The Home Depot

They tell you there are two kinds of Home Depots, but there are actually three kinds.
Regular Home Depot, flagship Home Depot (bigger, more selection), and the third, unofficial kind is the «urban» Home Depot, a Home Depot found in developed, low income areas.
The Gun Hill Road Home Depot is an urban Home Depot. Obvious signs include security checking your purchases and receipts on your way out, day laborers in the parking lot, and finding open boxes of merchandise in the aisles, necessitating checking the contents before you buy.
You also have the occasional guy making eye contact with you saying the mantra «transport?», asking if you want your items delivered. I suspect it’s illegal soliciting.
Guys in the parking lot hang out trying to help you, hoping to get tips. If you’re nice and polite, they’ll try and help you anyway even if you politely decline, so be vigilant.
Actually, I’m at this Home Depot now and there are guys in the parking lot doing amateur auto body work. The parking lot of this Home Depot is a veritable flea market.
Stock here is hit and miss. More often than not, for Tiles and plumbing specialty items and such, I find myself having to go to New Rochelle because this place can be out of stock.
Aisle employees are hit and miss like in most Home Depots, but there are a few great people like Richard at mill work who is very helpful.
Most of the cashiers are nice and friendly.
This pro desk is fairly ace. Nikki is excellent (one of the best I’ve met at Home Depot actually), and Franklin is pretty good too. The latter was one of the very few really helpful people at Jericho Home Depot, so Jericho’s loss is Gun Hill Road’s big score.
This Home Depot is a mixed bag. The atmosphere is heavily «urban», stock is not really reliable, but there are some employees here who make a big difference to making this a good store.

Don’t bother coming to this place they suck gigantic balls big time. Came here to get a battery for my alarm system the guy in electrics sends me over to hardware. Well guess what? No body free king there! Going to new rochelle at least they ask you for help before you put you two feet in the store.

Worst customer service experience of all time. Every time. Just terrible. If you get lucky enough to catch anyone to help you at all, they either don’t know anything or try to sell something that definitely does not fit your needs. Closest location to my house, but never going back for sure.

Customer service sucks! But they have more items in stock at this location than the New Rochelle location. I went here to get a new bbq grill but no one knows who works in the grill department so theirs no one to help me decide which grill is best. So I left.

This place has the worst customer service in the history of customer service. You would think that in a store so freaking gigantic like this one they would have a person assigned to each aisle. NOPE! You literally have to wait like 500 years for someone to come and help you find something or even to ask a damn question. This is the second time I come here and there will not be a third time. They are all clueless. I didn’t see not ONE happy customer. Home Depot, WTF? I expected more from you. Please hire more people, thanks!

this home depot is the same as the other home depots around the five boroughs. same service where you need a staff to help you and there is no one around to help you. you have to do everything yourself. the home depots down south are better. there is always somebody there to help you.

I placed an online order for pick-​up at this location. I received an email within a day that the order was ready for pickup. What do I find after arriving? Part of my order is missing & they can’t find it anywhere. I was given the option of either canceling my order or purchasing a poor substitute product at a meager discount. Normally, I would have just walked away disappointed in another retailer that failed to provide customer service when needed, but I traveled all the way from BROOKLYN to pick this item up because they were one of a few stores that had my item in stock!!! Can you guess if I’m angry Home Depot???

Costumer services SUCKS!!! If I request help, the wait time was about 20 minutes. Then, when I tried to find someone an employee would say «this is not my section». They are not very helpful at all. I had to find things on my own.

I purchased granite counter tops from Home depot. They use subcontractors to install. It took over three months to get them installed. The subcontractor missed the measuring date twice, called twice to find out status and was told tey had not received counter tops and when they did arrive it took attempt tw attempts to install (measurements were wrong). Calling home depot served no purpose. I would complain and was told someone would look into it but never got a call back. I would never use home depot ever again nor would I recommend them to anyone needing contractual services.

I waited in the cold at the Garden Dept. for 30min for help trimming and wrapping my Christmas Tree. Very poor customer service.

RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE IF YOU WANT ANY WORK TO BE DONE. Ridiculous managers, LP MANAGER MARK left me on the phone for 35 minutes and hangs up the phone and goes for a walk. NO WORK DONE. I had to call in headquarters so i can see where my flooring is. I was promised 1 week its been 2 weeks and 2 days. I went in the store because i was lied to by the flooring manager WANDA that my flooring will arrive at 5 i showed up at 730. I go to the servic desk and they say go to flooring and juan will be there to get it. I look for JUAN hes no where there, finally found him and he told us wait ONE MINUTE. I waited FIVE WHERE DID JUAN GO? No one knows. At this point after being on the phone for hours and being lied to i went BALLISTIC, and this young guy goes and looks for my floor and ITS NOT THERE. They made up some stupid lie about how the truck got rerouted. STILL NO FLOOR AND IM PAYING $ 3k rent and no business done. Its sad. SAD SAD SAD.

Not bad, not great.
I needed some paint and paint supplies and the help in the paint section was pretty good. It would’ve been a bit more organized and faster, but they did help and get the job done.
Be prepared to be pestered by the Mexicanos looking for work outside the store. They actually go inside the store and ask you if you need them for that hard, manual labor.

Huge store. Has most items in stock most of the time. Has self check out. Only complaint is most of the help really doesn’t want to be bothered with helping customers and it really shows! Poor custoemr service!

It’s big, it’s warehouse-​y, it opens at 6am most days.
Being presently unemployed, only ever go during business hours, but the lines are short, and more shockingly, the employees are rather polite and helpful. They manage to slot into that magic space between unhelpful and too helpful.
I can’t speak to Peter K’s issues with the contractors, but when it comes to just buying a few miscellaneous bits of hardware and garden stuff, this is consistently the most pleasant-​to-​visit Home Depot i’ve encountered.

For the sex starved individual, there is plenty of hard wood passing through these doors. There are plenty of tools passing through also. Joking aside, I’m not talking about hammers, miter saws, Batarangs and other items in a utility belt, Robin.
I’ve come here for paint supplies, cleaning, lighting and the products are fine. The check out lines are long. One bonus is the hot dog stand in front. Its a good snack spot, since I refuse to step into Chuck E Cheese (crappy food, crappy kids, crappier parents) across the way.
But the real meat of this review reflects on Home Depot’s contractor services.
As a home owner of one of my childhood homes, my parents decided to keep the same kitchens for the last 30 years (or since it was built). This explains why I never had the nicest clothes or cars, but was fortunate to attend private schools my entire academic career. I decided it was time for a fresh look. Because Tim the Toolman Taylor accurately describes my lack of dexterity in home improvement, I decided to consult the experts.
I used the services of Craftmasters-​Home Depot to renovate two kitchens simultaneously; project that spanned 5 months (march — august). I know, crazy. I was without the use of a kitchen for a month (= week of work, waiting time, countertop).
The Good:
+ Design with Jim W was good. He was sensitive to cost and made sure the kitchen designs reflected it.
+ Actual work: demolition, electrical, plumbing, carpentry work occurred on time.
+ The final product was good — kitchen cabinets and counter top look good (comparing before and after).
The Bad:
— Some subcontractors were inconsiderate of other residents (neighbors)… although scheduled for a 9AM start, they may show up at 7AM or 8AM and ring all the doorbells. This is frustrating. In the paperwork, the work is fully documented. So is the contact information.
— Lack of accountability. I had to make calls and follow up with statuses. I couldn’t rely on Home Depot to get back to me with an answer.
— Countertop colors ended up being incorrect. Somewhere in the system «colors» were not updated as we requested.
— «Innovative Stone/​Marble Techniques» delayed the countertop for a few weeks thanks to their mishandling of paper work — overpromising and underdelivering on dates is annoying. The team did their measurements and I had to end up paying more money due to cost overruns.
The Ugly:
– Insincerity of customer service. Ever feel like you are talking to a used car sales man? They tell you what you want to hear, but it’s vapor ware. There is no ounce of genuine conversation, no did I feel confident in them. I would call back and do the follow up.
– Opportunity cost. I could have bought a M3. Or I could have moved into another borough by now. Wonderful.
– I was a victim of proximity. I’m not sure if Lowes would have been better.
The road traveled left much to be desired. I don’t question their work or selection of skilled workers. Unfortunately, the operations management is questionable. Being without a kitchen for more than a month is painful; knowing that minutes, hours, days and weeks could have been shaved off but weren’t is depressing.
I’m not going to do another kitchen renovation project with Craftmasters-​Home Depot again. The headaches I encountered were too much for me to happy about the entire process. If I need something from Home Depot, I will go to the one farther from my house [
