and wood floors.
— Close to subway
Cons:
— No changing area other than the single restroom so best to come in your gear if you can.

This is my favorite neighborhood yoga place. They offer a variety of classes 7 days a week. I’ve never had a instructor I didn’t like there. The sliding scale payment option is great plus it comes with a mat rental! You really can’t go wrong, especially with their early Saturday/​Sunday morning classes. Great for detoxing from the night before.

I usually come to the early morning classes and it’s never been very crowded, but evening classes can get full so it’s best to get there early. My favorite teachers are Pashupa (great blend of meditative practice and physically challenging sequences, and he walked me step-​by-​step through my first headstand!) and Delaney (more athletic and challenging practice), but all the teachers I’ve had have been great.
Not sure where people are getting the hipster vibe from either, students and teachers alike have been friendly and it’s much more low key than the Lululemon-​power-​yoga-​style vibe that some studios have.
Minus one star because it’s been pretty chilly in the studio lately — they have a thermostat but in these past couple winter months the cold has been a little distracting. Not a problem in the long run if you layer up though. I’m so glad this place is in the neighborhood and I can’t wait to keep coming back.

I went to the Prenatal Yoga class last night for the first time and I really enjoyed it. Was kind of nervous because I’m abysmally out of shape and worried that these would all be power New Yorker mama types next to me. My fears were quickly allayed when I arrived. Tina, the instructor, was so warm and personal – she really sets the tone for a relaxed, supportive class that is all about what you and your baby need. The other ladies – all at varying stages of pregnancy from 11 weeks to 37 weeks – were sweet as could be, offering to help one of the other moms in her search for a midwife, etc. I felt the pacing of the class was really perfect. Just the right balance of physicality and relaxation. I never felt pushed or compared or «out-yoga’d». Just a great experience!

Writing a quick update here now that I have a lot more yoga under my belt and it’s almost exactly two years later!
BYC is still my go-​to studio. It’s definitely different than before– not in a good or bad way, just a different experience. The peak-​time classes are full, for sure, but the people are mellow and the levels are very much mixed.
Many of the first generation of teachers have moved on, and I miss them, especially Deidra and Emily B., but there are some great new teachers as well. I recommend taking a class with Nathan, who has the combination of a exuding a really low-​key/​approachable vibe while teaching a vigorous class, and who I’ve found gives particularly thoughtful adjustments. I also recommend Delaney’s classes for a super-​energizing and active flow. I’ve only been to a few of their classes each, and sporadically, but have also now done a decent amount of practice at other studios and feel confident recommending them.
The only thing i miss on a consistent basis here is a top-​of-​class dharma talk. If you’re like me and really desire the philosophical/​emotional/​spiritual part of practice to be highlighted in a class, you may miss it too. (It’s in Pashupa’s or the other Jivamukti classes that I feel most connected in this way.)
All that said, I think it’s a great place for people of all levels to at least experiment with. Chances are you’ll find that the studio’s diversity in styles can be an Achilles heel, but also its greatest strength.

Love BYC! It’s right off Franklin Ave and I’ve only been 2 times and with different instructors but they each have their own way about yoga and that’s the best part! Oh and who doesn’t love the brilliant, affordable sliding scale that you pay $ 7-​$ 15 each time! Danielle’s class was smooth, refreshing and a good relaxing class. Lisa’s class was a bit more posing and had to concentrate more but a great sense of awakening upon leaving. (I raved the whole day after that side stretch!!) Check this place out!!!

I went to class on a Friday with Martine. She was super receptive and welcoming from the moment I entered the door. Her class was well paced and calm yet allowed plenty of room for variations dependent on each person’s experience levels. Adjustments were enough, gentle, and effective.
I love the sliding scale payment model making yoga what it should be — accessible to all… the studio was clean, open and well-​ventilated. They even offered free yoga mat usage (but I bring my own).
As for other comments here regarding ‘hipsters’ or a yoga scene. I didn’t notice any of that. Prob because I wasn’t looking. Anyway, who cares. I am not about keeping anybody out, even hipsters. That’s why I practice. I was too happy with all that I received.

As a relative newcomer to yoga, I am so so glad I found BYC. It’s clean, filled with beautiful light, provides mats, blankets and blocks, and is decidedly NOT holier-​than-​thou.
I take Emily B’s morning vinyasa class every Thursday and I look forward to it all week long. She really keeps you moving, gives clear, firm instructions, and what I appreciate the most about her is that she takes time every class to talk about meditation and disengaging from the worries and cares of daily life, which I certainly need more practice in.
Love this place!

i’ve enjoyed the few classes i’ve taken here as a supplement to my regular studio in soho.
the classes are challenging and the pay as you go fair.
space is relatively ample, provided you get there early and practice in the front.
i hope this studio stays as it is for awhile! i’ve noticed that the laidback neighborhood studios start off relaxed/​casual/​sliding scale and turn into something else.

I’ve enjoyed every class I’ve had at BYC. The teachers are very friendly and supportive, and I’ve never felt like they were talking down to me or pushing me into poses I couldn’t do (which has happened to me at other yoga studios). My favorite ones so far have been with Emily B. and Deidre. I also appreciate the sliding scale, which is much cheaper than most other yoga places in New York (except for Yoga to the People). It’s definitely cheaper than the other neighborhood option, which is Urban Asanas on Nostrand Ave.
I also disagree with the people who think there’s a «holier than thou» or «hipster» atmosphere here. It’s more low-​key than other yoga studios I’ve been to in the city.

I’ve never had a bad class here. However, the teaching style and experience varies widely and some classes are much better than others. I agree that you do get a bit of the hipster, «I’m so cool and bendy» vibe, but it’s tolerable and worth it in the end.
Anna’s Sunday 5pm classes are, by far, my favorite. She has a relaxing and soothing voice, a no nonsense approach to teaching excellent alignment and she really helps you get deep into a pose. I am thrilled to have this affordable studio around the corner!

What a life saver this place has been for me! As an RYT 200 Vinyasa Instructor making a very challenging comeback from having a baby, I wanted great yoga in a welcoming environment — all this and more can be found at BYC. Emily B. is an INCREDIBLE teacher, and, in addition to her inventive, challenging sequencing, she always has a fantastic playlist of real music (not just spa/​new agey/​yoga tones). The price cannot be beat. The facility is always clean, beautifully lit, and spacious enough for ever-​growing population in Crown Heights. — DO IT!!!

BYC is great. The space is very tranquil; the instructors really know what they’re doing, and I’ve even had some of them stay a bit longer after class to show me additional poses or modifications.
Pay what you will ($ 7-​$ 15) is incredibly fair, especially for NYC. Don’t let the price fool you. They have some specialty classes (young yogis for kids, prenatal yoga, absolute beginner classes) and many other classes in various styles (vinyasa, hatha, iyengar, restorative). I recently had surgery and have been going to several restorative classes to repair until I can go back to full-​blown yoga, and they’ve all been amazing.

Cozy, small space. Very local and neighborhood friendly sort of place. I went to their beginners lass on Sunday and didn’t love it, but they have a rotating instructor so it’d be worth going back and trying someone else. Gets really full, though.

I’m thrilled to have a yoga studio in the neighborhood! Blocks, mats, blankets, and a broad schedule of classes are all pluses.
I will respectfully disagree with claims that its a calming atmosphere, though. It’s always full of über-​hipsters who carry with them an air of being «holier than thou.» I guess that’s kind of par for the course in Brooklyn anymore, but its still kinda crappy to deal with when you’re trying to do the yoga thing and accept yourself just as you are.
