Black & White Project Space

I stopped in this gallery tonight for the Williamsburg after Armory Art crawl. It is a great space, with some cool pieces on display. I especially like the outdoor space in the back that holds a few gems for you to view too. At night with the open sky and full moon above us, and a science fiction geometric space in the back kicking out fog, it gave off and eerie but seductive mood for the evening.
The wine was nice too!

I gave one star because of the interaction I had here. It had NOTHING to do with the work being shown.
The woman who runs this place is EXCEPTIONALLY unprofessional, unpleasant and downright rude. I walked in a few days ago merely to ask if the gallery ever rents their space out between exhibitions:
(Looking around, as if there were no way conversing with me could possibly hold any value to her) she responded with just, «No.»
Me: «No? You never do that?»
Her (as if I’m a waste of her time): «No.»
Not, «I’m sorry, but we don’t do that» or «No, we don’t here, but you may want to try…»
Just a bitchy, «No.»
I’ve worked in customer service in more than one job, and that is NOT how you treat someone who is willing to fork over their hard earned money to you.
Could I have caught her on a bad day? Of course, but anyone who knows ANYTHING about business and working with clients or customers, it’s that you DON’T treat them poorly.
Hopefully, for anyone who chooses to attend, the art compensates for the unprofessionalism exuded by the person running the show.

One of the installations caught my eye as I wandered past. It was a man (nequin) lying on the ground, with his entire upper body and head covered by books. Death by Books. That’s how I want to go. Or at least that’s #2, behind Death by Bacon Cheeseburger, which is where I’m headed at the moment.
The rest of the exhibit consisted of open «books» with humorous advice. Perhaps not the most original material (one of them even had a picture of Borat), but I enjoyed it.
I also appreciated the mural on the back wall of the outdoor area, with the woman holding up a talk bubble that says «Be Happy.» I don’t like being ordered around though.
Perhaps talk bubbles are an ongoing theme of the space: they have free postcards (a lovely touch), most of which portraying people holding talk bubbles up above their head. I thought it in poor taste to take all of them, so I selected one that depicted an older gentleman who was ‘saying’ «My dream was to STAY DRUNK!!!»
An admirable goal, sir.

Located almost next door to Jack the Pelican, this is a great followup gallery — you can visit several in a row relatively easily just within a few blocks. There’s an indoor space as well as an outdoor space, and I envy whomever lives upstairs from the gallery (if anyone) because they have a deck view of the courtyard space.
Right now, there are two site-​specific installations at the gallery. Inside, you have Adam Weekley’s «Heating up to Dream,» which features an isolation tank reminiscent of a womb. And outside, Michael Dominick’s «Memory Fountain» offers an interesting commentary on the passing of time and memory.
Oddly, Black & White’s exhibits run somewhat long. Both of these have been active since mid-​December — and Dominick’s will run into March. Still, the front room changes monthly or so, so it’s still worth checking out regularly. I know I’ll be back.
