I am so glad I found Jim through the reviews on Unilocal.Jim is a gem! He is one of the best handymen I’ve dealt with. His work is impeccable and flawless. He is honest and the nicest, easiest going guy you’ll ever meet. He will put you at ease immediately. Jim knows his craft and he can repair, build and beautify any part of your home. Jim showed up on time and responded to my email the same day I contacted him. He is super responsible and hard-​working! I highly recommend Jim!

I found out about Jim through Unilocal and felt comfortable hiring him because he had received good ratings overall. But, how wrong was I!
I hired Jim to install an in-​wall air conditioner. He was extremely friendly and helpful at first and because of that I excused some unusual behavior during our first meeting. Upon seeing my air conditioner, he recommended that we try to fix it instead of purchasing a new one. So, adhering to his professional opinion, I drove him to Home Depot and picked up the materials he needed to fix the unit. Three hours later, his recommendation was unsuccessful and yet he still charged me $ 150. That weekend, he e-​mails me some other suggestions which I did appreciate. He apparently found a 6 – 7 year-​old used AC and wanted me to purchase it from his client at a lowered amount. It seemed reasonable and fair enough, though, it was strange how much he wanted me to purchase this AC. Fortunately, I was able to find an AC from my parent’s house and asked him to install this one instead. Two days later, he sends me a very unprofessional and rude e-​mail accusing me of using him. I still do not know how I supposedly took advantage of him if I am the one left having paid $ 150 with no AC installed. This experience has left me frustrated and disappointed.
Jim is unprofessional, unreliable and moderately skilled. Unilocal readers, I suggest you to reconsider before hiring him.

No call, no show… Not only did Jim not call to say he wouldn’t be coming, he also avoided phone calls and emails when attempting to inquire as to his where abouts…

Jim is awesome! I needed someone do to a bunch of random work in my apartment, so of course I turned to Unilocal.Based on the reviews, I went with Jim. He was amazingly talented, professional and reasonable. He regrouted some broken tiles in our shower and hung a few light fixtures. I highly recommend him!

This gentleman came thru in the clutch for me and my family. Fixed a jack problem that I had with a light fixture in my kitchen which also created a problem in the rest of my apartment. I called jim, we spoke 2 hours later he came thru, fixed the problem and didn’t hit us over the head with the pricing.

I’ve never really «hired» a handyman before Jim, but of all of the handymen I’ve ever dealt with – Jim is the most clean cut, extremely professional, reliable, and incredibly genuine. Jim’s hourly rates are reasonable and he does not overcharge, even if he over/​underestimates (especially if a quote is given over the phone without seeing the actual place that needs work done) – his fees are appropriate and completely reasonable.
I’ve just moved into a studio apartment that required a much needed upgrade. I called a bunch of handyman services that I found on Unilocal,and Jim was only 1 of 3 that got back to me on the same day. Since he was so friendly and patient with my request, I immediately scheduled an appointment with him. He confirmed our appointment the evening before, arrived on time, and promptly got to work after greeting me. He painted my kitchen, bathroom, and a wall in the living room… and my apartment now looks amazing! He also installed a new showerhead and changed my toilet seat in literally less than 5 minutes. Throughout the day, he was also very conversational and friendly. More importantly, I felt that I could trust him with my apartment and belongings, as I left for a couple of hours while he was still working.
Hiring Jim was SO worth it (and I paid out of my own pocket since my landlord was not required to make all of the updates that I wanted to make)…I’m loving my apartment!

Highly recommended! Jim did some wall repair and light electrical for me. Then I hired him to do some painting. He’s reliable and reasonably priced. His work was (and clean-​up) was great,

I give this guy two stars because on my particular job, he failed to impress me. I asked him to install a new vanity, which he did, but the job took about 3 extra hours because there was a leak that he could not correct once everything was put together. I believe he did not have too much experience with pluming, but other jobs he did for me that same day, like install window guards, and open up a wall A/​C whole on a wall, were done ok. He was very professional and guaranteed that he would return to re-​do the job, should the leak start again, and he was good on his promise. He maintained a positive and professional attitude. Also, he did not charge me for the extra time it took to fix the leak, nor for having to return. Overall, he seems more experienced with A/​C jobs and nailing in things on the wall, but may not be too experienced with pluming.

Jim Scanlan is incredibly professional, prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable in his field. I hired him to hang some curtains and blinds around my new apartment, and he installed them with no trouble at all! Furthermore, I mentioned that I intend to hang a decorative rug on my wall, and he e-​mailed me a few hours after he finished the job here with a list of different options for hanging it. After that, I would wager a bet that, if you look up the word «thorough» in the dictionary, it’ll have his picture next to it. Highly recommended!

During the first hot week of the (almost) Summer I called Jim to install two wall air conditioners in my apartment. I expected that it would be very hard to schedule a time, but it was all done perfectly less than 24 hours later!
Jim was exactly on time, explained what he was doing, and had the patience of a saint as my two year old asked him «What are you doing?» every 3 minutes. Very nice guy, knows his stuff, highly recomded. Will definately call him in the future for any handyman-​type assistance!

I recently hired Jim to install a closet system that frankly I was too afraid to tackle myself. After one year of living with my clothes in bins, Jim made me and my clothes very happy! Jim was prompt, prepared and professional; listening to my needs and not leaving until the job was done. It is so hard to find a good handyman and I am glad that I found Jim. I am extremely happy with the results and would recommend him for any job!

Jim is in high demand and has a tightly booked schedule, and when he repaired the rotted windowsills in my apartment, I saw why. I was mega-​impressed by how knowledgeable and competent he was. He knows what everything is made of and how everything works; he even knows how to build houses from scratch. He suggested a solution to my windowsill problem that was cheaper than what I thought I needed, and then did a great job of the work. Nice guy too – friendly, patient, genuinely helpful, and clearly loves and takes pride in his work. A real craftsman. Two thumbs up!

Jim did some work for me last week. He arrived right on time, maybe even a few minutes early, I can’t recall. He had an excellent attitude. Whatever I suggested, he did his best to accommodate. He is very easy to talk to. He is extremely knowledgeable and skillful at his craft and showed his familiarity with putting stuff together, building stuff from materials, design, plumbing, and other areas I required his help in.
He is highly professional and polite. A lot of guys in this field are rude and surly– not Jim! I also found him to be honest and trustworthy — I had no worries about leaving him doing some work while I went out to run some errands. He also thoroughly cleaned up the areas he worked in, like from sawdust and stuff.
Overall, he did an outstanding job. I have recommended him to family and friends needing a handyman and would definitely use him again.

Update– called Jim to install a ceiling fan– he arrived 5 Mins EARLY to the appointment, brought his own ladder and tools, and got the job done in about an hour. He’ll be my go to guy for other fixits. Apparently he also does cabinets, molding, etc.

I highly recommend Jim for all your handyman projects. I recently hired Jim to install wood blinds and a lighting fixture in the living area of my apartment. Jim was extremely professional, experienced, knowledgeable, and efficient. Jim was a pleasure to work with and is also very reliable, and emailed me to confirm our appointment. The blinds look great and the ligthing fixture was installed beautifully. My apartment looks great!

Just recently used Jim’s services again and they were so good, I had to re-​rate him. Jim is one of the friendliest, best people to work with. I had him come in to put in my new air conditioner and he got done with it so quick he asked if I had anything else. He looked at those problems, ran out to the hardware store, ran back and fixed them.
Basically, for any plumbing or handy work you need you should absolutely hire JIm. I called him and when I told him I was in the Bronx, he actually came the same day! His prices are great, he doesn’t over charge, and I’m going to say this again, you should hire Jim.

Jim was prompt, friendly, efficient and trustworthy. Reasonable rates and he fixed things that have been driving me mad for months. We had him install a ceiling fan and lighting fixture plus fix a leaking sink and a low water pressure shower. A plumber/​electrician combo in one — great service, highly recommend.

I work for an interior design firm here in New York. In the middle of construction on a local project, I had emergency plumbing issues arise. I Unilocaled «plumber»…yet found Jim The Handyman. «Aha!» I thought, «A Handyman, that is what I need!!».
I called Jim right then and there and set up an appointment for the next day. He showed up to the project on time and in great spirits. He immediately assessed the problem and came up with a cost saving solution.
Jim is a great guy to work with. We look forward to utilizing him on more projects in the future.

After reading Unilocal reviews I decided to contact Jim for a last minute plumbing fix I needed for my toilet. Jim was very nice and professional when we spoke, he showed up on time, did the work quickly, and best of all he did not overcharge at all for anything that he did. He cleaned up all of the work, and was super diligent in everything.
Even though the call was for plumbing work, he even took the time to take a look at my apartment, and listened to some of the concerns I had with the place. He has the knowledge and expertise to identify what was the cause of some of the issues I had, and what he could do to fix them.
I will definitely use Jim for all of the work I need done in the future, and I would highly recommend him for anyone else.

It’s hard to find a good handyman in NY. Luckily, I found one. James Scanlan can do anything from plumbing to fixing those odds and ends around the house. Door isn’t closing right? Need a faucet installed? Call James. He does a great job and is a stand-​up individual. And the best part is, is that he truly enjoys and cares about his work.
He installed a faucet in my boss’ apartment. He was on top of the job and didn’t waste a moment to finish things up. He makes an effort to keep the area he’s working in clean.
My boss was also in need of new shelving. I had already had the brackets, but Jim got the wood, stained it and put them up. They look fantastic.
