Pony Express Moving Services

I had a great experience with them moving from DC to Boston in the summer of 2015. They worked with me to help save money by combining it with another move and the people on both ends of the move were professional and super nice.
I had a bit of a hard time getting a hold of them while setting things up, but I think that’s just because it was a busy time and they’re a small operation — once we confirmed everything they were very responsive. I would strongly recommend Pony Express to anyone planning a long-​distance move.

I have used Pony Express for two moves now — one in-​state and one across-​states. Both moves were great — the guys were all friendly and took pride in their work, they worked quickly and carefully, and they were very professional. Both times, I had a lot of fun on what would otherwise be a very stressful day because the guys were all so pleasant to be around. Prices are totally fair, and they were really flexible to my needs (including adding a second drop-​off point in my across-​state move). They were quick to respond to any slight problem (e.g. next-​day shipping a small vacuum attachment that was left in the truck), very patient with awkward building regulations around moving, and quite crafty with New York City parking.
The booking experience was also exceedingly simple, and the person on the other end of the email was polite, patient, and helpful in providing me quotes, packing tips, and helping me figure out the logistics of the move.
I’ve had my fair share of rough experiences with movers in the past, and now that I’ve found a company that is reliable, accommodating, and pleasant to work with, I really appreciate how much it matters to hire movers you can trust. Although every experience is unique, having two fantastic experiences with four different guys gives me confidence in Pony Express.

Great moving company! From start to finish, the movers were courteous and took great care of all my furniture items and boxes. They treated the fragile boxes with care and not a single thing was damaged in the moving process. Highly recommended if you’re looking for quality moving services.

Wow! I cannot express how awesome this moving company was for me. I recently made a long distance move and they not only accommodated me within a week, they were so affordable!
I also had some requirements about stopping half way to my destination — dropping off some things and picking up some other things. This required a dedicated truck. Because this was just off the highway and not out of the way, they were more then happy to oblige and didn’t even charge extra for it!
Josh was really great to work with. He came to my home and assessed what needed to be moved and gave me a quote the very next day — and despite changing a few minor things, the quote never changed! So I wasn’t surprised by any «extra fees» that some moving companies have been known to do.
The driver, Lou, was absolutely FANTASTIC! He was in constant communication with me throughout the travel days. His crew meticulously wrapped everything — including my flat screen tv.
A few days later, moving into my new place was so easy. Lou was so accommodating and again his crew was gentle in handling my stuff. Nothing broke!
Would highly recommend them to anyone in the Boston area that is looking to move long or short distance. Thanks again!

I asked them a simple favour of moving my stuff from storage unit when I was not in town, and I was not disappointed. They only got paid for 3 hrs even though they spent little over 5 hours in doing this moving job for me, along with closing the account for me with Uhaul. I will highly recommend them for express jobs! They understood my need of getting things done and they delivered!

I don’t know if you can get a cheaper service with a better bunch of people! We moved from a 2^nd floor walk-​up to a 4^th floor walk-​up apartment and these guys rocked! The 3 people that helped us the day of the move, as well as the phone service and email contacts, were all very courteous and prompt. I’d hire them again in a heartbeat!

I’ve used this company 3 times in the last 4 years and every time was fabulous. They arrive on time and they know what they’re doing so moves often take precisely or slightly less time than they quote. I’ve never had anything break in their care and the dudes that work for this company are always very nice and accommodating when need be. I probably will never use another moving company for local moves as long as pony express is around.

Moving from an exurban Mass house I’d been in for thirty years, to a rural Maine location, was a daunting experience.
Pony Express performed exceedingly well. The slogan «Professional and Friendly» seemed very appropriate; it was what I needed.

Poor packaging of our stuff. A lot damaged and never paid compensation. The owner actually called to ask us to up their rating and when we said they needed to pay the compensation before we would think about is … nothing heard again. Not a good experience.

Moving is always very stressful. I was thankful to have shopped around a bit for prices and Pony Movers were definitely the best deal. I have had various movers through the last few years because of how much stuff I have. They were very professional and were able to coordinate my move perfectly. I was moving out of the state and they were able to actually pack my stuff with someone else so that I could get a cheaper price. I was unable to be there for either the packing up or drop off due to work and trusted my sister with the first part and my landlord with the drop off. Everything was handled perfectly and nothing was broken or missing. They even set up some of my things in the correct rooms. They even packaged up some of my delicate things. I lived in a 4^th floor walk up in Boston and a 3^rd floor at the location I moved to out of state and the movers did not complain at all and were very professional about this. I would 100% recommend them again.

I have used Pony Express many times and they are always fantastic, reliable, prompt, careful, hard working, tireless, terrific protective packers, knowledgeable and very pleasant. They help relieve the stress of moving. I recommend them highly.

Great service! We had 15 heavy HR file cabinets that needed to be moved to our new location and it was done by a two man crew. They were friendly and diligent. They even set the file cabinets just the way I wanted them… I didn’t get a chance to thank them before I left so Markus and Craig, thank you for all your hard work! #bestmoversthusfar! :)

Moving is the worst, but with the help of Pony Express it doesn’t have to be! The moved us from one 3^rd floor to another 3^rd floor (no elevator). They wrapped big furniture pieces carefully, dismantled larger items and reassembled in our new place. They were on time and even moved us faster than they had anticipated, costing us less money than their estimate. I recommend them to all my friends!

Josh responded to my emails promptly. Hired them for in-​house move because I was having floors refinished. Very professional, efficient, and hard working. I only needed them for one hour on both ends. Today they arrived right on time, and did not scratch my newly restored floors. Reasonable prices. Would hire them again.

SEVEN HOURS LATE. Amatuer hour the whole time!
We booked Pony Express months in advance. My husband and I used them for a move a few years ago and decided to try them again. We had an appointment at 8 am. I was so happy to be the first job of the day. We arranged for a three-​person team, as almost everything we were moving was quite large. We were lucky enough to be a short drive from the new place and took all of the small boxes in advance. All we had left was the dining room table, two dressers, a bed, desk, two couches, etc.
The night before the move, they tell us they will be two hours late. The next day, we hadn’t heard from them by 10 am, their new «arrival» time. We had to call Pony Express, who told us they would be there by midday. Noon arrives and we call again. No answer. I leave a voicemail. The owner tells us he will give us the two-​person rate, saving us $ 36 an hour. That’s nice of him, but I would rather get my movers, thank you very much.
SEVEN HOURS after they were scheduled to arrive, two (not three!) very exhausted men show up. They are clearly losing steam. An hour later, a third man arrives. It is his first day, and he is there to observe. I asked him if he could wrap up the small tv (rather than standing in the corner), and he told me he didn’t know how. He left after two hours, taking the screws to our desk with him.
Pony Express also couldn’t get our couches up the stairs. This isn’t the fault of the movers at all. If they don’t fit through the window, they don’t fit. But here’s the thing: if they had arrived on time, we would have discovered this fact hours earlier, and would have had ample time to make arrangements for our couches. Instead, they discovered it at 9 pm on a Friday, when the company who can disassemble them was closed for the weekend.
In conclusion: showed up with fewer movers than promised, showed up seven hours late, and destroyed a desk. They took a stressful move and made it worse. I would not use again, and would stop someone I love from giving Pony Express their hard-​earned money!
UPDATE TO JOSH’S RESPONSE BELOW:
1) They did not keep us informed «every step of the way.» They didn’t answer the phone when we called, and only returned our calls when we left voicemails. That is not keeping us informed!
2) Yes, they fixed the desk, but they broke it first so…
3) Do not blame us for moving during the busy season.
4) My husband was NOT understanding. He is even angrier than I am. He was afraid if he expressed this during the move, Pony Express would retaliate by not showing up at all. He had less faith in the company than I did.
5) The owner of the company emailed me, then called and emailed my husband, trying to get me to take down the review. Here is why I didn’t: they never apologized. They never took responsibility for screwing up royally. As I said above, they took an already stressful situation and made it so much worse. It was a nightmare to work with Pony Express. Did he think he was going to get a 5 star review after showing up 7 hours late?
The funny thing is, if Josh hadn’t blamed us for moving in the busy season (in his emails) and hadn’t tried to act like our move was professionally executed, I may have taken it down. But he didn’t, so up it will stay.

As a customer service/​sales professional I can tell you that everyone’s experience will always vary, as you can tell by previous reviews there are people who had really sh*tty experiences and people who had great experiences. I was one who had a great experience with Pony Express Movers even after throwing them a huge curveball (explained later).
I was making a small move about fifteen minutes away from where I was living in Jamaica Plain to the South End. I personally do not own too much furniture-​wise but have a lot of other ancillary stuff. In essence I was moving a bunch of boxes and a small bedroom set consisting of a mattress, simple bed frame, and a dresser from IKEA. Due to complications with the property management company my move was delayed from the middle of the month to the end of the month and I needed movers in a pinch. I was able to make contact with the owner Josh who was able to accommodate my move within a few days notice and with my work schedule. The whole time Josh advised me of the pricing and also that there was a 2 hour minimum charge for using their services, which is reasonable in my eyes.
I was slated to have the guys start at noon, but Ramon called me an hour before they were scheduled to show up to let me know that their previous job was running a little bit over and they were going to be a little late — which was fine with me because I left late from work and wasn’t going to meet them in time. When they showed up they came upstairs and checked everything out and had everything loaded probably within 30 minutes from a second floor house in Jamaica Plain.
They met me at my new place in the South End which unfortunately is on the sixth floor without an elevator. I felt bad for Ramon and Billy because there was no elevator and rather than watch them move everything up since some of the boxes were heavy Billy and Ramon helped organize the three of us into an assembly line style of getting everything loaded. Yes, I assisted people I hired to move because I wasn’t brought up to be THAT insensitive. After everything was brought into the unit is when I hit them with a curveball — the previous tenants had left a bunch of furniture in the unit which myself and roommates didn’t want to take down ourselves since they were heavy and awkward pieces. I asked Billy and Ramon if they minded taking care of it and without even blinking or hesitating they said no problem. All together the job took about an hour and a half and both Ramon and Billy were helpful and extremely efficient. Can’t ask for better service than what was received!

Moving sucks. It sucks a lot less with Pony Express. These guys are great — efficient, professional, and friendly. I liked that we could work out the entire arrangement via email.
I was moving not very many things to not very far away on a not notoriously busy moving day, but that said my experience was delightful and I’d highly recommend giving them a shot.

EDIT: I’d like to point out that they have gotten in touch with me multiple times and offered to fix the furniture. While I’m planning on getting some new furniture, this is awesome. Changed my review to 5 stars.
Fracking amazing, sort of. Got a coupon for these guys through Amazon and since we had to move in the middle of April, decided to use it. The guys who came were excellently professional, all the details were safely relayed to me, and they were extremely communicative. My only gripe? Three pieces of our furniture are now nearly broken, likely due to handling by the movers. But shit happens. And they were for the most part, impressive.

I REALLY am not one to write a negative review as I think businesses, like people, have good days and bad. However, I truly feel a duty to warn in this situation. I just do not want others to have to go through what I went through. Here is my sad saga with Pony Express. I found a new place this summer and I decided I would not put my poor parents and friends through another move so I decided to get movers. My friend told me about an Amazon Local deal where you could get two movers for two hours for $ 120 so I buy it.
About a month before the move I send them an email and a message through their website. I mention I have the Amazon Local deal. I hear nothing. A week goes by and I call them. Nobody answers and the voicemail box is full. OK, now I’m starting to get a bit nervous. The next day I send another email and call them when again no one pics up but at least I can leave a voicemail. Again nothing. ANOTHER week goes by and still I have not received a response to my emails, voicemails or website messages. I call early one day and finally a guy named Charles answers. He says he doesn’t have availability for the Saturday I asked for but does have availability for the next day so I take it. During this conversation I ask f he had gotten any of my emails, voicemails or messages and he says no. This REALLY baffles me, especially since at this point I have double, triple and quadruple-​checked the email address. Anyway, he says that he can do Sunday and that he’ll email me a list of questions.
I receive that email soon after we talk and I think finally we are getting somewhere! I quickly send a response to his email. I then panic thinking if they hadn’t gotten my other emails that I sent to this SAME EXACT email address than why would they have gotten this one? So I call again to get a confirmation and, once again no one picks up so I leave a message. The next day I call again and Charles answers and says that, to my relief, he DID get my responses and would give me a confirmation email in 30 minutes. Finally, I exhale. Until I check my email in a half an hour, an hour, later that day and there is STILL nothing. Now at this point, I have checked all of my Spam folders and everything and there is nothing there. I’m starting to feel like I’m in the twilight zone.
The next day rolls around and still nothing so I call again. I speak to someone in the office who tells me they responded to my email. I check again and nothing. I ask him to resend and he says that he will. Again, you guessed it! Nothing. I call and no one picks up. Then it’s 4^th of July weekend, and the office is, understandably, closed. All I want is a confirmation. The next Monday (less than 5 days before my move) I finally get an email from Charles who maybe is giving me a confirmation?!? NO. He says he can’t find my email with the responses to his questions! This is the same email, mind you, he TOLD ME he had received the week before and would give me a response to in a half an hour. I take a deep breath and resend my responses. I then get an email saying that actually they DO have availability for Saturday, I am confused but also happy as this is the day I and originally wanted.
I write back right away and sayI thought Saturday didn’t work but that I would take it if it did. I get a response from someone named Nicole who says, «Kosta must have misread the schedule» and actually they do NOT have availability the Saturday and can only do Sunday. At this point I am really ready to throw in the towel with them but I also felt I really needed them as the move was getting so close.
Then comes the doozy… later that afternoon I get an email saying that because my move is on a Sunday I will only get an hour and fifteen minutes instead of the specified 2 hours with my deal. I am livid. I immediately go back read the fine print to see if it says anything about Sundays being extra. Nope. I even have my attorney friend check it out and he sees nothing indicating I shouldn’t get the full 2 hours and 2 movers I paid for. I write them back telling them this and call and leave messages and hear nothing again for days.
Finally it’s the Thursday before my (Sunday) move and I am fed up so I call Amazon Local to see about getting a refund. I spoke to a very sweet lady who was horrified by my experience and offered me a full refund so I took it. The next day, on Friday (TWO DAYS) before my move, I finally get an email back from PE saying that, they would indeed be charging me extra for the Sunday move. I laugh and wrote them back saying how incredibly disappointed I was in my experience and how I got a full refund, and what do you know, I never got a response then either. In the end, my wonderful family and friends (once again) helped me move and I got to my new place just fine (thanks UHaul!) But I just had to write this review as I have never had as terrible, as disappointing, or as crazy-​making of a customer experience as the one I had with Pony Express.

I bought a coupon at Unilocal so i decided to stick with this company for my moving services. i called them yesterday 3 times, no one picked up the phone. the fouth time, the phone was answered by a guy that he said he is new here and every general question i’ve asked, he said he doesn’t know. (i asked them: how much do you charge per hour, if you would consider that as a tricky or difficult quesiton to answer). okay, okay I got it, you’re new so you know nothing. Then he took my email address promising me to let me know the information by email, but after a whole day, I heard nothing from them.
i also submitted a online inquiry yesterday but still waiting to hear back from them.
I tried calling them this morning around 11, right before this review, haha, guess what. still no one answering the call. I’m really dissapointed and does anyone know how to refund a coupon?

Finally I heard from someone in the company, after nearly 15days.
Josh sent me a message and apologized for the poor service while offering me a future discount to make up for this. Apology accepted but too late I already refunded the coupon and decided to move on my own.
I raised my review from 2 stars to 3 because of the fairly long and sincere sorry letter. But still, no clients should be receiving such poor service. I hope you could be more discreet with hiring new staffs next time and give them more customer service training.

I cannot express enough how miserable our experience with Pony Express has been, and they still have many of our belongings with no idea when they will be delivered.
1. The movers who came to move us from DC to NYC were incredibly nice. However, they only brought two guys. A one bedroom place took four hours to load onto the truck.
2. Once in NYC (it took them 8 hours to show up). They immediately side swiped a car while parking.
3. They unpacked for four hours. Then a NYFD guy came by and said they were not allowed to have a truck that size in our neighborhood and forced them to leave. The guys said they would try and be back the next day.
4. They called the next day and said they could not and would be back on Monday. Once Monday rolled around I called and they told me they were not coming, and would be there on Thursday.
5. I have repeatedly asked to speak with Josh (the owner) both by leaving voicemails and telling two staff to have him call me. He has chosen not to response. That shows what he thinks of his clients.
6. It is now 3:30 on Thursday afternoon (the supposed delivery date) and we have not heard from them. I have called 5 – 6 times today and no one is answering.
Pony has been one of the most unprofessional companies I have ever dealt with. Now our belongings are being held hostage with no way to figure out what happened. I could not be more disappointed with them. I’ve never experienced a moving company with this low regard for its customers in my life.
UPDATE: Within 24 hours of writing this post, I heard from Josh (the owner). The conversation started off with him telling me the plan had always been for our stuff to be delivered on Friday. When I explained two different employees had told me both Monday and Thursday delivery dates, he said that was never the plan. Well how would I know that? Then after I explained that the truck they brought to our neighborhood was too large based on city regulations, the response was «well that was the truck they had.» No admission it was their responsibility to know the rules of the cities they work in. The first apology I received was about 6 – 7 minutes into the conversation. Eventually I was able to get him to tell me their policy of returning some money depending on the total number of days late.
The guys finally came Friday and were great (all movers have been really wonderful through this process). As we were unpacking we thought two boxes were missing. I called both the driver and the Pony Express main line to explain we believed there were missing boxes. As of this writing, I have yet to hear from them (this was four days ago). Luckily we found the boxes, but they never called back to figure out if anything was missing.

Generally, our experience with Pony Express was very good. We used them to move from Southern New Hampshire to Harrisburg, PA on June 16 – 17. Before our move, Josh came to our condo to access whether our stuff would fit in one truck. Having never used a professional moving company before, it was a huge peace of mind to get a professional opinion on what kind of help and capacity we would need with our move. Pony Express also gave us a competitive, all-​included quote compared to other movers in the Boston area (but more on the money aspect later).
On the day of the move, the moving team came late due to the need to unload some stuff in our truck into a storage unit, but the company phoned us multiple times to let us know, and our circumstances were such that it was not an inconvenience for them to come later. They also sent a bigger crew to load us than planned, which got us back some time. Then Steve and Eric drove our stuff to PA and unloaded the next day. They were friendly and professional throughout, and did a great job very quickly with the unload, considering that it was an 85 degree day and the AC in our new place wasn’t working.
The only reason this wasn’t a five star review is that when Steve gave us our invoice after unload was completed, it was considerably more than we were quoted without any explanation. I felt weird about arguing with him after he had just busted his butt hauling our stuff, and wanted to check that the mistake wasn’t on our part. I confirmed that we had been over-​charged and called Josh, who was our original point of contact who gave us the quote. He agreed that there was a mistake and refunded us the overage quickly. So all-​in-​all, I would recommend them highly — just make sure you compare your invoice and quote!

I used Pony Express to move from Boston to Florida and they were fantastic. In 4 days all my belongings were in my new Apartment delivered flawlessly. The pickup crew was extremely professional as well as the delivery crew. Highly recommend them for your next moving project. There is a reason these guys are 5 stars on Unilocal.
They called and let me know how things were until they showed up for the delivery. They weren’t the cheapest but based on the reviews on Unilocal I decided to hire them. Keep up the good work Josh & Crew. Hopefully I can use you guys again in the near future.

If I could give Pony Express 10 stars, I would. I was moving yesterday (June 1), probably one of the busiest moving days of the year in Boston and my movers were supposed to come between 10 – 11 but had a longer window in our contract from 7 – 12. I checked in with them all morning and around 11:30 they told me that they would be at least another 3 hours at their morning job. The girl moving into my apartment was showing up with Pony Express at 1pm with all of her belongings, so I was in a tough position.
Pony Express saved the day! They came and moved all of my boxes, couch, dressers, and reassembled everything at my new apartment and then continued with the scheduled move for the new tenant. They handled my belongings with care while also moving quickly to get both jobs done in an impressive amount of time. The team was personable, funny, accomodating and trustworthy. They could have easily charged me whatever they wanted because of the position that I was in, but they treated it as if I had scheduled the move months ago and proceeded with the standard hourly rate and insurance. I will never do another move without the help of Pony Express.

I’d been a staunch DIY mover since I’ve owned more than a backpack full of stuff, but these guys made me see the error of my ways. Professional movers are SO worth it, and these guys especially so. We were only moving a short distance, but it was the throes of Snowpocalypse 2015, so parking/​loading/​unloading had to be a one-​shot deal.
These guys called ahead to let me know they were on their way and showed up right on time. They also had a marked truck and the company logo on their shirts. A minor thing, but it is comforting when you’re about to let a bunch of strangers into your house and trust them not to abscond with all your stuff.
The crew was very considerate of the fact we were paying hourly; they did not slow down once, and were up-​front about things that weren’t an efficient use of time (like trying to get a waaay-​too-​big box spring up a staircase). As you’d expect, they took very good care of my furniture, but they were also very careful of the wood floors and our escape artist dog.
A tip? If you have a wretched parking situation, get a street occupancy permit. It helps the brave soul driving a moving truck through the streets of Boston, and it will save you some time (read: money) if the crew can park/​load up right in front of your house.
