Spooners Frozen Yogurt

Good yogurt. Terrible customer service. Was staffed by three college guys. No personality. One guy sat and texted on his phone while customers filled toppings on the other side of him. He never looked up and acknowledged them. Owner take note of the complaints about your staff.

Spooners is really good. They have a bunch of different frozen yogurt choices and toppings as well. They give reward for buying frozen yogurt so sign up! Also environmentally friendly with reusable bowls and recycling :)

This place has really gone downhill as of late. They’ve increased prices, cut staff and toppings, and now require an employee to watch you as you sample flavors. If I’m going to drop $ 10 bucks on yogurt for me and my guy I want to be able to try a couple of flavors first.

Food’s all about experience. The shop is fantastic, the owners take pride in their establishment and products. They race to serve you options which might match your taste, and are extraordinarily polite. I am sure that the terrific taste of the treats of the shop was magnified manyfold, not just because the quality of ingredients is excellent, but because we all felt fantastic and happy in the shop. We will be back for sure!
The reason why we entered the shop was because we skipped dessert at BJ’s Restaurant; they had horrible service and a totally unresponsive management team. What we lost in energy and charm there, we were happy to replenish here.

Lovely locally owned frozen yogurt spot. The use locally sourced milk to make a huge variety of flavors. A kiddo friendly spot, the perfect bribe to get your little ones through some quick errands.

Loved Spooners because they have cheesecake bites. Nuff said.

Their flavors are a bit hit or miss for me, and I don’t like the topping dispensers, but they do have a lot of topping options which is always a plus. Also, they have a nice seating arrangement, very comfortable.

Spponers is my new go to for a sweet treat that I don’t have to feel guilty about! They have a wide variety of flavors but I personally stick to the ones that are dairy free. The Almond Milk froyo mixed with the Mango Sorbet is my favorite. I am also impressed with the wide variety of toppings– it ranges from healthy fruit, nuts, and granola, to chocolate, lots of candy goodies and fudge of course.
I find it to be very reasonably priced and has convenient hours. Easy to stop by after dinner or an evening event. What I really like about this place is along the walls they post information about the food, how it is all natural, and no there are no added sugars or chemicals.
One thing to keep in mind– if you’ve never been there before they ask you if you want to give them your phone number. I thought it was to keep track of my purchases as a rewards system. By the time I got home I had received a text with a coupon. Very cool that I got a coupon and will definitely be going back to redeem it, not cool that I inadvertently gave them permission to text me. Not a big deal but something to keep in mind if you are very strict with receiving unwanted information like I am!

The yogurt is decent and there’s a nice variety of toppings.
However, 2 out of the 3 times I’ve been there, 2 really loud college girls have been behind the counter, yapping — with children present — about their dirty deeds at whatever parties they’ve been hitting up lately. I can’t even tell if they work there. And I’m no prude, but listening to the yogurt people announcing to a room of families and kids their latest «sexploits» is, ummmm, weird.

I visit Spooners after 10pm (when Ripple closes).
It’s a sufficient alternate.
Yogurt is runny, toppings are ok, staff is weak.

2012 Review #320:
The first time I went here, I really enjoyed the flavors, and thought it was probably the best yogurt in Boulder. However, a couple of visits later, and I think the flavors have wilted a little bit.
My most recent visit, I tried arguably my favorite, and least favorite, flavor on the planet which is salted caramel. I am not exaggerating when I say that their version of salted caramel tasted like cherry cough syrup. When I first tasted it, I closed my eyes to make sure that I was really tasting it, and it really tasted like cherry cough syrup. I don’t know how, or why caramel whatever tastes like sour cherries, but it did. Not Pleasant.
I also tried cookies and cream, chai, and pumpkin spice. The cookies and cream was not amazing, the chai was just not creamy enough, and the pumpkin spice was almost too creamy. It almost needed some acid or real yogurt flavor to make it not overwhelming. I ended up getting some Coconut cream pie, which was coconut and vanilla swirled together, as well as some peanut butter, and cookies and cream. The topping selection is pretty good, with vertical dispensers for items like cookies, chocolate chips, etc. They have bins for messier items like Boba, fruit, and things like cheesecake bites.
Prices are a little bit high, at $.45 per ounce. I do really like that there are small cups as an option, because it keeps the portion size under control. However, I found that I got virtually the same amount that I normally do in a big cup, so maybe it doesn’t make a difference after all. When I sat down and had the flavors together, they were okay. Absolutely nothing remarkable though. The cookies and cream had a flavor I would describe as subtle, which is not what I normally want in an Oreo flavor. The coconut cream pie was okay, but again too subtle. The peanut butter was pretty good, but it’s peanut butter, what else is it. going to be?
Since this place is so close Ripple, I might go to Ripple over this place, but honestly they’re pretty much a coin flip in terms of quality, and selection. If you’re in the mall this is probably the best option.

Y’know, I kind’ve like it here. It’s a bit out of the way, on the «back end» of the 29^th street mall, but that means it also has a really incredible view of the FlatIrons. Seriously, one whole star is just for that view.
There’s plenty of inside seating and a fireplace that I’m looking forward to snuggling up to in the winter, plenty of patio seating as well.
And the yogurt? Pretty damn good. Not the best in town, but definitely a solid B/​B+. Toppings are ample without being overwhelming. Pricepoint is average.
Not a huge fan of the décor (the Chiller font seems really out of place for a froyo spot), they don’t seem to recycle (which is weird for Boulder no matter what, even weirder considering that all their serving materials seem to be easily recyclable) and the staff can be inappropriately chatty with each other when there’s no one to help.
I don’t go out of my way to come here, but when I’m down in that part of town, I’ll happily pick Spooners over the others.

As frozen yogurt places are popping up all over the US, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compare them all; generally they are all quite the same. I like Spooners because of the ambiance. Most self-​serve frozen yogurt places are crowded with uncomfortable seating. Spooners is one of the few froyo places with booths, couches, and a cute clean bathroom. The yogurt flavors are somewhat limited, but taste excellent. The perfect balance between sorbet and soft serve ice cream. The toppings are good, more health oriented I would say, less candy options than a place like Ripple would offer, but a higher quality of products. Also, they have popping boba, a great addition to any frozen dessert. This is by far my favorite yogurt place in Boulder, much more enjoyable to visit than the overpacked crazy environment Ripple offers. Come here for a frozen treat enjoyed in a calmer environment.

Though I hadn’t noticed Spooners ever, one of my friends recommended it after a birthday party recently. It was raining a bit, so what a lovely covered porch area to sit outside and enjoy frozen yogurt on a summer evening!
I’m not so much into comparisons as I am into enjoying what’s good about each place, so I will say I enjoyed Spooners just as much as I enjoy Ripple. I can see the differences and similarities.
The chai froyo here is so perfect… I had it mixed with the green tea froyo, topped with almonds and fresh raspberries. A very smooth nice taste mixture. Would definitely do it again and again.
The outdoor tables are worth mentioning again. Comfy and pleasant.
Throughout my reviews I have mentioned more than once how I abhor shopping malls, whether indoors or outdoors. However, despite the fact that Spooners is definitely in a shopping mall, I will return.
And that’s that.

Having been to 3 FroYo spots in the republic of Boulder, I have to say this is my favorite so far. Boulder chill was good and clean, ripple was clean, but filled with Tweens and people who didn’t seem to be eating yogurt. Spooners has a great variety, maybe the flavors change a lot, but it seemed there was a perfect mix of fruity and savory. My personal fav is the mango with toasted coconut and fresh raspberries. The price difference between ripple is pennies an ounce, so that’s not a point for me to contest. I will agree that the spill trays are a little dirty, but (maybe because I’m fat) it doesn’t turn my appetite. I’ve had Spooners twice and ripple a few times, but maybe I need to try ripple more often.
The yogurt at Spooners seemed creamier to me where it seemed gritty at ripple.

Being a self-​professed self-​service frozen yogurt connoisseur, I have to give Spooners a thumbs-​down (this is after 3 visits where the experiences were consistent with each other). Yogurtland (now in Denver) is tops, due to price, flavor variety and overall flow of space. Ripple, to me, is #1 in Boulder. Here’s why Spooners fails for me:
1) It’s dirty — the drip trays under the yogurt spouts are always filled with major piles or drips of old yogurt. It’s disgusting and makes me lose my appetite (meanwhile, Ripple’s employees are always hustling and wiping everything down — I even saw a mini-​vacuum come out at one point to get in between the toppings bins). There were 5 employees behind the counter at one point, just standing around too — it’s not like someone couldn’t have been straightening.
2) The yogurt texture is runny — when you first pull down on the lever, liquid comes out. And the yogurt is already near melting… GROSS.
3) The corridor for the yogurt is super narrow — doesn’t allow people to veer in and out to get the flavor they want very easily.
4) It’s more expensive than Ripple and Yogurtland.
5) The flavor combos are bizarre (the middle spout/​lever). Also, not very many fruit/​tart flavors.
6) Waste management — everything goes in the trash, whereas (I know, I keep mentioning them) Ripple composts.
There you go, a multitude of reasons why Ripple/​Yogurtland is better. If you are a Spooners fan and you haven’t tried Ripple, you gotta check it out.

Pretty good fro-​yo I was not too impressed with the flavors, a little to fruity for me, but they did have hot fudge, so that was nice.

At only .49 cents an ounce it’s easy to cool off cheaply here. There were a few flavors that I didn’t like, but that isn’t saying that they were bad. The chai tastes like chai and is not overly refreshing, but it might be great for someone else. I skipped most of the toppings, but they had at least 30 different dry toppings, 20 wet ones and five or so pump toppings.
I haven’t been to ripple yet, but spooners will definitely be seeing me again!
Hot tip: samples are free as long as you buy something, so don’t feel rushed when making your selection.

This place has lots of frozen yogurt flavor choices which seems to be de rigueur in Boulder these days. But some of the flavors SOUNDED yummy, but after tasting, they turned out to be kind of icky (red velvet cake or watermelon) and some of the combos were strange mixes indeed.
The place was packed when I was there and unlike Ripple, there didn’t seem to be room to move around. I know Spooners is new and the impression I have from the flavor choices and service is that they haven’t gotten it together yet. Back to Ripple, I go!

I think I’ve found my weakness… FroYo. It’s just so damn delicious and I have a really hard time saying no.
Honestly, I was a little disappointed when Spooners finally opened. I was hoping that they’d have more fruity flavors (including the pomegranate/​blueberry one I had tried at the FoCo location), but they do have plenty of other fun ones (I’m looking at you, Marshmallow). Once you finally decide what kind of yogurt you want, there’s more tough decisions ahead in picking your toppings. My favorite is definitely the toasted coconut — blows regular coconut out of the water. I also love the hot fudge which tastes like real fudge (like mom used to make) and not chocolate-​flavored syrup.
Prices are comprable ($ 0.45/oz), so no complaints there. They keep a record of your purchases by phone number (instead of a punch card) which is one less thing you have to keep track of.
Location is awesome! Right next to Mad Greens, on the ‘back’ side of 29^th Street, there’s a bunch of tables on the sidewalk that make for a nice outdoor patio area. Plenty of indoor seating, too!
