Animal Fare

This store is everything I love about a local neighborhood shop. Great prices, personalized attention, and a great variety of products. Most importantly, Barbara — the woman who owns the store– makes it her business to get to know you and your pets. You can tell she is genuinely an animal lover and she is full of helpful tips and information that you would never get shopping at a large chain pet store. My dog LOVES coming here because she knows a visit to Animal Fare= lots of free treats. Love this place!

In my opinion, this is the best pet supply store in Brooklyn. I went their with the intention of just buying a training collar for my dog and ended up spending 100+ dollars. Barbara (the store owner) is amazing, super friendly, extremely helpful and knowledgeable .
Most places try to push things on you in order to the sale bigger. Not her, after being in the store for 5 min I had felt like I had been shopping their for years. So much so that I had to call her to thank her again for being such a great help and really making my first time shopping their a pleasure.
The prices are very reasonable and quality of her products are top notch. The service alone is a good enough reason To go their.

The woman who runs this place knows her stuff. She gives you honest advice and won’t try to sell you stuff you don’t need.
The prices here can’t be beat by other pet stores in the area.

this place is the best pet store in all of nyc. i swear. great prices. great service. and the staff-​barbara and helen-​are knowledgeable of the products they sell and the animals they serve. I LOVE ANIMAL FARE.

While there are some minor problems with the place (random closings midweek, occasional hiccups on the phone w/​customers when they’re trying to fix an order issue), no one beats Barbara and Helen for knowledge and pet support. When you first go in there it’s sensory overload, with piles of items all over the place. But if you ask them for something they’ll search for it, and once you go in there a few times you generally know where they’ll squirrel something away.
Then, once they get to know you and what you like? They’ll start *saving* stuff for you. More than once I’ve walked in and Barbara has said «Oh! I saved a flat of Amelia’s favorite food! Just wait!»
In reference to another poster further down? Actually, yes, it would break them to deliver. They can’t afford to not have people in the store, and it’s only 4 people running a 12-​hr a day, 7 day a week business. Given their lack of resources they do a extraordinary, fantastic job.

They should deliver. Customer service is not their priority. I have enjoyed conversations with them, but would it break them to have limited delivery hours once or twice a week? One supports a neighborhood business because one expects better, more personal service. Whatever. I order from
now.

Barbara and Helen are great! They make the most out of their space, and carry quality products. They are very helpful, and if they do not have a product in stock (or the right product for your needs), they will order it for you. They are true animal lovers, and enjoy seeing their customers’ pets. It is very difficult to walk by Animal Fare without my dogs pulling to their door. :)

This is the epitome of a great local store that’s a pleasure to support. The two ladies who run it are wonderful, and their stock is an unbelievable selection, although I can only speak for their dog supplies as a dog owner. The food I buy from them is of high quality, hard to find at many other places (and much better than a corporate chain store) and reasonably priced considering it doesn’t cost less than ordering it online. Sometimes the shopkeepers get chatty, so not always ideal to pop in if you’re in a hurry, but that’s also the beauty of a local neighborhood shop.

The lady who owns this store is awesome and totally wants to help you out. As a clear animal lover she also is a gem in customer service. This kind of store is what gives mom and pop ventures their gold star status for adding a great service to their community!

This little neighborhood pet shop is bursting at its seams, with healthy pet food, treats, a variety of adorable toys, and pet health products stacked from floor to ceiling and filling every nook and cranny. The owners are also very friendly and conversant.

The women who run this store are extremely helpful and have always been more than happy to order anything I need. Like several other reviewers, they have given me many free samples, which I pass on to other cat owners if they’re things my cat doesn’t like. I enjoy doing business with Animal Fare!

When I first visited Animal Fare I didn’t buy anything, I understand that space gets away from you after years in the pet business but this place is packed to the gills and not really organized in any fashion I’ve noticed. Also they only carry the 30 lb size of Wellness, the food my big pup needs and carrying that plus 12 cans of wet food for my geriatric chihuahua can be… well…impossible.
I have determined it is worth two trips to buy my pet wares here however. The owners are fantastic. Never once have they not showered my dogs in treats and if they aren’t with me they give me goodies to take home! They are extremely personable and helpful and provide honest feedback on what they have found to be best for the dog (as opposed to what is most expensive/​trendy). Also in terms of value they trump all other local options.

So I found a pet store than wins best-​in-​show! The clincher was that the owner, when asked whether she thought a product I was considering was actually worth buying, dissuaded me from making the purchase! She stocked the product because many owners asked for it but wasn’t sold on its merits for my needs. She also gave me two options when I asked for a recommendation for new litter, one of which was inconceivably inexpensive. Her prices on the food I buy (Innova and Evo) were cheaper than anywhere in Park Slope or Windsor Terrace and comparable with my other favorite pet shop, Hamilton Dog House. She had many more cat toys than any other pet store in the vicinity (and of course plenty of dog accoutrements). Mainly, I appreciated the complete lack of desperation betrayed by the owner. She was knowledgeable and friendly and honest, but I didn’t feel like she would break into sobs if I didn’t buy anything.

The owner, who is a doll, will get me Wysong Au Jus with a week’s notice. Now, there are other stores who carry this as a staple but they’re in Manhattan and since I buy cases and use my car, parking is not an option like it is with Animal Fare. In fact Animal fare is the only pet food store I have found in Brooklyn that will get you Wysong Au Jus. I also like the fact they’re right next door to a decently stocked bodega & pizzeria.

I have perused a great many pet food shops in the Park Slope and Prospect Heights areas, and I have to say there has never been a more visceral experience than to enter the doors of 153 Prospect Park Southwest. This shangri-​la is Animal Fare — where there is never any dissapointments or empty shelves. They have top drawer brand food and are Brooklyn prices for a Brooklyn store, not the Manhattan prices, some Brooklyn stores like to charge. I have to say my experience with Animal Fare was so good it was zenful — I would give more than 5 stars, if only I could… so. are you going to Animal Fare, its on the way to Scarborough Fair and if you ask me Iams, Iams.

I just posted the following review under «ACME PET FOOD» in Brooklyn:
«I know, i know… everyone’s a critic. But I really am upset at what just happened tonight. I have been an ACME Pet Food customer for about a year — until just about a half hour ago. This was when I went in to purchase a bag of cat food. This cat food is normally around $ 38 When the guy (I believe he is the owner) said $ 52… I almost lost it! He said the supplier just raised the price. By $ 12 dollars??? I’m sorry, but that is ridiculous. It’s a shame too because I really like the store, yes there is a cool, sweet cat who lives there (Knuckles) and I think she might have had babies because I saw a kitten that was orange and striped like her hanging around, too. I love to support „mom and pop“ stores, but not when they are obviously price-​gouging. That’s okay because I went back to my original store, another mom and pop called Animal Fare — their price for the same exact 20 pounder is a much more reasonable (and not price-​gouging!) $ 38 — a whole 14 dollars cheaper than ACME!!! Sorry ACME, but you just lost a customer due to your greediness.»

Went here for the first time today to pick up some basics I was missing for the dog I adopted just last night– Barbara behind the counter was just so friendly and knowledgeable, I stayed and chatted with her for a while. Not sure how extensive the stock is, but it looks just absolutely packed with all kinds of stuff. I’ll be back often!

Marvelous Milo was just tugging away at his leash and acting like he didn’t know how to walk on one. At first I thought he was just super anxious, but there was no way it was that since 1) he knows Prospect Park and 2) he gets walked 2 – 3 times a day. At the dog beach I began seeing other dogs with longer leashes and it dawned on me that I was making my poor dog walk on a short leash. ;(So on our way home we made a quick stop at Animal Fare and one of the nice owners helped us select a leash that made Milo want to walk proudly (and freely).
They are always helpful at this store and have stock high quality food like Natural Balance, Science Diet, etc. AND unlike other pet stores who favor dogs, they stock great stuff for our favorite felines Frisky and Giorgio as well. Milo loves the place because the owners always give him treats. So if you don’t take my word for it — just ask the doggies.
