First time I ate Berts was at a catered event and from that point I was hooked. the food is delicious and they deliver. Its nice to have a place for good home cooked food when you don’t feel like cooking

Four stars because nobody’s perfect! Had the Fish and Grits today, the fish was fried just right and the grits were smooth! My friend has the beef sausage also with grits and eggs which she devoured(she seldom cleans her plate). Beautiful place and spotlessly clean. Get here! Formerly open for lunch and dinner but now open for a great breakfast experience!

They have a $ 5 lunch special Wed-Fri. The food here is pretty good. I’ve had the smothered turkey wings with collard greens and mac and cheese. I’ve also had the smothered pork chops with mashed potatoes and collard greens, the collard greens weren’t as good the second time but still decent. My issue with them began when I attempted to make an order for delivery… So I work literally 10 blocks away from Bert’s. I called to order 2 lunch specials which would have totaled at least $ 10 plus tax. The first thing I did when I called(before even placing my order) was to ask if they would deliver it to me. The person I spoke to acted like I was trying to have the food delivered to the LES. Then when he «got an idea» of where I was located refused to deliver to me because my order was not expensive enough stating«that’s a long way to go for just two lunch specials». So basically they wanted me to make two dinner orders which would have been at least $ 20 before tax in order for my delivery to be worth it. I was pissed. If you want to have a delivery minimum of $ 20 state so beforehand. I ended up not ordering anything from them that day and ordered from somewhere else where they were happy to have my business. This completely turned me off of Bert’s. I believe in supporting neighborhood businesses but when you have an experience like this it really makes you wonder. If it were for the food alone I would have given them four stars but the customer service as far as this experience goes I give them two stars, three stars is the compromise.

Loved it! I’ll update to 5 stars if deserved after I try more options from here. Namely the meatloaf which a lot of places over salt. Anyways…The service here is very friendly and the interior is simple but nice. You can walk in to order in the front area or sit and eat past the doorway in the restaurant section. I can imagine the separation being nice for if you do decide to sit and eat in peace. I ordered potato salad and sweet potato pie because I already had other food at home to go with it. My friend ordered crab cake dinner with yams and mac n cheese. The mac is really good. Not greasy, nicely flavored and a bit of crust for texture. My potato salad was pretty good. I like a bit more cayenne pepper but I guess that’s nice for you to customize to your own palate. The pie was awesome. I don’t know if they sell whole pies but I would buy it often if so. My friends crab cakes were really good too. They were well cooked and didn’t have too much non crab filling. A nice portion that’ll leave you full without being stuffed. If they made their own tartar sauce it would have been perfect.

Walking into this cozy and elegant Bed-Stuy southern gem immediately brought back memories of dining in New Orleans on one Thanksgiving night. The restaurants they have in the French Quarter are very much like this: big, elegant, classic, and with sweet southern charm. My friend and I have lived in the neighborhood for almost a year and just discovered this gem a couple of weeks ago. I used to go to Blue Ice Fish and Chips across the street, but their mysterious and sudden closure prompted me to check out the restaurant with the red awning across the street. They have a little kitchen/checkout area with baked goods for to-go orders, but we dined in despite the fact the restaurant was completely empty. Two of us were eating at a big table designed for a family alone in a large and elegant dining hall. The red plates already set on the table are just for show as they are as old as they are dirty. But you won’t be eating on these. The menu is very straightforward and simple. The menu didn’t remind me too much of the elegant Cajun, Creole, French, and Southern menus you’d get in this type of restaurant in New Orleans but more accurately reminded me of any typical, yet somewhat classy and elegant southern dive you’d find venturing into any Southern town. Cheap prices, straight forward menu items, and honest to God delicious down home Southern cooking. They’re very hospitable and will offer you coffee or beverages while you’re waiting for your food if you take it to go. The fried chicken and mac n cheese were incredible as were the greens and corn. The corn comes generously soaked in butter which is a little guilty pleasure of mine. Whether you live in Bed-Stuy or are just visiting, Bert’s is a great and reliable option to get Southern food in the area with delicious desserts, a calm and relaxing environment, and very sweet and helpful service.

So, I’m really confused about the ratings on this place. We got excited to see this place was only 2 blocks from our new place and the reviews were so good. Sadly we should have got the hint when on a Saturday evening at 6pm the place was totally empty. This is such a weird and outdated place inside. I do not understand the décor and we stood inside for a few minutes before anyone saw we were there. There is a crack head looking woman standing at the door with her 2 year old son who keeps screaming«mama, mama, mama» and this went on almost our entire meal. Pretty sure she was related to the people working in the kitchen. On the positive side the meals were cheap, $ 9 for 3 corn on the cobs, 2 pieces of chicken and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately for us the meal didn’t live up to it’s stars. The corn and green beans were bland. The mashed potatoes were from a box of flakes(VERYDISAPPOINTING), but the chicken was good. I won’t ever come back here, but someone should have an accurate rating to read at least.

Went here during lunch-time. They had a $ 5 special with two sides. I had the BBQ chicken. The chicken was tasty but the mac and cheese and string beans were dry. They said they were out of many sides. It took over 30 minutes for our food to come. For the price it was worth it but the service and food needs improvement. If I do order again, it will be to-go only.

Bert’s Catering is the absolute best! The food is delicious, delivery is quick, and most importantly, the price is right! If you are having any kind of event, call Bert’s! You won’t regret it. The restaurant is nice as well. Wonderful to have a soul food restaurant in Bed Stuy!

I tasted the food for the first time when Bert’s was used to cater a dinner Party. The food was delivered quickly and the nice delivery man helped us get it onto the table. The menu was fried chicken wings, green string beans, Mac & cheese and sweet potatoes. Normally I’m not fond of Mac & cheese and will take a little to taste… wow this was creamy, cheesy and the best I’ve ever tasted, I can’t believe I went back for seconds. I also took some to work and allowed a co– worker to taste it(she is a hell of a cook herself) and she loved the Mac & cheese also. The other food was good also but the mac was the talk of the crowd. Would definitely stop by and try other items.

Was looking for some soul food… my wife works in the area and mentioned this place… Boy was it a great idea to stop in! The lady at the counter was very nice and informative about their specials(Wednesday – Friday.12 – 4 $ 5 lunch specials). The fish and chicken was fried to perfection! well seasoned and finger licking good. The greens were a bit sweet, but was still very good. My favorite thing in a soul food restaurant… the black-eyed peas. I could’ve eaten that alone! It’s a possibility that I might try everything on the menu! Only bad about this place is that it’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays… but opens back just when the $ 5 specials start(LOL).

Me and my Grandmother came here after church about two weeks ago. My Grandmother wanted a fish dinner and insisted she had to get it from here. So I said to myself, Self if it’s good enough for her it’s good enough for me. I ordered a fish sandwich. They mustve used the last of the fish for my Grandmothers’ dinner cause I had to wait about 30min. for my sandwich. I asked for whole wheat bread and had to wait for the Woman who was working the register to go to store to get some bread. Just as I was about to say something my Grandmother gave me that” look” so I had to bite my tongue. Once the Woman came back from the store with the bread she made my sandwich, I asked for tarter sauce and hot sauce on the side. She then informed me that there was no more hot sauce. I was biting my tongue so hard at this point I almost bit it off. With as much patience as I could muster, I asked how much, as I proceeded to hand the Woman the money she told me she had to run across the street to get some change. I gave her one of those” you have got to be f&$cking kidding me looks. As I stood there huffing and puffing I had to remember that I had just came out of church and God would not want me to act that way. The Women came back with my change and maybe sensing my mood, smiled weakly and apologized. I smiled by biggest smile and replied no problem and thanked her. My Grandmother patted my hand and smiled in that way that only Grandmothers’ can. I drove my Grandma home and we went upstairs and proceeded to eat our food. I see why my Grandma insisted on getting her fish dinner here. The sandwich was delicious. There was enough fish in that sandwich for two sandwiches. I said Grandma this sandwich is really good. She replied«see baby I told you so».

i’ve only had Bert’s catering at an event in the city. and the food had been out for about 30 minutes. and if Bert’s tasted that good lukewarm i can only imagine how good it would be hot and fresh. pros: –the potato salad is perfection. effing perfect. –the fried whiting, although not warm at all, was nice and crunchy and delish –the fried chicken. it may not be the best around. but was perfectly coated and fried. and it reminded me of home… and that’s exactly what fried chicken should do. cons: –sweet cornbread. sorry but i like it savory. –the collard greens weren’t my fave. too sweet. but that’s their recipe and you gotta respect the recipe.
