7th Avenue Pet Food

This pet food store is near our new apartment. The owner, Shai, seemed like a nice guy. And they stock Acana, the brand our dog eats. All good. So Ed, my husband, walks over one day to buy the large bag of Acana Grasslands formula dog food. 15 pounds of food, a fifty dollar purchase. Shai climbs up to a high shelf and gets the bag of food down for Ed. They chat for a bit about their respective dogs. Ed brings the bag home.
If you buy Acana, you know that the packaging for the dog food and the cat food is very similar. Some stores mix them up on the shelf. The type on the bag that says either dog food or cat food is pretty small. You need to check.
But Ed assumed that because he had asked for dog food, because the owner had physically taken the bag down off the shelf for him, and because they’d been talking dogs, it must be dog food.
The next day, I opened the new bag of food and it looked odd. The pellets were too small. The color was too light. I checked the bag and it was, as I feared, cat food. I walked over Seventh Ave. to have a chat with Shai about what had happened. But, according to a handwritten sign, the store was closed for a few days. So Ed left a couple of phone messages for Shai, but never heard back.
The next time the store was open, we stopped in to discuss the problem. Shai claimed he hadn’t gotten our messages (even though the number we called was the one on his card) and that he didn’t know if he could exchange a bag that had been opened. He had to check with his distributor. He’d get back to us.
Which, of course, he didn’t.
When Ed finally reached him, Shai said he couldn’t take the food back because the bag had been opened. He then began weaseling out of responsibility for selling us the wrong food. He went so far as to tell my husband that he hadn’t actually asked for dog food.
Now, we understand that $ 50 might be a big hit for a small business, but we were certainly open to working something out. It’s the weasel part, the failure to take responsibility, and the dishonesty, that makes us angry.
We were prepared to be very good customers of this pet food store. But now we will never set foot in the place again.

Been in here several times but this time i had to give both a review and a warning. This place has a dingy, depressing interior, and way overpriced compared to larger pet outlets– but I go here on my shopping days along 7^th ave because I prefer to support local businesses. I Went in with intention of trying a new kind of dry food for my cat and had lots of questions. The salesperson introduced me to the Abadi brand. She was very sweet and pleasant, saying she fed it to her own cat, and demonstrated how to measure the ration, what it looked like etc. This kind of cat food is basically a dry powder– it has the ingredients of a traditional kibble but without the added glue that holds it together. I measured a few spoonfuls and gave it to my cat. It seemed weird giving her dry powder but, this was how i was instructed. We had spoken about it at length, that she also gives it to her dog and it makes him drink a lot of water, which is good for him, etc.
well, Cat tried a couple of bites and looked up at me. I checked the instructions on the box to make sure I wasn’t getting it wrong, and it turns out you’re supposed to mix it with warm water for a «sloppy gruel» and this is actually an important part of the preparation!
So this woman either lied to me when she said she fed it to her cat, or she’s a complete idiot. I’m furious, I wasted my money (if I wanted sloppy wet food for the cat I’d just buy proper wet food– cat prefers dry food in addition to wet) and now Im super worried that my cats stomach will be upset, because she just ate a dry powder not intended to be eaten without water.
Additionally, in June of 2013 Abadi had a recall on some of their products which I discovered online frantically looking for information, which makes me even more suspicious of this whole transaction… were they just trying to unload stock?!!
Never coming here again.

Ugh, bought a braided bully stick from here a few days ago — just now gave it to my dog and realized that meal worms were alive in it! A few had crawled out and I was like where the heck are these coming from… SO GROSS! I immediately threw it away.
Pretty sick that meal worms are growing in their food source. Now, I’m just super annoyed because this sat on a shelf in the bottom of the pantry for a few days — who knows how many crawled out in that time period.
I’ve been getting my dog toys /​food from here the last 2 ½ years — no more — sick, sick, sick.

New owner took it over recently. He’s a really nice guy with an adorable bull dog puppy. He has a great holistic selection (and his dog is learning to skateboard!) Also I compared prices to online and they were exactly the same. I really appreciate not being swindled.

This place is right around the corner from my apartment, so I often go here to pick up food for my pup. They guys who work here are very helpful and friendly to me and my dog. They’re a small store, but they’ll offer to order what you need if they don’t have it. I do wish they had a little more chew toy selection, but their primary product is pet food, so they have what they can fit.

Excellent service! They are a true neighborhood business. They treat you and your pets like neighbors and friends. I love this store and am completely loyal to them.
They carry specialty foods and were able to provide hard to find food that I needed when my dog had cancer.
I have had excellent delivery, but they are a small business, so sometimes you may have to wait a bit. My suggestion is to plan for that time.

I love this store and Sammy, the owner, is great! If he doesn’t have it, he’ll order it. When I shopped last, they had raw frozen foods for pets, which can be healthier for them, if you want to spend a little extra. Highly recommend!

I just moved to the Park Slope area and wanted to find a local place to buy my dog’s food from. The guy that’s there is very friendly and very willing to help you choose a food. They carry Wellness dog food but my dog is a small breed and I’ve been feeding her the Wellness small-​breed formula for a year or so after she developed a food allergy. They don’t usually carry it but he did mention that they’ve been getting a few requests for it. He instead chatted with me for a while and suggested a different dog food for me to try. The latest time I was there I asked him again about the small-​breed formula and he said that if I called on a Tuesday afternoon and ordered a 15lb bag of the food (which I would much prefer anyway to the small bag) he would order it and I could pick it up on Thursday. Sounds good, I think I’ll try that!

Seems okay… except for delivery.
These guys have decent prices and seem nice, plus the selection is good.
But you can’t go around aggressively advertising that you do «free delivery» and then do this:
I called up for a delivery. I live a 3-​minute drive away. I called and asked for delivery. The guy literally laughed at me and said, «Oh, we don’t go THAT far.» Okay, then, you don’t really deliver.
But if you don’t need delivery, they’re fine.

My go to place for dog food.
I used to buy my pet food from
or petsmart, but these guys will deliver a giant bag of dog food to my door for a much better price.
I recently changed brands of dog food, and I can never seem to remember the exact name of it because as soon as I get the dog food, I put it into a giant clear container and throw out the bag. Anyway, these guys always remember the brand. All I have to do is call and say «Can you deliver the biggest bag of that one dog food in the giant green bag that starts with a „P“?» and it’s at my door within the hour.

Very similar selection NYC Pet, friendly staff, they were quick to answer the phone, attentive in store, and carry raw frozen food. They stay open a bit later than Petland on 5^th, but their prices don’t compare. Pricing at 7^th Ave Pet Food is similar to NYC Pet and may even be a tiny bit cheaper.
